Rahul Gandhi's photo on sanitary pads in Bihar: JD-U slams Congress for 'ideological bankruptcy'
The ruling Janata Dal (United) launched a tirade at the grand old party for politicizing issues sensitive to women and called it an example of its ideological bankruptcy.
The criticism was triggered by a photograph of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi featuring prominently on sanitary pad packets, being distributed under the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, aimed at raising menstrual hygiene awareness among women in Bihar.
The Congress launched the initiative as part of a larger campaign for women voters in the state. The party claimed that over 5 lakh sanitary pad boxes will be distributed, with an aim to address menstrual health, break social taboos, and also spread awareness across rural and urban areas alike.
However, JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar strongly criticised the Congress over the move.
"What has happened to the Congress Party?" he asked, calling the strategy a shallow electoral gimmick.
'Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been working continuously to empower the daughters and sisters of state, to empower them and to build a robust landscape for their overall development. The election year has come; daughters, women are a symbol of respect and honour, but you, in an arrogant display of power, put your face on it (sanitary pads),' he said, slamming the use of Rahul Gandhi's image on the sanitary pads.
Neeraj Kumar further said the Congress's alliance with a party like the RJD has led to such political missteps.
'It shows, in politics, what is called ideological bankruptcy or lack of intellect. Not understanding the situation, or, naturally, the outcomes of being with a party like RJD, which is known for its political misdeeds, the effect of that co-operation was seen.'
The sanitary pad distribution is part of the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, under which the Congress claims to be advocating for menstrual hygiene and awareness.
In addition, the party has unveiled the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, a flagship welfare scheme for the economic empowerment for women.
Under the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, the Congress promises to provide Rs 2,500 per month directly into the bank accounts of economically disadvantaged women, if the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) forms the government in Bihar.

Irregularities in solar pump project implemented by Anert, alleges Ramesh Chennithala
Thiruvananthapuram: Congress working committee (CWC) member Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday demanded a detailed investigation into the irregularities in the Rs 240-crore tender to make grid-connected agriculture pumps solar under PM-Kusum scheme. After releasing documents, including the sanction order from Union ministry, Chennithala said there was an increase of over Rs 100 crore in total project cost and a misappropriation of more than Rs 100 crore in obtaining a loan of Rs 175 crore from Nabard. Agency for new and renewable energy research and technology (Anert) was given the order by Union ministry of new and renewable energy in May 2022 to convert 9,348 agricultural pumps to solar. Meanwhile, electricity minister K Krishnankutty instructed additional chief secretary of energy department to investigate the allegations of irregularities and submit a report. He said no one responsible for any irregularities found in the investigation would be protected. Appropriate further actions will be taken after receiving the investigation report, he said. There were irregularities on many counts, Ramesh alleged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo "The Rs 240-crore tender was scrapped after technical and financial bids were opened, the lowest bidder was allowed to withdraw and there were irregularities in accepting the financial bid in the second tender. Work orders were given to companies that didn't mention amounts in bids, grading was not followed in converting solar pumps and pumps were set up at 146% more than the benchmark set by govt of India. State govt returned around 85% of the subsidy to Centre," he said. Chennithala said the irregularities began when Anert CEO, who is authorised to call tenders worth up to Rs 5 crore, invited a tender for Rs 240 crore. "It needs to be clarified how such a high-value tender was called without govt's written approval," he said. Irregularities occurred throughout the entire process, he alleged. "After a company submitted its tender, they were given the opportunity for revisions and were issued a work order," he said, adding that govt should explain how changes were allowed after opening the tender. "Most contracts were awarded at more than double the benchmark amount set by central govt for installing such pumps. There is a difference ranging from Rs 1-3 lakh in contracts for various solar projects from 2-10 kilowatts. This resulted in a difference of nearly Rs 100 crore in total project cost," he alleged. The approval and corruption involved in causing such a significant difference should be investigated, he added. "This misappropriation was carried out by taking a loan of Rs 175 crore from Nabard. Grading was implemented for companies to ensure error-free project execution. It is understood that contracts were awarded to companies that didn't qualify. Contracts were given to companies without grading at the same amount as the one quoted by the lowest bidder," he said. An investigation into all these irregularities should be ordered by removing Anert CEO, Chennithala said.

‘Babua' agitated over exposure of loot, corruption under previous govt: Yogi
1 2 Gorakhpur/Azamgarh: Launching a veiled attack on SP chief Akhilesh Yadav over corruption in JPNIC project, Chief Minister Adityanath on Wednesday said "a CBI inquiry is ongoing into the project and that is why 'Babua' is furious about the exposure of loot and corruption". Although the CM didn't name the SP chief in his speech, the reference was obvious. Launching a massive plantation drive in the state by planting saplings in Gorakhpur, Ayodhya and Azamgarh, the CM attacked the previous SP govt and cited figures related to Purvanchal Expressway and JPNIC and said the revelation of corruption left 'Babua' that rampant corruption and loot was witnessed in the implementation of schemes before 2017, Yogi said: "The SP govt gave tender for the 341-kilometre-long and 110-metre-wide Purvanchal Expressway for Rs 15,200 crore. In contrast, the BJP's double-engine govt increased the width to 120 metres, re-tendered it, and reduced the cost to Rs 11,800 crore." "Those who engaged in corruption are now giving sermons. JP (Jayaprakash Narayan) was known for value-based politics and opposing nepotism, but the SP govt tarnished his name. The JPNIC project, initially costing Rs 200 crore, incurred expenses of Rs 860 crore by March 2017 without completion, prompting a CBI investigation. 'Babua' who was talking about ethics is now agitated by the exposure of corruption," he said. The CM criticised parties questioning the BJP govt, saying that they even "question the campaign of planting 37 crore saplings in a day, while they did nothing when given the opportunity". "They used schemes to plunder public money. Our govt introduced 'One District One Product' and 'One District One Crop', while the SP, Congress, and BSP govts gave 'One District, One Mafia', spreading venom in society in the name of nepotism and firing on the devotees of Lord Ram," Yogi said. He said that under previous govts, forest mafia conducted illegal logging, mining mafias engaged in illegal excavations, and land mafias seized the property of the poor. "There was chaos in the state. Today, the govt has implemented a zero-tolerance policy against mafias across the state. Before 2017, the youth of the state faced an identity crisis. Today, when a person from UP goes outside, the mention of their connection to the state brings a smile to the face of the listener," he said. During his visit to Azamgarh, where he planted a Harishankari Vatika along the expressway in Kerma village, Yogi issued a warning to anti-social and anti-national elements, asserting that the govt was taking decisive action against those involved in such activities. Citing the arrest of Chhangur Baba in Balrampur, who is accused of orchestrating mass conversions, the CM said, "We apprehended a criminal yesterday who was exploiting Hindu women. Such elements are now being dealt with sternly. We will not allow society to fragment. We will crush all anti-national and anti-social forces." Referring to the period before 2017, the CM said that large-scale deforestation and illegal mining by forest and mining mafias led to lawlessness and environmental degradation. "There was no development, only destruction. In contrast, our govt's initiative is transforming heatwaves into greenwaves. Azamgarh has sent many prominent leaders to Parliament but it was only after Nirahua became MP that expressways, a university in the name of Maharaja Suheldev, a music college, and extensive road networks became a reality," the CM said.

Rahul Gandhi's charges against poll panel justified or irresponsible? Experts debate
The big focus of this episode of News Today is on the Gujarat bridge collapse and Rahul Gandhi versus the Election Commission over Bihar electoral roll revision. In Gujarat, 12 people died after a portion of a bridge collapsed in Vadodara. The bridge's weakening structure had been flagged by a panchayat member in 2022, but insufficient maintenance led to this avoidable tragedy. Prime Minister Modi announced ₹2,00,000 compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. While Rahul Gandhi has accused the Election Commission of acting as an agent of the Modi government, questioning the integrity of the electoral roll revision in Bihar. The Election Commission's decision to conduct a special intensive revision of voter lists in Bihar has sparked a heated debate. The move, requiring fresh documentation for those not registered as of 2003, has raised questions about its timing and necessity.
