GOF raids illegal Batu Gajah factory, seizes RM10mil worth of metal
The Malay language daily reported that the raid, which took place at around 7:30pm Wednesday, was led by the General Operations Force (GOF) in collaboration with the Perak Environment Department (DOE) and the Batu Gajah District Council.
Northern Brigade GOF deputy commander Asst Comm Shamsul Baharin Aman said that during the operation, a large amount of aluminium metal, as well as various machines and equipment believed to be used for illegal processing, were discovered.
"This premises was conducting aluminium processing activities without a valid licence or permit under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
"In this raid, a 37-year-old local man, who claimed to be the factory manager, was arrested for further investigation," he told Sinar Harian at a press conference here on Thursday (July 17).
He added that in addition to the aluminium metal, various equipment, including a lorry, was seized, with the total value reaching RM11.81mil.
He noted that initial investigations revealed that the factory operator is believed to have been in operation for the past two years, with the assistance of 10 workers.
"Each processed aluminium metal product would be shipped overseas through appointed agents.
"The factory's estimated monthly profit is around RM20,000. We suspect there are elements of smuggling of raw materials brought in from abroad before being processed and re-exported," he said.
Meanwhile, the Perak DOE director Datuk Dr Mohammad Ezanni Mat Salleh said that one of the main materials processed included industrial waste categorised under code SW422, which is a mixture of metals and chemical solvents known as a form of scheduled waste that is prohibited from being processed without a valid licence.
"During the inspection, we observed burning with tyre pyrolysis oil, which is extremely serious when burned as it causes a noticeable odour if not properly controlled in the air," he said.
The case is being investigated under provisions of the Environmental Quality Act 1974; Section 6 of the Secondhand Dealers Act 1946 and the Trade, Business and Industrial By-Laws 2017.

SWCorp installs CCTV to combat illegal dumping in Melaka
MELAKA: The Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is stepping up efforts to combat illegal waste dumping by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor the situation and facilitate legal action. Its director, Nor Zaki Md Nor, said four out of 12 recurring illegal dumping hotspots in the state, Telok Mas, Alor Gajah, Batu Berendam, and Jasin, have so far been equipped with mobile CCTV units. He told reporters in Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah today that the initiative, which began this year, will be expanded to other identified locations in stages. "The installation of CCTV is a new approach we're implementing to curb illegal dumping by identifying offenders and facilitating legal action. "So far, we've seen promising results, with a 60 to 70 percent reduction at these sites, eventually leading to the closure of several hotspots," he said after the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme. The programme was held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) initiative for the Duyong state constituency, officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Nor Zaki said most of the illegal dumping sites were used for the disposal of solid waste from the construction, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors, involving unlicensed cleaning operators. He said that last year, one case involving illegal dumping was successfully brought to court, resulting in a RM20,000 fine. Separately, he said the Clean City Campaign is currently in progress, focusing on cleaning up towns and urban centres in conjunction with the WRUR programme. "The campaign involves thorough cleaning efforts, regardless of whether the area falls under our service jurisdiction or not," he said. Meanwhile, Mohd Noor Helmy said the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme saw the participation of 180 individuals, including SWCorp staff, members of the Malaysian Volunteer Department (Rela), and residents. He said that Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah was selected for the gotong-royong initiative to address cleanliness issues in areas not covered by the Historical Melaka City Council or SWCorp. – Bernama

Selangor athletics dispute heads to court after officials' lifetime bans
KUALA LUMPUR: Six disgruntled district presidents slapped with lifetime bans are taking Selangor Athletics Association (SAA) president Nurhayati Karim and her deputy A. Varughese to court. SAA vice-president and disciplinary committee chairman Varughese confirmed the suspensions of the six — Datuk S.M. Muthu (Petaling), K. Pregash (Kuala Langat), R. Murugan (Hulu Langat), G. Mohan (Klang), Fauzi Nanivanan Abdullah (Hulu Selangor), and S. Gunaseelan (Sepang) — over alleged breaches of the constitution on June 17. The officials were given two weeks to appeal the decision, but none did. However, Muthu, speaking at a press conference on Sunday, insisted the lifetime bans were unlawful. "We did nothing wrong. We are volunteers and abided by the constitution," said Muthu. "It is Nurhayati who violated the rules." He questioned Nurhayati's claim that RM15,000 was spent to send 47 athletes to the Perlis Open last October, allegedly funded by both the SAA and the Hulu Selangor district. "Fauzi, the Hulu Selangor president, denies contributing a single sen. The financial statement is questionable," said Muthu. "Nurhayati also failed to distribute the SAA accounts to district representatives as required under Clause 14.4 of the constitution. "Treasurer Wan Noraina Asyiqeen Ariffin missed three consecutive meetings and should have been removed from her post." Muthu also alleged that both Nurhayati and the treasurer submitted the accounts to the Sports Commissioner's Office without signing the required forms, and that the appointed auditor was not given time to scrutinise the documents. "We raised these issues at the AGM on April 26, but Nurhayati walked out midway. She promised to respond within two weeks but never did. "This is a clear breach of the constitution," he added. "We've now decided to take the matter to court. We will appoint a lawyer within the week. Let the court resolve this." He revealed they had written twice to Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias, who advised them to settle the matter internally. "But this has affected athlete training and threatens the future of athletics in the state," Muthu said. "We're left with no choice."

Thousands flock to pay discounted traffic summonses at unity week
BATU KAWAN: The atmosphere at the Batu Kawan Stadium compound remained lively today as crowds continued to gather ahead of the closing ceremony of National Unity Week (SMP) 2025, with thousands taking the opportunity to settle their traffic summonses at a discount of up to 50 per cent, offered by the police. A Bernama survey found that the special counter for paying fines, which was opened last Thursday, received visitors not only from Penang, but also from neighbouring states such as Kedah and Perak. An employee of a private transport company in Seberang Jaya, Teh Wong Wei, 34, said his company took the chance to settle outstanding summonses due to the attractive discounts available for various traffic offences. "Most of the offences involved speeding in several states along the North-South Expressway (Plus), with total fines amounting to nearly RM5,000. "After learning about the 50 per cent discount, my employer instructed me to make the payments yesterday. "However, I couldn't make it in time, so I came it seems many others had the same idea," he said. For Natasha Amira Nazri, 32, the 50 per cent summons discount is a people-friendly initiative that provides real relief in settling outstanding summonses at a lower cost, viewing it as a valuable opportunity for all road users. "My husband and I have more than three summonses for various traffic offences, and when there is an opportunity for a discount offer like this to pay at a discount, we take it. "It helps us save money," said the mother of two, who resides in George Town, near here. Meanwhile, a police spokesman said the discount initiative is part of an effort to bring the police closer to the community, while offering the public a convenient way to resolve unpaid summonses. "Many took advantage of this opportunity. Not only does it help ease their financial burden, but it also reflects their commitment to abiding by the law," he said. He said that as of 5pm yesterday, police had collected RM675,000 in summons payments since opening 10 counters last Thursday. A total of 45 police personnel, including staff from the Penang police contingent, were deployed for the four-day operation of the physical payment counters, which ran from 9am to 5pm daily. In addition to in-person services, payments could also be made online via the MyBayar PDRM portal in conjunction with National Unity Week (SMP) 2025. The 50 per cent discount is given to all types of traffic offences, except accident-related summonses, non-compoundable offences, Op Selamat cases, court proceedings, dangerous overtaking or 'queue-cutting' offences, misuse of emergency lanes, running red lights, illegal vehicle exhaust modifications, and overtaking on double lines. Apart from police summonses, the public also took the opportunity to settle summonses issued by the Road Transport Department (RTD) as well as discounted compounds offered by the Penang City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP). Over 40 major activities were held throughout SMP 2025, including 22 Rumah Kita ethnic house exhibitions, a Kadazan Dusun and Orang Asli Ethnic Village showcase, the Foodunites culinary fair, the Time Travel Exhibition, Malaysia Tanah Airku Exhibition, traditional sports, Unity Entrepreneur Sale, Boria Competition, ethnic costume and dance contests, a book festival, and various cultural performances. According to the Ministry of National Unity, over 250,000 visitors from diverse backgrounds, religions, and cultures attended SMP 2025, reinforcing its role as a premier platform for fostering national unity among Malaysians. – Bernama
