Now, face-to-trunk with the most maudlin tree I've ever met, I realize I've taken my hometown's fragile flora for granted. On the heels of our driest season on record, the gadflies about town are buzzing not about the traffic, but about the pests, diseases, and climate concerns threatening the trees.
A cadre of local arborists, eco-artists, and tribal leaders are protecting the primeval superstars that made the Hamptons the Hamptons in the first place. So, this summer, take the road less traveled and visit these less-touristed herbaceous haunts in support of its (hopefully) flourishing arbol future.
Shinnecock Nation
On any given summer day, 38,000 commuter cars inch across the Shinnecock Canal, and past the oldest Hamptonite: a 300-year-old beech that has miraculously resisted rampant Beech Leaf Disease. Due to the Shinnecock Nation's advocacy, the now-designated heritage tree's colossal presence is protected for future generations.
'All Shinnecock have our own unique relationship with the trees,' says Rebekah Phoenix Wise, the Shinnecock Nation's communications manager. 'We're foragers, scientists, and land-use attorneys—but above all, we're stewards of nature.' She recommends keeping 'an eye on the Nation's Instagram to hear about impromptu nature and foraging walks offered by community naturalists.' Next time you go through a TSA security checkpoint at the airport, be careful: there's one item you should make sure to not put directly into the bin. Cell phones are at risk of being stolen directly out of TSA security bins if they are left loose. Instead it's recommended that you tuck it away inside one of your bags, preferably in a sealable pocket. This can also apply to other valuables or electronics you might be traveling with through security. Tiffany, a travel expert who posts TikToks under the name from Pittsburgh to more than 24,000 followers, says in a video she shared that one thing she will never do is place her phone in the bin directly. She told a story about a time she did leave her phone out loose, and she was chastised by the TSA agent on duty. 'I did this once and the TSA agent looked at me and said, you don't like your phone?' Tiffany shares. 'He said, this is the fastest way to get it stolen.' She continues, 'Lines can back up and somebody can just swipe it and you're not paying attention until you realize it's too late.' It's wise to make sure your phone and other electronics are tucked safely away, unless the TSA agent specifically asks you to remove the item from your bag. If you do lose your phone or any other important item as you go through security, all hope is not lost. According to the TSA website, nearly 100,000 lost items are recovered every year. 'Passengers are encouraged to place their contact information on the outside of their electronics, such as laptops, in case the item is left behind. TSA will make every effort to reunite passengers with their belongings,' the TSA website states. 'Unclaimed electronics will have its memory removed and destroyed (e.g. laptop hard drive) or be destroyed completely (e.g. items with non-removable memory) to protect personal data after the 30-day holding period.' So follow Tiffany's advice to keep your phone safe. 'I am not putting my phone directly into one of the containers," she said, "It's always going in a zipped pocket in my bag."

This Couple Booked a Hotel Stay Worth More Than $10,000 All On Points—Here's How They Did It
David Tibbitts, 33, and Eric Naumann, 35, consider Big Sur to be one of their favorite places in the world. Therefore, it's no surprise that this rugged stretch of California's central coast was the setting for the couple's long-awaited proposal. The San Francisco-based couple, who have been dating since 2015, did something unconventional. While they legally became husbands during the height of the pandemic, Tibbitts and Naumann had skipped all of the traditional norms—like a cute engagement, an actual wedding ceremony, and a honeymoon. 'We purposefully decided to keep our union unromantic for the time being, file the paperwork in time for tax season, and save the romance for a later date when we could enjoy it properly,' Tibbitts said. 'As an executive assistant at the time, I was familiar with working with hotels for anything one of my executives might need during their stay, but it was exciting to do it for myself for a change,' Naumann said. The plan was to go on a hike, and the property kindly supported the couple in this endeavor: Staff supplied him with a bottle of champagne, recommendations for a hike, and the world's heaviest takeout container full of 'enough charcuterie for a small army,' as Naumann put it. 'That was our first full day at the hotel, so we had a ton of fun basking in the engagement glow for the remainder of the trip.' That meant ample time to relax in the on-site Japanese baths, share their hopes and dreams for a future wedding, and get used to the feeling of rings around their fingers. 'Our favorite part of the resort is probably the walking path to the restaurant,' Tibbitts said. 'You get to experience the beautiful forest to and from each meal at the Sur House, and it's the perfect time to decompress as you appreciate the beauty of Big Sur.' According to Neumann, you might see availability appear in the days or weeks before the cancellation window closes, as was the case for the couple's stay. Another perk of loyalty programs like Hyatt's is that, once you're in them, you are more likely to receive upgrades like the one Neumann received if there is availability on the property.
