Louth GAA launch fundraising drive as Wee County Goes Racing

The launch event brought together key sponsors and supporters of Louth GAA to celebrate both recent on-field successes and the continued development of Gaelic games throughout the county.
The evening highlighted the generous backing from main sponsor Michael Lynch Menswear, along with returning sponsors Protection & Prosperity Financial Services, Powerscreen New England, Morgan Fuels, and FLC Frank Lynch & Co. The county board was also delighted to welcome three new sponsors to the Wee County family: IFM, Anglo Printers, and Deeside Agri Services.
'The support from our business community has been phenomenal,' said Sean McClean, County Board Chairperson. 'Their commitment allows us to continue the vital work of developing Gaelic games across Louth.'
The launch provided an opportunity to reflect on Louth's remarkable 2025 season, including appearances in the men's Leinster final, minor final, and u20 Leinster final. These achievements demonstrate the positive impact of the county board's ongoing development programs and emphasise that this success requires continued investment and community support to maintain momentum and build for the future.
Following the tremendous success of last year's race day, anticipation is already building for the 2025 event. 'Everyone had such a fantastic day last year,' said Colm Marry, chairperson of the Wee County Goes Racing committee. 'We're excited to welcome you back to Fairyhouse for another great day of racing and fundraising.'
The 'Wee County Goes Racing' event promises to be a highlight of the Louth GAA calendar, combining the excitement of horse racing with crucial fundraising for the county's Gaelic games development.
Tables of 10 are available to book for €1500 from any committee member, while single seats can be purchased for €150.

Jamie Osborne and Thomas Clarkson set to experience the joy of becoming a Lion

The British & Irish Lions go into their final midweek match of this 2025 tour against the First Nations & Pasifika XV with two different narratives around team selection. First, the joy of becoming a Lion for the likes of Jamie Osborne and Thomas Clarkson, two young Irishmen among a group of five debutants handed the opportunity of a rugby-playing lifetime to join a select group of players representing the best of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh rugby, if only for one game. Secondly, an opportunity of a different kind, for Josh van der Flier and Jac Morgan, Blair Kinghorn and Garry Ringrose and others besides to stake their claim for Test selection against Australia this Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They will offer contrasting motivations at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday but head coach Andy Farrell will demand that this team of Test hopefuls and first timers will be synchronised enough to keep the Lions' momentum rolling from last Saturday's Brisbane victory over the Wallabies into this weekend's potential Test decider for the tourists. Naturally enough, the battle for insertion into a winning Test 23 will occupy coaches' minds most ahead of their final selection meeting on Wednesday night here in Melbourne but that did not stop assistant coach Simon Easterby waxing lyrical about the opportunity this midweek game presents to Clarkson, 25, and Osborne, 24. 'It goes without saying, the quality of those two individuals,' Easterby said. Jamie Osborne during a training session. Pic: ©INPHO/Billy Stickland. 'Tom's fought through a pretty tough position at Leinster, never mind in the Irish squad, and he's put in some brilliant performances. 'He really has stood up and bringing them on the 'Emerging Ireland' tour. He was certainly someone that we felt could step up over the next couple of years, but he's been excellent. 'He's fought for everything and in a pretty tough position where being a tighthead probably takes a good few years to learn your trade, he's certainly in a really good place. 'Jamie has had a brilliant couple of years. The performance he had in South Africa last summer, his performance for Leinster playing 12, 13, wing, 15, it was pretty impressive, the positions he can cover and the quality that he brings to the group as well. 'I'm really pleased with the two of them. They fully deserve being here and no doubt they'll perform really well tomorrow.' Ten days on from a blowout win against a scratch AUSNZ Invitational XV that failed to live up collectively that their teamsheet suggested of the individuals concerned, this First Nations & Pasifika XV will at least have a purpose and identity as the first side of its kind selected from Samoan, Fijian, Tongan, Māori and Indigenous Australian cultures. Their head coach Toutai Kefu, won 60 caps for the Wallabies and has named a matchday squad of 17 players with Pasifika heritage and six indigenous First Nations players included. Even so, they will find it tough going against a hardened Lions side bristling with intent and ambition for Test recognition this Saturday but Easterby gave Kefu's side the respect they deserve. 'You look at the teamsheet and they have some incredible individuals. They'll try to make a mark. 'Some of them have played against the Lions on this trip already, some of them won't, and that is probably is something those players will feel they want to lay down a bit of a marker and bring their own skillset and individuality to their game. It's certainly an impressive outfit when you look at it on paper. 'I guess our challenge, as it always is, is to be as connected as we can be in terms of the way we play, in terms of the guys who aren't involved to prepare the team that plays tomorrow. Everyone's been chipping in and been part of that. 'It's an exciting team, but certainly an exciting challenge and opportunity for our guys to go out and stake a claim for the next couple of weeks.' FIRST NATIONS & PASIFIKA XV (Cultural heritage in brackets): Andy Muirhead (First Nations); Triston Reilly (First Nations), Lalakai Foketi (Māori & Tonga), David Feliuai (Samoa), Filipo Daugunu (Fiji); Kurtley Beale (First Nations) – captain; Kalani Thomas (Māori); Lington Ieli (Fiji), Brandon Paenga-Amosa (Samoa & Māori), Taniela Tupou (Tonga); Darcy Swain (Samoa), Lukhan Salakaia-Loto (Samoa); Sere Uru (Fiji), Charlie Gamble (Tonga), Tuaina Taii Tualima (Samoa). Replacements: Richie Asiata (Samoa), Marley Pearce (Māori & First Nations), Mesake Doge (Fiji), Mesake Vocevoce (Fiji), Rob Leota (Samoa), Harrison Goddard (First Nations), Jack Debreczeni (Cook Island), Jarrah McLeod (First Nations). BRITISH & IRISH LIONS: B Kinghorn (Scotland); D Graham (Scotland), J Osborne (Ireland), O Farrell (England) – captain, D van der Merwe (Scotland); F Smith (England), B White (Scotland); P Schoeman (Scotland), J George (England), F Bealham (Ireland); J Ryan (Ireland), S Cummings (Scotland); J Morgan (Wales), J van der Flier (Ireland), H Pollock (England). Replacements: E Ashman (Scotland), R Sutherland (Scotland), T Clarkson (Ireland), G Brown (Scotland), B Earl (England), A Mitchell (England), M Smith (England), G Ringrose (Ireland). New Lidl store in Wexford to bring jobs boost to area as special guest lined up to cut the ribbon

Doing the honours and cutting the ribbon of the new store at 8 a.m. will be local ladies' Gaelic football star Aisling Halligan. The second Lidl store in the town, after Whitemill Road, this will bring the number of stores that the supermarket chain has across the county to five. Lidl have promised a 'premium shopping experience', with two deposit return scheme machines, self-service checkouts, customer restrooms and baby-changing facilities, as well as an in-store bakery and off-licence. Externally, the store benefits from regenerative landscaping with native wildflower areas, bicycle storage, a locally sourced Wexford stone entrance wall, and a large car park. The Rocksborough store also promises to be ultra energy efficient with features such as a certified Energy Management System, energy efficient tech and solar panels. Early bird shoppers are invited to come along on opening day and enjoy instore entertainment and opening day offers. The first ten customers will also receive a €20 gift voucher to spend on their shopping. Alongside this, Lidl will donate €1,000 in Lidl vouchers to Wexford Women's Refuge. Speaking about the honour of cutting the ribbon, Aisling Halligan praised the supermarket chain for their long-standing support of ladies' football. 'Through its longstanding partnership with the LGFA, Lidl has been hugely supportive of its communities and it's great to see them further investing in the Wexford area by bringing a state-of-the-art store and creating employment for local people.' Aisling said. "I'm honoured to be asked to cut the ribbon on the new store and I'm excited to get the chance to meet with Lidl shoppers and celebrate the opening with everyone. It's great news for Wexford and a very positive boost for the area.' Regional Managing Director at Lidl Ireland Niall Murray said excitement is building to welcome shoppers to the new store. 'Wexford has recently enjoyed significant growth in population, both in terms of residents and workers, and this new store is conveniently located to serve a thriving local community,' he said. 'Throughout the construction and development phases, feedback from the community and support for the new store has been incredibly positive and I'm looking forward to throwing open the doors and welcoming everyone into store later this month.'

Meet the new Shamrock Rovers striker who is a Tailteann Cup winner with Down

He is a Tailteann Cup winner with Down, but it's not his Gaelic football career that is on an upward curve. John McGovern has committed his future to the 11-a-side game and after a first start for his new club Shamrock Rovers he now has his eye on a European debut. McGovern arrived at the Hoops after an impressive campaign with Dungannon Swifts last year, when he scored 14 goals in 29 appearances. He could have signed for Rovers last January, but was determined to finish his Business and Information Technology studies in Queens University. A sporting all-rounder, with Collingwood Cup credentials too, he will travel to Gibraltar with the rest of Stephen Bradley's squad tomorrow ahead of Thursday's Europa Conference League clash. 'For me, whenever I was joining, it was the chance of European football as well, that there would be European football there as well,' he said of his decision to move to Rovers. 'So it's an exciting venture for me, playing in Europe for the first time.' But for a controversial red card, McGovern could have been heading back up north this week to face Cliftonville in Europe. Instead, it's their conquerors St Joseph's. 'Whenever you go into Europe it won't be easy or smooth sailing. 'Rovers have shown down the years that they deserve to be in Europe, they have worked hard and done well, that's why we are here.' A former underage international with Northern Ireland, McGovern could easily have opted to continue playing Gaelic football for Ballyholland GAC and Down. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice . 'We won the Tailteann Cup last summer,' he said of his time with the senior intercounty side. 'I balanced both sports from the age of five, I went back and always wanted to play for Down. 'Things were not going too well with Newry City at the time I was there, so I went back and wanted to keep fit and give it a crack at playing Gaelic. 'I went for six months and we won a Tailteann but I had to dedicate the final year to playing for Dungannon and Newry, and ended up here. 'Putting that focus on playing soccer has paid off.' While Rovers had come in for McGovern last winter, he also had contact from clubs across the water. An opportunity to play for the Hoops, he says, was too good to turn down. 'That was my final year in university so it was about getting a full season under my belt playing Premiership football and getting my university degree done, then exploring options,' he explained. 'So throughout the year I dedicated myself to playing for Dungannon and then my university. 'Stephen Bradley contacted me in January and tried to bring me in, the timing wasn't right then but I said I'd be hugely interested. 'Rovers are the biggest club in Ireland. You could go across the water, clubs in Scotland and lower league clubs in England were interested, but you look at the success Rovers have had since they were founded, league titles, FAI Cups and Europe most years, that was an incentive for me. 'I want to get better playing with better players at a bigger club so it was a good step for me so playing LOI was something I wanted to do.'
