Borussia Dortmund are well-placed to reach the Club World Cup knock-outs but coach Niko Kovac has urged an improved performance when they face South Korea's Ulsan HD in their final group match on Wednesday.
Dortmund are tied with Brazilian leaders Fluminense atop Group F on four points each, and need a point against eliminated bottom side Ulsan in Cincinnati to be assured of advancing.

They were lucky to draw 0-0 with Fluminense in their opener and then flirted with disaster against South African side Mamelodi Sundowns when they won 4-3 after leading 4-1.
"I expected more. We played too slow and not precisely enough," Kovac said.
Dortmund's defence, which helped them to a strong finish for fourth place in the Bundesliga, has been shaky at the Club World Cup but defender Waldemar Anton pledged that "we now know what is at stake."
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: "We have discussed this very thoroughly and also pointed out how we need to do things better."

Overall, Kehl is upbeat that they will take the next step and reach the last 16 where they will face Inter Milan, River Plate of Buenos Aires or Mexican side Monterrey.
"We are in a very good position with four points and have every opportunity to advance on Wednesday, and I am absolutely convinced of it," Kehl said.
Whether Dortmund finish top or second in the group doesn't make a difference to Kehl because their last 16 opponent will only be determined later Wednesday.
"We want to take three points. That gives a bit more confidence and a little more money," he said, referring to the €40 million ($46 million) in prize money the club would be assured of.

Inter Miami awaiting word if Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba will be suspended for missing 2025 MLS All-Star Game

MLS has yet to officially announce whether Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba will be available for Inter Miami's match Saturday night when they host FC Cincinnati. The two could be subject to a one-game suspension after they missed the 2025 MLS All-Star Game this week. While Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters the team had not heard from the league and are training as if Messi and Alba will play, Soccerwise's Tom Bogert reports that MLS has not made an official decision on their status. MLS rules state that if a player pulls out of the All-Star Game without an approved medical reason they are subject to a one-game suspension. According to ESPN's Lizzy Becherano, league officials and Inter Miami representatives held talks this week about whether both players would be available for the Cincinnati game. "Well, Messi showed normal fatigue from the number of games and minutes he's been playing," Mascherano said, via ESPN. "Look, players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days. But luckily, he is returning today. Let's hope he can train alongside the group so we can count on both of them for tomorrow's game. We haven't received any [sanction.]" The league has enforced this policy before after former LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimović was suspended one game when he missed the 2018 All-Star Game against Serie A side Juventus. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] A team of MLS All-Stars beat a team of All-Stars from Mexico's Liga MX 3-1 in in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday night. When the league revealed the final roster for the game, Messi and Alba were not included. On Friday, Mascherano noted Inter Miami's busy schedule of late and why Messi and Alba needed the time away. "What I think is that if they want to do this type of event, it's great to do it, and the truth is that it's great for the league," Mascherano said. "There shouldn't be a date in the schedule. It's crazy. We've been playing four of the last five games away. We've been playing four away. We've been playing practically every three days. "Stop for the weekend, the All-Star Gam is played on the weekend, and we come back because after Wednesday, today, 48 hours after having played, there are teams that are going to play today, and it's not enough rest for the players either. So, the first thing we have to think about is that football belongs to the players. And if football belongs to the players, without players, it doesn't exist." Messi missed last year's All-Star Game after he suffered an ankle injury representing Argentina at Copa América. Speculation grew that the two Inter Miami stars would not play in this year's event when they both missed Monday's training session. Following an injury-filled 2024 season, the 38-year-old Messi has played every minute of Inter Miami's last 19 games. The Herons are 12-4-5 and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 21 games. Both players were in the Inter Miami lineup during Saturday's 5-1 win over New York Red Bulls. Alba, who was subbed out in the second half with an injury, scored the team's first goal and Messi added two in the second half. It remains to be how involved Messi and Alba will be involved against Cincinnati. Both trained on Friday morning and the team will then have three days off before beginning Phase One of Leagues Cup play on Wednesday against Liga MX side Atlas F.C.

Bonmatí-Powered Spain Seeks To Overwhelm England's Grit In Euros Final

For all Spain women's pedigree, it has never won a European Championship final. Any from the free-scoring constellation might have stepped up as Spain found itself locked in a goalless European Championship semifinal against Germany on Wednesday. Even so, deep into a major tournament, which requires incision alongside all the easy-on-the-eye soccer, it's hardly surprising that Ballon d'Or holder and Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí finally struck the winner. Indeed, the midfield orchestrator delivered the final flourish to another neat passage of play that has characterized Spain's offensive output in Switzerland. The squad has the most goals in the competition, 17, including 14 in the group stage, with Bonmatí the 10th to contribute. Spain is far from bullet-proof defensively, but this is a fun and typically rhythmic La Roja side to watch. All of which makes the world champion a largely anticipated finalist. Yet there's still great significance. Despite the explosion of Spanish women's soccer over the last decade or so, this will be its first Euros final. And it will face England—a repeat of the World Cup finale in 2023, when ex-federation president Luis Rubiales' actions after full time marred the achievement. Montse Tomé is the attentive personality spurring the current crop on from the sidelines. A former Barcelona player, she was previously trainer Jorge Vilda's right-hand woman and became the first female to take the head coach role back in 2023. Blessed with some of the best players on the planet, she's already won the Women's Nations League, but it will be interesting to see whether England can disrupt her selection from dictating the terms (which it has for most of the tournament) on Sunday. Both of the head coaches for the Euros final are women—Spain's Tomé (pictured) and England's ... More Wiegman. England Bring Plenty Of Fight England reaching the showpiece game was also a realistic expectation. It's the fifth straight occasion that Lionesses' head coach Sarina Wiegman—previously at the wheel of her native Netherlands—has dragged a side to the final of a tournament. Meanwhile, Spain and England, the latter reigning champion from Euro 2021, boast athletes with the highest market values in the tournament by some distance, according to Off The Pitch. Be that as it may, England's resolve has been the difference so far, needing to recover from a defeat against France at the beginning and from deficits to Sweden and Italy in the knockout rounds, both involving late goals. Epitomizing that, and helping England get over the line, is teenager Michelle Agyemang. She's gone from the outskirts at Arsenal, even a ball girl for Wiegman's England, to a warrior-esque scorer from the bench—all while tinkling the ivories on the piano she brought to Switzerland. Ahead of the final, full-back Lucy Bronze says, 'I don't think you'll find a team in world football with more fight and more resilience than this England team.' On the evidence to hand, who's to argue with her? Still, England will need to raise its game as well as maintain its stubbornness against Spain, which has the steel to match; Bonmatí was hospitalized with viral meningitis shortly before the competition started. In terms of complete play, Spain—equipped with dynamos such as Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas, and the brilliant Claùdia Pina—has the edge. Given the opponents' resilience and a chink of weakness in the backline, it will require that firepower, and more in reserve, to prosper in the showdown.

Hugo Ekitike: It's the perfect moment to join Liverpool

Hugo Ekitike says now is the 'perfect moment' in his career to join Liverpool following his £79 million (€91.5m) transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt. The striker has signed a six-year deal with the Reds, who will pay Eintracht an initial fee of £69m (€80m) plus £10m (€12.5m) in add-ons. Newcastle United were also interested in signing the French youth international, but Liverpool swooped in to hijack the transfer this week. He is their sixth arrival this summer. 'I feel very proud,' Ekitike told the club's official website in his first interview since completing the move to Anfield. 'Obviously it's a big, big club. I'm just excited, I'm a bit like a kid. I've been dreaming to come and play in the Premier League. And to play for Liverpool is a big, big good feeling for me. I just can't wait to start to play games and to win trophies.' Hugo Ekitike: It's the perfect moment to join Liverpool Ekitike has long been seen as one of the most exciting young prospects in European football, but he became one of the most in-demand forwards on the transfer market after last season. The 23-year-old scored 15 goals and provided eight assists as Eintracht finished third in the Bundesliga. He feels now was the right time to make the step up to the Premier League. 'I think that was the right moment,' Ekitike said. 'I came to the Bundesliga hungry, I wanted to show that I'm a good player and I can make the difference on the pitch. I think I did well last season. 'Now, I feel ready to make a bigger step and to play on the highest level, to improve myself, to see what I can do. That's why I think it's the right timing for me and the perfect moment to come here.' Ekitike joins Liverpool just two months after the club the Premier League title, and thinks the side have the quality to compete on all fronts this coming season. 'Yeah, obviously Liverpool are already on the top, but we have still things to reach. That's why we want to be the best and need to improve every season to go and reach the success. 'It's going to be a difficult season and a long season, but we have the quality to reach everything I think.' Watch – Read – Follow The Football Faithful on Social Media: | | | |
