McCartney completes set of medals at European U23 championships
ELLIE MCCARTNEY HAS won a silver medal in the 200m Breaststroke at the European U23 Championships to go with the gold and bronze she won earlier in Slovakia.
McCartney completed the set in a time of 2:24.02 to compliment her gold in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze in the 100m Breaststroke.
The National Centre Limerick swimmer was third after 100m behind Denmark's Clara Rybek-Anderson and Lithuania's Kotryna Teterekova, before mounting her come back, out splitting both swimmers ahead of her in the second 100 metres. But it wasn't enough time to catch 2024 European silver medallist in the event Rybek-Anderson, who got the touch ahead of McCartney in 2:23.89. Teterekova took third in 2:24.86.

'I'm happy with how the past few days have panned out, in the general scale of things this is only one step forward to the World Championships in Singapore,' McCartney said after the race.
'Its bittersweet being so close to getting gold again, but to get a pb, I know I put my best foot forward and my best performance out there, and to walk away a European U23 Champion is more than I could have dreamed of. I've achieved my goals that I wanted to while I was here and anything else was a bonus, so I'm walking away with my head held high.'
Meanwhile at the Sette Colli International in Rome, Ellen Walshe doubled up with a silver and bronze medal on the last night of racing. After winning gold in the 400m Individual Medley on Friday, the Templeogue swimmer added silver in the 200m Butterfly in 2:09.59 and bronze in the 200m Individual Medley in 2:11.80 to her haul.
McSharry won a second silver medal as she clocked 2:25.05 to take second in the final of the 200m Breaststroke. She won her first silver medal in the 100m Breaststroke on Thursday.
Next up for Irish swimmers is the European Junior Championships, taking place in Samorin, Slovakia, which is the same venue as the European U23 Championships.
The competition will run from Tuesday 1 July to Sunday 6 July, with sixteen Irish swimmers selected.
The team include 2024 European Junior Champion in the 200m Backstroke and Silver medallist in the 100m Backstroke, John Shortt, and bronze medallist in the 100m Freestyle from the last edition Paris 2024 Olympian, Grace Davison. Shortt is also qualified for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

HENRY POLLOCK MIGHT have hogged the limelight in the British and Irish Lions Australian tour opener, but coach Andy Farrell was equally impressed with Ireland pair Joe McCarthy and Mack Hansen, who both staked claims for a Test spot. 'He's developing his all-round game and he'll only grow from here on in.' 'I mean there were some fantastic tries, but the play of the day by a country mile was Mack Hansen,' he said. 'Back and forward, full length of the field, fighting for his team on his own, that's what a Lion should 100% do for his team.' While noting some flashes of individual brilliance in the first game of their nine-match tour, Farrell also pinpointed teething problems to fix before their next match against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Wednesday. He highlighted ill-discipline, with six penalties conceded in the first-half before they got in their groove after the break. 'Happy with the scoreline and happy with how we actually got to that point because it wasn't all going our own way,' said Farrell. 'We gathered ourselves well and sorted a few things out on the run and played some nice rugby in the end. 'We had more composure (in the second-half), we were less desperate,' he added. Enzo Maresca: Chelsea's two-hour hold-up against Benfica at Club World Cup a 'joke'
Enzo Maresca labelled the decision to suspend Chelsea's Club World Cup last-16 tie with Benfica for two hours "a joke" even as his side eventually ran out 4-1 winners in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tie took almost five hours to complete after the teams were forced inside, with the Blues 1-0 up with four minutes remaining thanks to Reece James' free-kick, due to "the risk of lightning in the vicinity of Bank of America Stadium". On the resumption, Angel Di Maria equalised with a controversial stoppage-time penalty to take the game to extra time, only for Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to seal Chelsea's win. Maresca, in his press conference, said of the long delay: "I think it's a joke, to be honest. "It's not football, it's completely something new, I struggle to understand. "I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition. "It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero. "We've been here two weeks and they've already suspended six or seven games, there is some problems for me personally. "I'm talking as a manager because when you're two hours inside and you have to try to keep them (the players) in the game, they're speaking to their families outside for safety reasons, they're eating, they're playing, they're laughing, how can you keep them inside focused for two hours? It's a joke." One of Maresca's players at least was able to make light of the delay, which saw the game finish at 1.40am Irish time time, with defender Trevoh Chalobah posting on social media: "Game started Saturday and ended Sunday". Players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break and Maresca told broadcaster DAZN: "Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult. "But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy." Gianluca Prestianni saw red for Bruno Lage's men in extra time for a second yellow card as Chelsea booked their place against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals. The Blues could now come up against Palmeiras' Stamford Bridge-bound Estevao Willian, whose side defeated fellow Brazilian club Botafogo on Saturday.
