Tesla Stock Investors Just Got Bad News From Wall Street, but There's a Silver Lining

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares have tumbled 20% this year, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has jumped 5%. Poor financial results driven by market share losses are the main source of consternation, but CEO Elon Musk has arguably damaged the brand with his behavior.
Indeed, Musk has managed to upset both political parties. His support for President Donald Trump and work with the Department of Government Efficiency have irritated Democrats, while his criticism of the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill" and the subsequent feud with Trump have tanked his popularity with Republicans.

Unfortunately, the bad news continues to roll in for Tesla. Consensus earnings estimates among Wall Street analysts have been revised sharply lower in the last 90 days due to headwinds surrounding the core automotive business. Here's what investors should know.
Tesla is losing market share, and Wall Street is cutting earnings estimates
Tesla's deliveries have declined in three of the last five quarters as demand for its aging lineup of electric cars has nosedived amid high interest rates and political backlash. The decline accelerated in the first quarter of 2025, as Tesla's automotive revenue fell by 20%, and non-GAAP (non-generally accepted accounting principles) net income dropped by 40%.
Management laid the blame in part on factory updates required for the recently introduced Model Y Juniper. However, the production lines have been refreshed, and the company is still losing ground. Through April, U.S. market share dropped by 9 percentage points, European market share by 8 percentage points, and Chinese market share by 3 percentage points.
Those market share losses are particularly discouraging because many automakers have seen robust demand for electric cars this year. In fact, global electric car sales soared 38% through April, according to Morgan Stanley.
Additionally, despite domestic manufacturing capacity, Tesla relies on imported auto parts, which are now subject to a 25% tariff. That headwind, coupled with market share losses, has caused analysts to cut earnings forecasts. Consensus estimates for 2025 and 2026 have dropped by 25% and 16%, respectively, in the last three months, according to LSEG.
Here's the big picture: Wall Street now expects Tesla's adjusted earnings to increase at 14% annually through 2026. That consensus makes the current valuation of 145 times adjusted earnings look absurdly expensive. Those figures indicate a price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio of over 10. Multiples above 2 or 3 are generally considered overvalued.
Autonomous ride-sharing is the silver lining for Tesla shareholders
Tesla recently launched its long-awaited autonomous ride-sharing service, albeit on a very limited scale. Roughly a dozen robotaxis hit the streets in Austin, Texas, on June 22, though rides are currently restricted to invitees. Reuters reported a handful of problematic driving incidents during the debut, but nothing overly worrisome and certainly no accidents.
Tesla has been developing its full self-driving (FSD) platform for over a decade, and its approach differs from that of Alphabet 's Waymo, the market leader. Waymos are outfitted with a costly array of cameras, radar, and lidar, and their robotaxis use high-definition maps to navigate. But Teslas are outfitted only with cameras and rely solely on computer vision to navigate, which is more cost-efficient and scalable.
Autonomous ride-sharing promises to be a substantial opportunity for Tesla. RBC analyst Tom Narayan estimates that the company could earn $115 billion in robotaxi revenue in 2040, which he says could equate to about $50 billion in profits. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas estimates that the company could earn $700 billion in robotaxi revenue in 2040, which he says could equate to about $120 billion in profits.
Either way, Tesla could be much more profitable in the future as its focus shifts from low-margin electric car manufacturing to high-margin robotaxi services. Indeed, Elon Musk says Tesla could eventually be the most valuable company in the world as it monetizes its FSD platform and robotics products. That is undoubtedly a silver lining for shareholders in what has been a disappointing year.

Scott Applewhite) WASHINGTON — The changes made to U.S. President Donald Trump's big tax bill in the Senate would pile trillions onto the nation's debt load while resulting in even steeper losses in health care coverage, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in a new analysis, adding to the challenges for Republicans as they try to muscle the bill to passage. The CBO estimates the Senate bill would increase the deficit by nearly $3.3 trillion from 2025 to 2034, a nearly $1 trillion increase over the House-passed bill, which CBO has projected would add $2.4 to the debt over a decade. The analysis also found that 11.8 million more Americans would become uninsured by 2034 if the bill became law, an increase over the scoring for the House-passed version of the bill, which predicts 10.9 million more people would be without health coverage. The stark numbers are yet another obstacle for Republican leaders as they labor to pass Trump's bill by his self-imposed July 4th deadline. Even before the CBO's estimate, Republicans were at odds over the contours of the legislation, with some resisting the cost-saving proposals to reduce spending on Medicaid and food aid programs even as other Republicans say those proposals don't go far enough. Republicans are slashing the programs as a way to help cover the cost of extending some $3.8 trillion in Trump tax breaks put in place during his first term. The push-pull was on vivid display Saturday night as a routine procedural vote to take up the legislation in the Senate was held open for hours as Vice President JD Vance and Republican leaders met with several holdouts. The bill ultimately advanced in a 51-49 vote, but the path ahead is fraught, with voting on amendments still to come. Still, many Republicans are disputing the CBO estimates and the reliability of the office's work. To hoist the bill to passage, they are using a different budget baseline that assumes the Trump tax cuts expiring in December have already been extended, essentially making them cost-free in the budget. The CBO on Saturday released a separate analysis of the GOP's preferred approach that found the Senate bill would reduce deficits by about $500 billion. Democrats and economists decry the GOP's approach as 'magic math' that obscures the true costs of the GOP tax breaks. In addition, Democrats note that under the traditional scoring system, the Republican bill bill would violate the Senate's 'Byrd Rule' that forbids the legislation from increasing deficits after 10 years. In a Sunday letter to Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley, the top Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee, CBO Director Phillip Swagel said the office estimates that the Finance Committee's portion of the bill, also known as Title VII, 'increases the deficits in years after 2034' under traditional scoring. Canada Day is fast approaching and businesses along King Street in downtown Brockville, Ont. are gearing up. While most are decked out with flags, decorations and Canada-themed clothing for sale, a few have gone a step further. O'Malley Kourt Fudgery and Ice Cream Shop is selling Canada Day fudge and cookies. 'We have come up with a Canada Day fudge, its vanilla raspberry with red and white sprinkles,' says owner Joanne Scarlett. 'They just came in Saturday morning, so nice and fresh and ready to go.' Every July 1, the Brockville Pipe and Drum Corps leads a parade from City Hall to Court House Avenue, but this year will be a bit different. The parade will march even further along King St., heading to Hardy Park where a ceremony will be held to celebrate the country's 158th year. That will allow businesses like O'Malley's to get more involved with the parade than years prior. 'It's really appreciated by all the downtown businesses,' says Scarlett. Canada's largest private sector union says a three-week lockout and strike at DHL Express Canada is ending after workers ratified a new agreement. Article content Unifor says the four-year agreement reached with the delivery company was ratified with 72 per cent support from members. Article content The agreement impacts more than 2,100 DHL Express Canada employees who work as truck drivers, couriers and in warehouse and clerical roles. Article content Article content 'I am so proud of all the members of the national bargaining committee for standing strong and fighting for the respect they deserved,' Unifor National President Lana Payne said in a news release Saturday that announced the results of the ratification vote. Article content Article content 'We are excited to resume our operations and welcome back all our team members. Together, we'll prioritize delivering the highest quality service to our customers,' the company's statement said. Article content The workers were locked out after midnight on June 8 and went on strike hours later. The company and the union, who had been negotiating for close to a year, sparred over the use of replacement workers as federal legislation banning the practice took effect during the work stoppage. Article content The German-owned courier, whose 50,000 customers in Canada include Lululemon, Shein and Siemens, continued operations for the first dozen days of the work stoppage and then shut down operations early on the morning of June 20, the same day the legislation took effect. Article content It said the agreement also features increases to short- and long-term disability payments, new mental-health benefits, a rise in severance and updated language around artificial intelligence, robotics and work-from-home policies. Article content The union said the DHL workers will return to work after the ratification, but offered no definite timeline.
