Family to gather 'in private' to mourn murdered girl
A teen allegedly murdered by her housemates will be laid to rest in a funeral service as loved ones remember the "free-spirited" girl.
Family and friends donned in bright colours will farewell Pheobe Bishop in southern Queensland on Monday afternoon, six weeks after the 17-year-old disappeared.
Pheobe was last seen near Bundaberg airport about 8.30am on May 15 after booking a trip to Western Australia to see her boyfriend.
Queensland Police allege her housemates, Tanika Bromley and James Wood, drove Pheobe close to the airport in a grey Hyundai, but no one left the car.
Pheobe was allegedly murdered and her body was moved more than once from the Good Night Scrub National Park, an hour's drive from the airport.
Phone data had led officers to focus their search on the park before her remains were found on June 6.
Pheobe's mother, Kylie Johnson, had promised throughout the long search that drew national interest to bring Pheobe home.
Now she will mourn her daughter at a funeral service in Bundaberg on Monday afternoon.
Ms Johnson told the ABC she was "devastated this is something we have had to navigate".
"I would tell people to hug their kids a little tighter, tell them you love them multiple times a day, watch that silly movie, dance to the song and capture every moment in your memories," she said in a statement.
The family has requested a "media blackout" during the funeral service.
Multiple candlelit vigils attended by hundreds have been held across Bundaberg and Gin Gin in recent weeks, remembering how Pheobe lived life to the fullest.
Her family has previously celebrated Pheobe for being free-spirited, beautiful, loving, and kind.
Wood, 34, and Bromley, 33, remain behind bars to face court on August 11, charged with murder and interfering with a corpse.

Chicago man charged in fatal shooting in Austin neighborhood
A man was charged with allegedly shooting another man to death in the Austin neighborhood last month. Jaden Pointer, 19, was arrested on Friday in the 1000 block of North Mason Avenue. He was charged with three felony counts of first-degree murder, murder with strong probability of death or injury, and murder with other forcible felony. Man sentenced to 25 years to life for fatal stabbing of 9/11 emergency responder
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York man on Monday was sentenced to serve 25 years to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of a veteran emergency worker while she was on a break, according to prosecutors Peter Zisopoulos, 37, was convicted in May of second-degree murder for killing Lt. Alison Russo-Elling, then 61, as she walked from her fire department station to a nearby store for food in 2022. She was remembered by mourners as a dedicated public servant who responded to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. There's no indication that Zisopoulos knew Russo-Elling. His public defender lawyer has said that Zisopoulos 'has a past psychiatric history going back to 2018.' The lawyer did not immediately respond to a message left with his office on Monday. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz called the killing 'brutal and senseless.' Russo-Elling was months away from retirement when she died. She was promoted posthumously from EMS lieutenant to the rank of captain. 'Today, we are appreciative that her killer has been sentenced to the maximum punishment: 25 years to life. This sentencing speaks to the brutality of the crime, and though it won't bring her back, I pray it will finally give her family the closure they deserve,' said Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker. Monday's sentencing came after the unrelated fatal shooting of two on-duty firefighters in Idaho over the weekend.
