Why it's healthier to eat like it's the ‘80s — and how you can use the ‘ABCTs' rule to do it

Reaganomics. MTV. Power suits and shoulder pads. The '80s were loud, proud — and surprisingly healthy at the dinner table.
That's according to Jodi Velazquez, an award-winning author, television co-host and mom on a mission, whose new book 'Know the Enemy: Preventing Weight Gain, Diabetes & Disease' makes the case for reviving vintage nutrition.
The Post sat down with Velazquez to learn more about what raising a daughter with diabetes taught her, where today's food culture went wrong and how to feed your family like it's 1985.

Finger pricks and food fights
When Velazquez's firstborn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 19 months old, she and her husband left the hospital with a bag full of medical supplies — and no clue what the future held.
What followed was a crash course in survival. Velazquez was suddenly on 24/7 duty, pricking her toddler's finger every two hours to check blood sugar levels.
'That's where I really got my education, because I was able to see what every single food did to her, and what exercise and lack of exercise did to her,' she said.
By the time her daughter turned 10, Velazquez had logged nearly 30,000 finger pricks and administered 8,700 insulin shots — all while trying to shield her child from a food culture built on sugar, temptation and processed junk.
But it wasn't always this way.
Supersized and sedentary
In her new book, Velazquez highlights several factors she thinks have contributed to America's growing waistline.
Flash back to 40 years ago: People ate out less, and when they did, it was usually local spots serving fresh, balanced meals.

'In the '70s and the '80s, we didn't eat fast food every day or every week,' she said. 'Our diets were more consistent.'
Fast-forward to today, and research shows that many Americans no longer regularly fire up their stoves at home. Our concept of the 'dining out experience' has also shifted from sit-down family restaurants to quick, cheap, ultra-processed meals on the go.
Just look at the numbers. Velazquez notes that there are now more than 25,000 fast-food chains in the US, a staggering 1,000% increase since 1970.
McDonald's alone has exploded from 1,000 restaurants in 1968 to more than 14,000 today. Starbucks, meanwhile, has added more than 10,000 new stores since 1982, she writes.

But it's not just the number of fast-food sites that has changed — it's what's on the menu.
Take soda, for example: In the 1950s, a typical soft drink was 6.5 ounces and 85 calories. By 2014, that ballooned to 20 ounces and 250 calories — nearly triple the size, and triple the sugar, Velazquez points out.
Why the bloat? Blame consumer demand and fierce competition among fast-food chains.
'Everybody wants to have the new thing, the tastiest thing, the craziest thing, the biggest thing, and people fall for it,' Velazquez said. 'I think it's marketing.'
Today's fast-food frenzy also means our eating habits are wildly inconsistent compared to the more streamlined diets of the past.
'If you're eating a six-inch hamburger with french fries at a fast-food place one day and the next day you have spaghetti and meatballs at home, that's a very different variation in fat, sugar and salt,' Velazquez explained.

For diabetics, this means erratic blood sugar levels. For the rest of us, it leads to peaks and valleys in our energy levels.
Parents, Velazquez said, struggle even more these days to track what's going into their children's bodies. Consider the classroom rewards, birthday treats and after-school sweets during playdates or day care — just a few sugary temptations that accumulate throughout the day.
'If you're a parent and your child doesn't have an issue like allergies or diabetes, there may not be a need to tell you,' she said. 'So that means parents might not even know that their kids are getting all of these calories outside of the house.'
Worse yet, the concept of three square meals a day is becoming a thing of the past.
'We have the availability of food everywhere now,' Velazquez said. 'I think a lot of people are grazing all day, getting packaged and processed foods here and there.'
But Velazquez emphasizes that time between meals is essential for our bodies.
'Breakfast, lunch and dinner gives your pancreas time to have a break. It gives your insulin time to work,' Velazquez said. 'You might have two or three hours in between meals, and I think that's a lost concept for a lot of people.'

Despite consuming lower-quality foods in larger portions more frequently, we're moving less than ever. Studies show a significant decline in physical activity in recent decades, driven by factors like the rise of desk jobs, the convenience of automobiles and modern technology.
Taken together, these factors have ignited a nationwide crisis, with nearly 260 million Americans expected to be overweight or obese by 2050. This puts them at increased risk for a laundry list of serious chronic health conditions, including heart disease and stroke.
'The scary thing is that if you were born after 1990, you were born into a world saturated with fast food and oversized portions,' Velazquez said.
'Now there's an uptick in young people getting diabetes, and those people don't have anything to revert back to,' she added. 'They don't have those basic, good nutritional habits.'
Looking backward for a healthier future
Raising a diabetic child in the 21st century wasn't easy for Velazquez. It required trial and error, diligent tracking, extensive research and even some negotiating with her daughter.
But the effort paid off: Today, Marlo is a healthy, thriving 26-year-old.
The lessons Velazquez learned while managing her daughter's diabetes reshaped her entire household's approach to food. Now, she's passing those insights on to others.

How to eat like the '80s in 2025
Returning to the basics of 'vintage nutrition' is the essential foundation for making sustainable, practical changes to your everyday diet, Velazquez explained.
'To feed your family like it's 1980 means just avoiding those high sugar and unhealthy fat foods that are out there, being active, having consistency in your diet and just having breakfast, lunch and dinner, with maybe a very small snack in between,' she said.
A lot of these changes start right at home.
'When I go out, I seem to overeat because the portions are bigger,' Velazquez said. 'When I cook for myself, I have more energy and I feel better. I eat well and I don't eat a lot of high sugar and high fat foods. I can control how much salt goes into my meals.'
'It doesn't have to be bland, like hospital meals, but it also doesn't have to all be sprinkled and dipped and battered,' she continued. 'I think that's where we crossed the line.'

To help families remember the core principles of vintage nutrition, Velazquez created a simple acronym: Follow the ABCTs.
A: Avoid unhealthy, high-fat and high-sugar foods.
B: Be active and avoid being sedentary, especially after meals.
C: Consistency in your food choices.
T: Timing.
She also has a clear message for parents: 'Always lead by example. If you're overeating, your kids are going to do the same thing.'
In her book, Velazquez emphasizes the value of getting kids moving, teaching them how food affects their bodies and inviting them into the kitchen to learn those lessons firsthand.
She also encourages parents to rethink how they talk about weight with their children.
'Little subtle reminders are great, like telling them here and there about trying to keep your weight in a good range because it's healthier for your body, not because of the way you want to look,' she said.

The FDA is cracking down on a potent compound found in kratom supplements: 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH. Why it matters: Products with 7-OH — which acts like an opioid and has been dubbed " legal morphine" by researchers — have surged in popularity. The latest: On Tuesday, the FDA recommended more regulation of 7-OH products, and warned consumers about their risks. Last month, the FDA sent a letter to companies about the illegal marketing of 7-OH products, calling them potentially dangerous and unproven. By the numbers: Federal survey data from 2021 suggests around 0.7% of Americans 12 and older use kratom products, but recent estimates from the American Kratom Association and Journal of Psychoactive Drugs put usage at 9.1% — or over 20 million people. Catch up quick: Kratom extracts were introduced to the market in September 2023 — five years after the DEA announced an intention to ban kratom. In the years since, "it was like an unofficial war between these manufacturers to see who could get the most potent extract product out there," says Chris McCurdy, a professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Florida who's studied kratom for over 20 years. What is kratom "Kratom" can refer to the plant or powdered leaf — or kratom-derived concentrates in forms like tablets, gummies, drink mixes and shots that are available in some smoke shops and gas stations. The supplement is typically pronounced "kray-tom" in the U.S., but the plant found in Southeast Asia is called "kruh-TOM," McCurdy says. It's been marketed as a mood booster, pain reliever and remedy for symptoms of quitting opioids, but that doesn't mean all kratom products are " natural and safe," according to the Mayo Clinic. Is kratom dangerous? Kratom leaf products are like "a light beer" in terms of potency, McCurdy says. But once you extract and concentrate compounds like OH-7 — removing the natural plant material — he says you're closer to Everclear, the grain spirit that can be 95% alcohol by volume. The kratom plant has OH-7 only in trace amounts, but potency in herbal supplements varies widely. OH-7 "is a pure opioid," McCurdy says. That means it interacts with opioid receptors just like prescription opioids would, so researchers warn it could be highly addictive. "It's more potent than morphine in treating pain in animals," McCurdy says. "The fact that it's available without a prescription is really problematic." Another potential danger: Residual oxidants and other contaminants could remain in concentrated kratom products made in unregulated labs. The big picture: As of March, 24 states regulate kratom or its components in some manner, per the Legislative Analysis and Public Policy Association.

Kennedy Announces Plan to Restrict Some Kratom Products

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Tuesday announced a plan to restrict access to a derivative of the kratom plant readily available online and in vape stores and used by millions of Americans to alleviate pain. In recent years, manufacturers have isolated and amplified a compound in kratom to make a more potent product. Concerns about addiction to 7-OH, or 7-hydroxymitragynine, have mounted because it binds to opioid receptors in the brain. Dr. Marty Makary, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said his agency would begin the process to officially 'schedule' 7-OH, classifying the drug according to its risk for abuse and accepted benefits. The final steps will be handled by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Though 7-OH is not a traditional opioid derived from the poppy plant, Mr. Kennedy pointed to the opioid epidemic and said the new effort was meant to avert a similar wave of addiction. The action comes as the F.D.A. has struggled with a growing number of dangerous and even deadly psychoactive products lining gas station and vape shop shelves, from psychedelic candy bars — linked to three deaths last summer — to THC snacks to 'gas-station heroin.' The F.D.A. has been escalating enforcement against companies that make 7-OH products in recent months. The agency sent seven warning letters to manufacturers, a precursor to stricter enforcement action, which can range from fines to product impoundment. Dr. Makary said at a news briefing on Tuesday that federal health officials were trying to reverse a record of being 'asleep at the wheel' in the face of a public health crisis, citing the example of cigarettes. 'Let's be honest,' he said. 'There's also a lot we don't know. This may be the calm before the storm. It may be the tip of the iceberg, but let's be aggressive and proactive.' People can buy 7-OH online and in smoke shops, where it's often labeled kratom and 7 or 7-OH. It comes in the form of gummies, chewables, small drinks or tablets that melt in the mouth. Dr. Makary said the agency was issuing a report on 7-OH, a letter to health care providers, and a warning to consumers about the risks associated with 7-OH products. According to the F.D.A., 7-OH is not lawful in dietary supplements or when added to foods. The agency said there are no approved drugs containing 7-OH nor any regulatory basis for companies to claim that the products relieve pain or anxiety, as some do. 'Consumers who use 7-OH products are exposing themselves to products that have not been proven safe or effective for any use,' according to the F.D.A. The announcement runs counter to a plan unveiled during the Biden administration to lower restrictions on marijuana, a process known as rescheduling. That effort has hit procedural hurdles, but it was meant to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug, akin to cocaine or heroin, to Schedule III, given its potential medical benefits. For 7-OH, federal officials are moving in the opposite direction, taking an unscheduled substance and advising the D.E.A. to place it in Schedule I. Such a process begins with federal health agencies performing an eight-factor analysis of a product's risk profile and potential for abuse, among other concerns. Kirsten Elin Smith, a Johns Hopkins University assistant professor who studies kratom, said she was initially very concerned about 7-OH when it began to show up online about two years ago. She said she braced herself for a flood of reports of harm. Those reports did not come, she said, though perhaps because there are no tests to detect 7-OH in the blood. There are routine tests for another component of kratom, but those did not yield evidence of increasing harm, either, she said. 'If you had asked me a year ago, I would have said this is evil,' Dr. Smith said. 'At this point I'm a little more equivocal.' She said she's been working to survey several hundred users and conduct in-depth interviews. Some people report benefits, such as improved mood and quality of life. Others tell her that 7-OH is habit-forming. Though most of the people she has surveyed said the product should not be prohibited, nearly 15 percent said they favored greater restrictions. Dr. Smith said she encountered similar results while studying kratom, which provides a different medley of psychoactive components. Overall, she said, more research needs to be done. 'Kratom is not a panacea without risk either,' she said. 'Both kratom products and 7-OH products have a benefit-risk profile.' Mac Haddow, a senior fellow on public policy for the American Kratom Association, which represents makers of botanical kratom, said his group has been sounding the alarm about 7-OH since it arrived on the market. Mr. Haddow applauded Tuesday's announcement. 'You can get addicted to 7-OH in a couple of days, and it's a horrible situation to get off of it,' he said. The F.D.A. has encountered a spate of problems with unauthorized products that have popped up in smoke shops and gas stations across the country in recent years. Last summer, more than 160 people fell ill and three died after eating Diamond Shruumz candy bars, which contained an array of unauthorized ingredients, some of which had psychedelic properties. People who ate the bars reported seizures, loss of consciousness and hallucinations. The agency has also scrambled to restrict tianeptine products known as 'gas-station heroin' after a number of reports of injury, addiction and death.

FIRST ON FOX: Duke Health, the medical arm of Duke University in North Carolina, is seeing more than $100 million in federal funding frozen in compliance with President Donald Trump's executive order prohibiting DEI practices. In a letter to Duke President Vincent Price, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Adam Silver, and School of Medicine Dean Mary Klotman, Secretaries Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Linda McMahon outlined that racial preferences in hiring, student admissions, governance and patient care "betray" the mission of American health care and "endanger human lives." "The United States invests in medical care and research because of the sacredness of human life and value of human health," the letter read. "There is arguably no other area of our educational system where the rejection of merit is more dangerous than in medicine, where the competence of doctors means the difference between life and death for patients, and where scientific discovery is the difference between life-saving cures and the ravages of disease." Kennedy and McMahon said their respective agencies have been investigating allegations that Duke Health's practices may be violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and Section 1557 of the ObamaCare law. Therefore, the secretaries said, the situation "render[s] Duke Health unfit for any further financial relationship with the federal government." A senior administration official told Fox News Digital the ultimate amount of the frozen funding is $108 million. The Civil Rights Act code cited prohibits recipients of financial assistance from denying benefits or discriminating against individuals based on race, color or national origin. The Affordable Care Act section cited extends health care protections for federal funding that forbid the aforementioned discrimination; adding the fields of disability, age and sex. Duke Health allegedly engaged in "illegal and wrongful racial preferences and discriminatory activity in recruitment, student admissions, scholarships and financial aid, mentoring and enrichment programs, hiring, promotion, and more," according to Kennedy and McMahon. They called such racism "vile" and said it "hides behind a smug superiority" that "such [so-called] 'benefitted' races cannot compete under merit-based consideration." "Affirmative action undermines America's commitment to merit-based justice and violates the nation's civil rights laws. In the medical context, this illegal preferencing also breaks faith with patients, hinders medical discovery, and jeopardizes human life and health." The feds kept the door open to future partnerships with Duke, noting the school and hospital has long had a commitment to medical excellence and would prefer to see it "repair these problems." In order to return to good standing, Duke Health must review all policies and procedures in terms of illegal use of race preference, take immediate action and provide verifiable assurances to Washington that the medical unit will operate in "good faith" oncemore. "If the alleged offending policies, practices, and programs are found to exist and remain unrectified after six months, or if at any time the Merit and Civil Rights Committee and federal government reach an impasse, the federal government will commence enforcement proceedings as appropriate," the secretaries warned in closing. Fox News Digital reached out to Duke via Price's office and also solicited comment from Silver via his day job as NBA commissioner.
