Licence refused for Halifax lap dancing club

BBC News11-06-2025
A lap dancing club in a West Yorkshire town has been refused a licence to operate because of concerns about it being close to a church and a women's refuge.Calderdale Council turned down the latest annual application for a sex entertainment venue licence for La Salsa on Silver Street in Halifax.Councillor Joe Thompson said the town centre had "changed significantly" and he believed the venue was inappropriate for the area.Club owner Reza Shahsavar told the council he would appeal the decision.
The club's licence was previously refused in 2018 but Mr Shahsavar appealed and councillors granted it in early 2019.In the past, White Ribbon, a national charity based in Calderdale that works to prevent violence against women and girls, also opposed the club's application. However, Mr Shahsavar said the club had operated at the premises "without incident" for 21 years. The council received three objections to the latest application, with one raising safety concerns about the club's clientele "hanging around in the area."
Thompson highlighted changes to the area near the club, including a new block of 122 flats and the conversion of the former Atik nightclub into a place of worship."I would also consider that the area is becoming increasingly residential," he said.Mr Shahsavar said the club's clients did not "hang around the locality" and added that the club had security staff and CCTV cameras.

The 2025 Curse of Corrie – how the soap's stars have suffered heartbreaking splits this year

IT is safe to say that 2025 really has not been a great year for the country's longest running soap opera Coronation Street. From budget cuts to episode axes to a major cast cull, the show has found itself in the spotlight for mostly the wrong reasons this year. 7 7 But it isn't just on-screen where things have been going from bad to worse. Beyond the cobbles, the stars of the show have also been dealing with their own personal heartbreaks. It appears to be the year of off-screen splits for the Weatherfield lot too with many of the show's cast calling it a day with their beloved partners. From sirens of years gone past to current fan favourites on the show, it's been a pretty heartbreaking year for the stars of soap. The Sun takes a look at some of the Corrie's casts shock splits and what drove them to breaking point in their once solid romances. Katie McGlynn 7 Sinead Tinker actress Katie McGlynn left her fans stunned when she was revealed to be in a relationship with forgotten The Only Way Is Essex star, Ricky Rayment. This week, it was confirmed that Katie, who started dating former reality star Ricky after meeting on a cruise ship in 2023, had decided to call time on their romance, despite the couple sparking engagement rumours last February. They quietly began to remove traces of each other from their social media before their split was revealed by the MailOnline. One source said: "Katie and Ricky have ended their romance, they're still friends and want to remain civil but in terms of a romantic relationship, it's definitely over." They added that they found it "difficult" to maintain a long distance relationship, with Katie in Manchester and Ricky in Essex. Ex-Coronation Street & Strictly star 'headed for divorce' after just two years as she deletes husband from social media Ricky, who was previously engaged to Marnie Simpson, rose to fame on the ITV reality show in 2012 before leaving 10 years ago. Georgia May Foote 7 Another former soap actress who has been facing a heartbreaking battle is Katy Armstrong star Georgia May Foote. The Sun told earlier this week how the actress was headed for divorce with her husband Kris Evans just two years on from their intimate wedding ceremony. Georgia has removed her wedding ring and wiped all traces of the musician who she once called her 'best friend' from her Instagram page — including glossy snaps from their wedding. A source told The Sun: 'Georgia's marriage to Kris seems to be over. 'It's on the rocks. 'She's looking to the future and is surrounded by friends and her family.' Despite the split, the pair are understood to still be living together as they figure out their next steps amid the split. A source admitted that the pair were happy enough to still be living together but Georgia isn't sure that Kris fits into her life moving forward following a devastating fire at her nail salon. The actress opened the salon amid struggles to find acting work and financial hardship. She is now aiming to crowdfund to raise cash in the wake of her split and the business burning down. Georgia Taylor 7 At the start of the year, it was revealed that Toyah Battersby actress Georgia Taylor had split from her co-star lover. Whilst on-screen, Toyah enjoyed an on-off marriage with husband, Imran Habeeb, away from screens, actress Georgia was dating her on-screen husband's actor in real life - Charlie de Melo. The 44-year-old had been romancing the soap hunk since late 2022 - just months after Charlie's character was killed off the soap and their pretend marriage crumbled. However, it is thought that the pair quietly called it quits in late 2024 before the news was made public in January of this year. A friend revealed: 'Georgia and Charlie are no longer a couple, but they remain friends who care about each other deeply. 'They have lots of happy memories together, but are both really focused on work at the moment and looking forward to the future, there are no hard feelings.' Charlie's character was killed off in June 2022 when he died of a heart attack, leaving millions of Corrie viewers in tears. Georgia said at the time she was heartbroken by Charlie's decision to leave the ITV show. Speaking in 2022, she said: 'I absolutely adore him. He's been a dream. "He's so funny so we laugh a lot but he is honestly one of the most supportive people I have ever worked with." Shortly after Georgia's gushing comments, they found themselves starting a romance in real life. Tina O'Brien 7 Sarah Platt actress Tina was left nursing her own heartbreak earlier this year when it was revealed she had split from her husband, Adam Crofts. It is understood the pair called it quits at the top of the year following a stressful house move. The 41-year-old soap actress decided it would be better for them to live apart after wishing to spend some time alone. They both quickly ditched their wedding rings and decided to unfollow each other online. However, sources insisted they were "still close" and would remain so for the sake of their son, Beau. Tina and Adam started dating in 2011 before marrying on New Year's Eve in Manchester in 2018. Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025 ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap. This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama. Colson Smith - Craig Tinker The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig's on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role. Sue Cleaver - Eileen Grimshaw After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I'm A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she's already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future. Luca Toolan - Mason Radcliffe Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him. Sue Devaney - Debbie Webster In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline. Charlotte Jordan - Daisy Midgeley The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she's hungry to see what other opportunities await. Shelley King - Yasmeen Metcalfe The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.

Kate keeps Louis close to her heart: Princess of Wales's touching tribute to her youngest son as he misses Wimbledon final

Prince Louis was notably absent from SW19 this afternoon as the Wales family arrived to watch the men's Wimbledon final - but his mother ensured she kept him close. The Princess of Wales, 43, who affectionately refers to her seven-year-old son as 'Lou-bug', donned a stunning gold pendant around her neck which contained a sweet tribute to the young royal. The royal mother-of-three accessorised her royal blue outfit with a 9ct gold pendant from Daniella Draper, complete with stunning gemstones. The £3,000 pendant is not only a glamorous accessory; but a sweet tribute to Prince Louis as the gems are the birthstone for April - the month Louis was born. The youngest of the Wales children celebrated his seventh birthday on April 23; with Kensington Palace sharing a sweet video of the cheeky royal playing outside on the Sandringham Estate. He last delighted royal fans with his funny facial expressions and adorable beaming smile, showing off his new adult front teeth, at Trooping the Colour in June. But they were left disappointed by enthusiastic Louis's absence at SW19 this afternoon as he remained at home while the Prince and Princess of Wales and his older siblings, George, 11, and Charlotte, 10, attended the men's final. However Kate ensured Louis was there in spirit, keeping her youngest son close to her heart in the pendant. Mother-of-three Kate has been patron of the All England Lawn and Tennis Club, also known as the AELTC (which organises the day-to-day running of the prestigious tournament), since 2016. The Princess looked radiant in a blue dress as she arrived at the All England Club for the second consecutive day this afternoon - after presenting the trophy at the women's final on Saturday. Kate also wore her ' Wimbledon bow' - a brooch featuring the tournament's iconic colours - which it's believed she has worn every time she has visited Wimbledon. She debuted her green and purple bow back in 2017, when she paired it with a white, short-sleeved dress. More than just a mere accessory, the Princess' go-to Wimbledon brooch is actually a symbol of royal patronage, gifted to her from the Queen Elizabeth II. The women's 2025 final saw Iga Swiatek beat Amanda Asiminova 6-0, 6-0 in a match that lasted just under an hour. Kate appeared overwhelmed upon arrival at the Royal Box on Centre Court and was welcomed by a huge chorus of cheers and a standing ovation. It was reminiscent of the reception she received last year, when she chose the tennis tournament as her first solo outing after taking time away from public duty while being treated for cancer. Today's final sees Jannik Sinner take on Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz - of whom Princess Charlotte is known to be a fan. Mother-of-three Kate pictured today with her only daughter, Princess Charlotte Charlotte delighted fans last year with her animated reactions as she watched her favourite player win the coveted trophy. Throughout the nail-biting match, the young royal winced, cheered, and beamed, as she watched the players compete for the prestigious title. Kate took over the role of patron in 2016 from the late Queen who had held the position for 64 years. The accessory is worn by members of the Committee of Management during the Fortnight – the Main Board of the AELTC and representatives of the LTA. It signifies their responsibilities as the Committee governing the tournament. The Patron has always traditionally been given a Committee bow in recognition of her role, which is why the Duchess has chosen to wear it when visiting The Championships. Prince William, Catherine Princess of Wales, Prince George and Princess Charlotte arriving at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships today Other individuals also given an honorary Committee bow are the Chief Executive. The present colours of dark green and purple were introduced in 1909 as the club's previous colours, blue, yellow, red and green, were too similar to those of the Royal Marines. The royal was praised for her Wimbledon outing yesterday, after she consoled the tearful runner-up Amanda Asiminova who was thrashed by Iga Swiatek in the most one-sided Wimbledon final since 1911. Kate placed her hand on the American's arm and told her to 'keep your head high' following the 23-year-old's 6-0, 6-0 loss on Centre Court in just 57 minutes. Anisimova had to briefly leave the court following her humbling at the hands of an inspired Swiatek, 24, as she recorded a double bagel scoreline in the women's final - the first in 114 years and for only the second time in the tournament's history. Anisimova said meeting Kate 'was the positive of today' and told how she had been 'really kind'. Speaking after the match, she said: 'It was such an honour to meet her. 'I wasn't sure if she was going to come out today, if she was going to be there, so it's just really nice to see her. 'She definitely had a few things to say that were making me emotional again.' A tearful Anisimova wiped away tears during her post-match interview on court as she praised Swiatek and said she had 'run out of gas a bit today'. She was playing in her first Wimbledon final and said 'she would never forget this experience'. All of Us Strangers co-stars Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal were also sat in the Royal Box, cracking up in laughter ahead of the match Nicole, 58, exuded sophistication in a cream double-breasted blazer layered over a smart collared shirt, as she took her seat in the Royal Box Anisimova broke down again as she mentioned how her mother had flew in from America that morning to watch her. 'Thank you for being here and breaking the superstition of not flying in - it isn't why I lost here,' she joked. Anisimova: 'I know I didn't have enough today but I will keep putting in the work and I hope to be back here one day.' A victorious Swiatek, the first Polish woman to win Wimbledon, also offered words of encouragement to Anisimova. 'First I want to congratulate Amanda for an amazing two weeks. You should be proud of the work you are doing and I hope we will play more finals her,'' she said. 'I didn't even dream, for me it was way too far. I feel like I am already an experienced player after winning the Slams before but I never expected this one. 'This year I really, really enjoyed it and feel I improved my form here. 'I am always going to remember the opening of champagne bottles between serves! It is a sound that will keep me away at night!' The only ever time there has been a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline in a Grand Slam final was in 1988 when Steffi Graf beat Natasha Zvereva in the French Open. For her appearance yesterday, Kate donned a custom Self-Portrait white ensemble. The two-piece outfit featured a high collared, military-style belted top and a flowing midi skirt. Kate has worn designs from Self-Portrait on a number of occasions, including a 2023 Wimbledon appearance, where she wore a similar two-piece outfit, but that time, in green. She finished the ensemble with a pair of Gianvito Rossi suede slingback heeled pumps in cream, and Anya Hindmarch's Neeson Small Square Tote bag in cream, which retails for £950. Her jewellery included a gold Halcyon Days bracelet and Cartier earrings. She also gave a sweet nod to her husband Prince William, wearing what appeared to be her Cartier Bleu watch, which Prince William gave her as an anniversary gift in 2014. Last year also saw Carlos Alcaraz in the final, which he won, beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets. After leaving the court following the trophy ceremony, the princess and Alcaraz had a conversation in a room inside the tournament's main stadium. 'You played so well,' Kate told him. 'Enjoy the win.'
