Venice is getting two brand-new art centres in May – here's where to find them

Time Out30-04-2025

Milan's Brera Modern finally opened its doors at the end of 2024 (after over 50 years in the making), but it's far from the only Italian city to be graced with a stunning new arts space. In fact, Venice has been graced with two.
The Floating City already has a long list of impressive museums and galleries – the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Venice Glass Museum, to name a few – and joining that collection is San Marco Art Centre and the Nicoleeta Fiorucci Foundation.
San Marco Art Centre will be perched on the second floor of the Procuratie in St Mark's Square. The space will have a broad focus on everything from art and fashion to architecture, film and technology.
Inside, there will be 16 galleries, all recently restored by esteemed British architect David Chipperfield. Two inaugural shows will coincide with the Venice Architecture Biennale (which runs from May 10-November 23), on Harry Seidler, an Australian architect, and Jung Youngsun, a Korean landscape designer.
Founders David Hrankovik, Anna Bursaud and David Gramazio describe themselves as 'a spontaneous and experimental organisation, testing traditional models of arts and institutions and exhibition making,' according to The Art Newspaper.
Sounds pretty swish, right? The San Marco Art Centre will open its doors on May 9, and the inaugural exhibitions are on from then until July 13 – there's more information on the SMAC website here.
Next up is the Nicoleeta Fiorucci Foundation, a London-based non-profit organisation founded in 2021 and named after the renowned Italian-born arts patron.
It's taken over a historic building in Venice's Dorsoduro district, which used to be owned by famous painter Ettore Tito back in the '20s, and launches on May 7 with a site-specific installation by Tolia Astakhishivili, a Georgian artist.
This will run until November 23, and also features work by Thea Djordjadze and Zurab Astakhishvili. The foundation aims to fund the renovation and operational costs of the building – there's more information on it here.

Home and Away Tug star hasn't aged a day three decades later with lookalike son

Home and Away actor Tristan Bancks is best known for his role as Tug O'Neale on the popular Australian soap and, since leaving the show, has landed a string of impressive roles From its debut in 1989, Home and Away became a must-watch for soap fans With its gripping plotlines and the beautiful backdrop of Summer Bay, it's no wonder audiences continue to enjoy the Aussie soap after more than three decades. Over its impressive 36-year run, Home and Away has seen a host of stars grace its screens, including Tristan Bancks, who played the character Tug O'Neale. From 1992 to 1994, Tristan was a regular fixture on the soap, having been chosen from among 200 hopefuls for the role. As Tug, Tristan found himself at the heart of numerous high-profile storylines, tackling issues such as mental health and bullying. However, after two years, he decided to step away from the show to explore new opportunities. After leaving Home and Away, Tristan, now 50, relocated to London for a short time where he secured several presenting roles, including hosting the game show Don't Try This At Home. ‌ ‌ Upon his return to Australia, Tristan resumed his acting career, with roles in the short film Dust and the 2002 feature Beneath Clouds. He has also ventured into directing, with his short comedy Soar being showcased at both the London Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival, reports OK!. Tristan seemingly remains ever-youthful, and has carved out a successful career as an award-winning author, penning popular children's and young adult books such as Two Wolves, The Fall, and Detention. His latest work, Scar Town, hit the shelves recently, with Tristan attending a flurry of book launch events. With over 5,000 followers on Instagram, the ex-soap star frequently offers glimpses into his life as a writer, sharing moments from writing retreats, literary talks, and book festivals. Beyond his professional achievements, Tristan enjoys a private life with his partner, editorial and wedding photographer Amber Melody. The couple are proud parents to two sons and although he keeps much of his personal life under wraps, Tristan occasionally shares heartfelt posts about his family on Instagram. He posed with one of his sons for a picture on Instagram in September last year, saying: "First Father's Day with my eldest son living away in Melbourne. Missed him a lot but he's doing great things. And I did get to have lunch with my youngest son and his girlfriend and my mum and her husband. And my beautiful wife who I've been lucky enough to bring up our two fine boys with. Also, Lego!" ‌ And one Valentine's Day, he shared an affectionate post for Amber, referring to her as the "love of my life". His Instagram caption read: "Happy V Day to the love of my life, Amber Melody. [man and woman in love emoji] Great start to the day with brownie pain au chocolate and croissant French toast (breakfast of champions) at @bambam_bakehouse. :)." ‌ In another heartwarming post, Tristan uploaded a photo with his sons during a magical trip to Disneyland Paris, expressing that travelling with his family is his "favourite thing to do." His books have won and been shortlisted for many awards, including a Children's Book Council of Australia Honour Book, the Prime Minister's Literary Awards, and the YABBA children's choice book awards. Scar Town was named the Children's Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year for Younger Readers. But his talents don't stop there, as Tristan's website reports that "he is currently working with producers to develop a number of his books for the stage and screen."

Jeff Bezos seals 72-hour £40m Venice wedding celebrations with a kiss from bride

Amazon retail giant Jeff Bezos sent the world into a spin as the good and the great of Hollywood and the music industry attended his hugely anticipated wedding celebration Their wedding has been the talk of the town for months as fans eagerly awaited the lavish ceremony of Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez. And the couple did not fail to disappoint. The couple took three days out of their busy schedule to celebrate their wedding, which is believed to have cost close to £40million. ‌ The last day of their wedding party, fans were greeted by Lauren, who now goes by the name of Mrs Bezos, in a flattering pink dress which was embellished with jewels. Both Lauren and Jeff were seen waving to the crowd that gathered outside their Aman Venice Hotel as they stepped into a boat to take them to a secret location to continue their party, surrounded by the elite of Hollywood. ‌ With her hair gently draped around her shoulders, Lauren looked the picture of happiness as she stood close to her new husband. Meanwhile, Jeff was seen dressed in all black. The businessman, 61, who is the third richest man in the world with an estimated worth of £177billion. was pictured in a black shirt teamed with a matching suit. He completed his look with a pair of sunglasses as they made their way along the Venice canal. The happy couple shared a kiss which sent fans wild, sealing their three day nuptials. And their guests also left fans in awe as the elite of Hollywood and the music industry gathered together for three days to witness the wedding of Lauren and Jeff. ‌ Guests included Oprah Winfrey, who looked stunning in a burnt orange outfit that came complete with feathered sleeves. With a fan in hand to stave off the Venice heat, the TV star who is also believed to be a billionaire, waved to fans as she jumped into the awaiting water taxi to take her to the party venue. Other guests included Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Kim and Khloe Kardashian and Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, who were also pictured making their way to the old shipyard, the Arsenale. ‌ Kim was seen dressed to impress in a shimmering black fitted dress that showed off all her curves, while Khloe cut a more demure appearance in a flattering pink outfit. According to reports, the invited guests amounted to 200 people and Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga were among the performers of the night. ‌ And while the happy couple and their guests enjoyed the celebrations which went without a hitch, it seems not everybody was pleased that the retail giant had booked out the entire Italian city. An estimated 700 demonstrators gathered together at Santa Lucia train station armed with banners that read "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax." The demonstration is believed to have been organised by the No Space For Bezos group. A few members of the group were seen laden with Amazon boxes that had the words "ordered, shipped, delivered, rejected" written on them. But this did not seem to change the happy course of the couple as they continued to enjoy their day despite the interruptions. This is reportedly the second marriage for both Jeff and Lauren and between them, they have seven children.
