John Brogden claims the top spot and the Fred Moss Memorial Trophy
First and more locally, a celebration took place on Saturday for one of the Liverpool & District AA's angling greats and a past chairman with that, Fred Moss.
For this one match secretary Mike Dickson once again put together another superb open match in which many anglers who knew Fred personally, travelled far and wide to Maghull for the draw held at the MCA.
With canal in fine form, particularly upon the noted areas of late, Wirral's Alan Dewhurst's emphatic win on Wednesday with a great catch of bream and skimmers for 36.8.0, alerted not only our visitors, but the many local Liverpool rods participating who were all sure to be looking to sit on a few fish in order to hopefully enjoy a great day's fishing like Dewhurst had experienced midweek.
This one, which was pegged out through Maghull, was a match in which many regulars looked for a favoured draw on some historically good areas in which bream inhabit and there was no doubt at all that one or two of the field would be relishing a chance of a decent draw on the day.

Taking advantage of just that was Matrix Leigh Tackle & Bait rod John Brogden, and here landing himself on a noted peg on Maghull's cricket pitch area, Brogden made the most of it with no mistakes on taking the best weight of the day for 13.10.0 and of course the Fred Moss Memorial Trophy.
Next, taking a ride out along the East Lancashire Road to Carr Mill at St Helens on Monday, this was another match that saw many anglers taking part visiting from all over the region, including yours truly, all to also share their thoughts of another past member who was also very fondly respected, Dez Lowcock.
As many will recognise, this huge natural expanse of water looking out to Billinge is a terrific venue.
It's full of many species of fish including double figure carp and huge bream shoals along with roach, perch and the odd tench that are rare but present.
So with nearly 50 anglers present to honour Dezzy on this one, this match was spread across the venue with many options open for everyone with regards to a personal approach.
One man who doesn't need any confidence on Carr Mill is Local St Helens rod Peter Tickle. A winner on many occasions within his angling career, Tickle's knowledge on the dam is second to none particularly when looking at the present form as a guide.
In this one Tickle drew a very much favoured area and with a presence of mind on his approach, he made no bones about how he was going to tackle it.
Opting for a long pole approach at 15 metres and a 'back-up' of using an open ended feeder on the tip, Tickle took bream, skimmers and an unexpected 3lb tench for an overall winning weight of 17.4.0 to pick up the now coveted Dez Lowcock Memorial Shield.
In second place was Steve Mitchell, who, pegged nearby on peg 8, took skimmers for 11.8.0 which closely outdid Royton's Jim Evans's 11lb third place effort.
Manchester's Mark Harris and Skelmersdale's Steve Wooding took 8lb for joint fourth position.

Liverpool 'to make formal offer' for Alexander Isak this week as £65.5m Luis Diaz transfer is agreed
Liverpool have agreed a deal that is expected to help fund a bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Reds have already bolstered their attack with the signing of Hugo Ekitike but remain interested in bringing Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, to the club this summer. Despite approaching Newcastle over signing of the Sweden international for around £120million, the reigning champions of England were quickly told that the striker was not for sale. However, the transfer saga took a stunning twist last week when Isak asked to leave Newcastle and was subsequently left out of the squad that travelled to Asia for the pre-season tour. Now, the Magpies are bracing themselves for a formal offer from Liverpool for Isak this week. According to reports, the Merseyside giants have been given the green light to launch a bid for the striker as Luis Diaz's exit is imminent. Liverpool have agreed to sell the Colombia international to Bayern Munich for a fee said to be in the region of £65.5m. The money from the sale is expected to fund a bid for Isak. While the message from the Newcastle hierarchy has been they want to keep their best players, if Liverpool's offer approaches £150m mark and Isak pushes to leave St James' Park then that stance could soften. Regardless of the outcome, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is well aware his side must strengthen after missing out on a number of key targets - including Ekitike. Speaking after the pre-season defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, he said: 'We're not deluded. We know we need to bring players in. 'We've known that for a long time. We did a lot of work (at the end of last season), we knew what we wanted. 'But it's been a challenging transfer window. Let's see what we can do.'

Liverpool's next signing is starting to unveil and it's not Alexander Isak. Of course the Swede is still a priority target for the Reds. But his saga could drag on for a while. This doesn't mean that Liverpool won't sign him, merely that given it's a deal of huge magnitude, it's going to take a long time to iron out the details. With Joe Gomez travelling back home from pre-season due to an injury, it has exposed a great need at centre-back for the Reds. Liverpool have already lost Jarell Quansah this summer, and they now have just two senior centre-back on tour in pre-season in Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. This has seen Slot play Luca Stephenson, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas at centre-back. It's becoming very apparent after the four goals conceded against AC Milan that this situation is not tenable going into the season. Liverpool need more depth in the centre-back positions, especially considering Konate and Gomez are both injury prone. This is therefore the obvious next transfer Hughes is going to sort out. And while the first name everyone will gravitate to is Marc Guehi, he might not be the clear choice. In fact, Liverpool may already be targeting someone else in the position, who could be an even better fit.

With his departure there have been a lot of calls for Liverpool to sign a replacement for the Colombian. He's a number nine and this is an area where Liverpool are short of options. In contrast on the wings, Liverpool may already have enough ammunition - even if Federico Chiesa is set to depart as well. Arne Slot has Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and the brilliant Rio Ngumoha to choose from. Although they are not the only options. New signings, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz can also play on the wings. And the Reds have also signed a winger, who not many people have noticed is actually a winger. At least that is where new signing Jeremie Frimpong has played for the most of pre-season. He came on and played as a right-winger against Preston and did the same against AC Milan as well. Frimpong's speed and the fact that he played really advanced in Bayer Leverkusen's system means he's very well suited to play that forward role. Against Milan, he showcased his qualities, too. His speedy runs caused a lot of problems to AC Milan's defence and it went under the radar a little bit, just how good Frimpong was in that game. The Liverpool man won the most duels (7) in the match and his constant threat could have easily resulted in the game being more even.
