Makati Business Club, PCCI laud retention of economic team
At a press conference, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced that the President, 'after careful evaluation,' decided to retain Trade Secretary Cristina Roque, Finance Secretary Ralph Recto, Economy Planning and Development Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, and Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick Go.
The announcement came a day after Marcos' call for his Cabinet secretaries to submit their courtesy resignations as the results of Eleksyon 2025 showed that the people are "tired of politics and they are disappointed with the government.'
Members of the President's economic team have immediately complied with his call.
'The Makati Business Club is relieved and satisfied that the Cabinet Secretaries in the Economic Cluster have been retained. This strengthens the continuity and stability of economic policies and initiatives,' MBC executive director Rafael 'Apa' Ongpin said in a statement.
'The private sector has had productive and encouraging engagements with the departments in the Economic Cluster that have demonstrated the open and collaborative character of this administration. We are glad that these relationships will continue,' Ongpin said.
The MBC earlier backed the retention of the economic team, describing them as 'the best people for the job' and 'are well qualified for the position.'
PCCI, for its part, said, 'We welcome the retention of the members of the economic team of President Bongbong Marcos.'
'They have been instrumental in the continued growth of the economy despite global economic whirlwinds. Their retention signals commitment to the continuity of reforms and stability in governance, and boosts confidence in the administration,' the business group said.
PCCI also backed the Cabinet overhaul as it called for 'accountable and merit-based appointments' as well as the retention of 'those who delivered and performed.'
Meanwhile, PCCI expressed support for Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla, who will be transferred to head the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
'With respect to Secretary Popo Lotilla, he has proven his competence and integrity as head of the Department of Energy (DOE). His stint at the DOE was characterized by his commitment to accelerate the transition to clean energy while still ensuring security and affordability of electric power - the two critical components to industrial growth and economic development,' the group said.
'We are optimistic he will bring the same balanced perspective and pragmatic approach that considers both environmental and industrial perspectives, at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR),' it added.
Bersamin said that the DOE will be temporarily headed by Undersecretary Sharon Garin as officer-in-charge. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Globe reaffirms push for GIDA inclusive development
Telecommunications firm Globe said it will continue to support President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s call to bring inclusive development to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs). 'We share the President's vision to create a future where every Filipino can participate in the digital economy,' said Carl Cruz, Globe president and CEO. 'We've seen firsthand how critical it is to connect even the most remote communities. It's not just about putting up cell sites. It's about giving people a fair shot at education, healthcare, safety, and livelihood,' he added. In his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. spoke of the continued challenges in remote areas where internet access, reliable electricity, and public services remain out of reach. He vowed that that all public schools in the Philippines will have internet access before the end of 2025, as part of his administration's aggressive push to modernize education and bridge the country's digital divide. He said that around 12,000 public schools are still without internet and while free WiFi sites have grown to nearly 19,000 nationwide, it is still far from enough. The President also emphasized the need to strengthen the National Fiber Backbone initiative and provide real access for people in the farthest corners of the country. Various efforts from the telco sector to expand internet availability and affordability are gaining ground as the price of internet services continue to go down on a cost per GB basis and internet access is increasing, However, the country continues to face challenges in access and infrastructure especially in remote areas. 'Clearly there are still gaps that we need to address,' said Cruz. 'User density per site needs to improve so that quality of service will also improve.' Globe pointed out that the sector's ongoing work with the government to roll out the Bayanihan SIM is a clear path to solving portions of the digital divide. 'This is one area where government assistance is put to bear. By working together, we're able to get connectivity tools directly into the hands of those who need them most, especially in public schools and disadvantaged communities,' Cruz said. The Bayanihan SIM initiative, launched in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), provides SIM cards preloaded with 25GB of free monthly data. With the entire telco industry onboard, the program aims to benefit a million individuals nationwide. Globe's pilot rollout was held at Kalawakan Elementary School in Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan, where students, teachers, and parents in a GIDA community received free SIMs with ready-to-use data. This initiative complements Globe's broader infrastructure efforts to reach more GIDAs and expand access where it's needed most. In 2024, Globe also deployed 51 solar-powered cell sites in off-grid areas where power lines have yet to arrive. These new sites are now delivering mobile service to places that had long been disconnected, supporting daily learning, communication, and access to public services. To accelerate rollout in GIDAs, Globe works closely with local governments to streamline permitting and gain community support. Through its partnership with DICT, the company has also activated free public WiFi in libraries and schools in underserved municipalities. It has also distributed LTE pocket WiFi devices, SIMs with free data, and Globe At Home Prepaid WiFi kits in schools with limited access to digital tools. In addition, its KonekTayo WiFi service brings affordable, load-based internet to low-income households in remote communities. These initiatives align with the government's efforts to modernize education, strengthen disaster preparedness, expand e-governance, and bring digital inclusion to every region. Bersamin, Estrella, Angara to serve as caretakers as Marcos flies to India
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said Monday morning that he and two other Cabinet officials will serve as caretakers amid President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s state visit to India. Bersamin said the other caretakers are Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrad Estrella III and Education Secretary Sonny Angara. Marcos is expected to leave the country Monday morning. In a press briefing last Friday, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq said Marcos' visit would elevate the countries' shared priorities in defense and maritime cooperation, trade and investment, science and technology, and cultural exchange. Jimenez-Ducrocq also confirmed that several bilateral agreements are lined up for signing. These agreements span cooperation in law, culture, science, and technology, among other fields. The President will also have a meet and greet with the Filipino community in New Delhi. After New Delhi, the President and his delegation will go to Bangalore, which according to the DFA official, is India's Silicon Valley. Marcos will have a series of business meetings there. Marcos forms task force for PH hosting of FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup 2025
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the creation of an Inter-Agency Task Force that will lead the country's preparation for hosting the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup (FFWWC) 2025. The Philippines is set to host the FFWWC for the first time from Nov. 21 to Dec. 7, where Pasig City and Victorias City in Negros Occidental will serve as host venues for the 16 top women's national teams. Signed on July 30 by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Administrative Order (AO) No. 35 stated that the task force will serve as the central coordinating body for concerned government agencies, local government units (LGUs), and private units in planning, organizing, and executing the international futsal tournament. Marcos directed the Philippine Sports Commission to be the chair and secretariat of the task force, while the Department of the Interior and Local Government will serve as the vice chair. Meanwhile, the following are among the agencies tasked to be members of the task force: the Department of Tourism, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Finance, Department of Budget and Management, Department of Health, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation, Presidential Communications Office, the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Immigration, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority. The task force is directed to plan, implement, and procure materials for the tournament. It is also tasked with coordinating plans and activities and forming an executive committee, if needed, to oversee operations. The task force is authorized to accept donations, contributions, grants, and gifts from domestic and international sources, in accordance with existing laws and regulations. All national government agencies, state universities and colleges, and government-owned and -controlled corporations (GOCCs) are directed to provide support and assistance to the task force. Meanwhile, LGUs and private sector partners are urged to support the initiative. The funds for the implementation of the event will come from the available budgets of the concerned agencies, following existing financial laws and regulations. 'The hosting of the FFWWC 2025 aims to advance the development of futsal in the country, inspire greater sports engagement among Filipinos, elevate the Philippines' standing in the international sports arena, and generate economic and tourism opportunities through a globally recognized event,' the AO read. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/KG, GMA Integrated News
