North Kansas City also received a Top Hospital-Gold Standard designation in obstetrics and gynecology-C-section and Gastroenterology and bariatrics-colon surgery.

Only 10 hospitals in each state can earn Gold Standard recognition for a procedure.
Castle Connonlly recognizes over 1,400 hospitals for their excellence in performing specific medical procedures.
Four Kansas City-area students participate in National Spelling Bee
Each area of recognition is selected for analysis based on patient volume, level of specialization and the comparison of outcomes across health system.
Hospitals are evaluated on performance measures such as mortality and complication rates, patient safety, failure-to-rescue rates and physician expertise.

Local organizations step up for fallen Wyandotte Co. deputy's family
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Not even 24 hours after Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Elijah Ming was killed in the line of duty, organizations in the Kansas City metro area are already stepping up to help the family and the sheriff's office. 'Nobody's prepared for it and they definitely don't know what they need,' said Ronnie Doumitt, President of Answering the Call. Their organization offers resources and support for first responders and their families in times of crises, and plans to offer the same to Ming's family. Who was Elijah Ming? Doumitt is a former detective and knows what it's like to ride in a funeral procession. 'I'm telling you, I've been in those cars and I've shed tears in those police cars just for the outpouring of support,' he said. 'And that's why they go back out and that's why they don the uniform and they're jumping back in service and they're out on calls right now.' Doumitt didn't know Ming personally, but says that all law enforcement is family. 'Very, very few people are designed to go out and serve and protect communities that they just don't know, complete strangers,' said Doumitt. 'He gave his life for her and that's why we love them so much. And we're so grateful for his service to our community.' As the family grieves the loss of their loved one, Doumitt says that the deputies who served alongside Ming will still be answering the community's call for help. 'Wyandotte County right now? All those deputies aren't home grieving. They're out there working. They're still answering the calls. They're answering the exact same kind of call that Deputy Ming answered yesterday.' Vigil held for fallen Wyandotte deputy Elijah Ming
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sunday evening, community members, friends and fellow law enforcement officers gathered outside the Wyandotte County Courthouse for a prayer vigil in honor of fallen deputy Elijah Ming. Deputy Ming was killed in the line of duty on Saturday. He was 34 years old. Who was Elijah Ming? Tributes roll in for Wyandotte County deputy shot, killed in KCK Ming served with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office for nine years. 'Every time you saw him, he had a smile on his face. He was just uplifting, kept people happy. He was a great guy to be around,' said Ming's godbrother Jaron White. Those closest to Deputy Ming say he had a positive impact on the people around him and truly cared about others. He was a father, husband, mentor and friend to many. 'It's very painful to come to the realization that our friend, our brother, a beloved husband, a devoted husband, a loving father, a caring community leader and servant, is no longer a part of our community. It is a pain that will stay with us,' said pastor LaRon Thompson, who was friends with Ming. On Sunday, dozens of people gathered outside the Wyandotte County Courthouse to remember and honor Deputy Ming and his service. They also took time to say a prayer for his family as they navigate this tragedy. 'A servant leader is who he was and who he embodied beyond the 9-to-5, beyond the sheriff shift. He was a community leader, he was engaged, he gave back. He was a devoted husband and loving father, and his job didn't just stop when his shift ended; it's something that he carried after his shift,' Thompson explained. Family Dollar reportedly 'tilting' two days before deadly collapse in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A newly obtained report on Monday shows that just days before the roof of a Family Dollar in Kansas City partially collapsed, killing one person and injuring three others, a resident reported safety and structural concerns to the city. According to city records, a report was filed on Friday after a resident thought they saw the building 'tilting.' The report claims that the resident alerted the city and filed a property violation. Vigil held for fallen Wyandotte deputy Elijah Ming However, on Sunday at about 2:45 p.m., first responders throughout Kansas City were called to a Family Dollar near 37th and Broadway Boulevard after hearing reports that the building had partially collapsed, landing on customers in and around the store. A 68-year-old man was killed when the front facade of the structure fell, and three others were injured, including a 50-year-old woman who was taken to a hospital. Since then, it has been reported that all three victims are expected to survive. Although law enforcement is still investigating the cause of the structure collapse, many residents and public officials are looking for answers. Kansas City Councilman Crispin Rea, who lives nearby, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to prevent future incidents. 'Ultimately, the responsibility for securing your building falls on the property owner,' Rea said. 'However, and this is an important however, the city plays a role for an important reason. That role is to make ourselves aware of dangerous buildings, to inspect them, and make determinations on next steps that need to happen, and hold property owners accountable. While that responsibility falls on the property owner, we have an important role to play, and that's something we need to look at moving forward.' Who was Elijah Ming? It read, 'We are deeply saddened by the tragedy at the leased Family Dollar store on Broadway Boulevard in Kansas City. Our hearts and thoughts are with those impacted.' Family Dollar continued, 'We are conducting wellness checks with our employees and offering them resources and assistance. The Company is conducting an investigation into this matter.' Although Family Dollar is conducting its own investigation, Kansas City police have blocked off part of the surrounding area to continue their investigations and determine what caused the building's collapse.
