Kozhikode: A controversy has erupted over the interruption of a student meeting organized by
Wisdom Islamic Organisation
(WIO), aimed at addressing various issues including
substance abuse
, after the police claimed the event went past the 10pm limit.
The incident took place at WIO's Kerala Students' Conference held in Perinthalmanna on May 11.WIO general secretary TK Ashraf said that after an unexpectedly large number of students turned up for the meeting, much time was lost in making the necessary arrangements for the same which pushed the event beyond the time limit.
"Since there was a strict instruction to stop by 10pm, we precisely arranged the schedule for the speeches. But the programme extended by about three minutes. By then, the police had been called. We responded respectfully, stating that the closing speech would conclude shortly. However, an officer pushed through the tightly packed crowd of female students, climbed onto the stage and began yelling at the speaker. The time then was 10.06pm and just three minutes were left for the speech to conclude. As soon as this was conveyed, we stopped the programme immediately," Ashraf said. "When law enforcers lose their discretion in handling matters, it drains the very essence of the law," Ashraf added. Ashraf said that it is extremely condemnable that events aimed at protecting the new generation from anarchy and substance abuse are met with intolerance, while programmes where often drugs are consumed go unchecked even past midnight.Meanwhile, IUML national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty condemned the police action and sought to know the govt and police's stance on drug abuse. "What should we understand from the high-handedness shown by the police at the recent anti-drug event held in Perinthalmanna?" he asked.Malappuram DCC president VS Joy said that the high-handedness displayed by Pinarayi Vijayan's police is something this state will not tolerate.

SDPI district secretary booked over unauthorised protest call

The Bantwal Town police on Thursday booked Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Dakshina Kannada district secretary Ashraf Talapady and other district office-bearers for issuing a call for protest on July 4 at B.C. Road, Bantwal, despite the police denying permission. In a statement, the police said the SDPI office bearers submitted a request to Bantwal Town police seeking permission to hold a protest on July 4 in connection with the mob lynching of rag picker Ashraf and the murder of sand transporter Abdul Rahiman. To the police inspector's query on whether the victim's family members or anybody else has submitted a representation regarding non-payment of compensation to the victim's family members, the office bearers said none have submitted a representation. The inspector asked office bearers to provide investigation officers with information about witnesses and evidence related to the two incidents. They were asked to approach the concerned authorities for compensation. Considering the past communal murders in Bantwal and to maintain law and order, permission was denied for the protest. Despite this, SDPI district office bearers posted in 'Breaking News Mykala' WhatsApp group about the protest on July 4 against the delay in the arrest of the main accused in the two cases and for non-payment of compensation. A case was registered against SDPI district office bearers for offences punishable under Section 57, read with Section 189(2) of BNS, the police said.

Zumba Row: Kerala Teacher Suspended For Criticising Govt's Move On Social Media

Last Updated: A teacher from T A M UP School, was suspended for a social media post criticising Zumba, which the Kerala Education Department introduced in schools for an anti-drug campaign. A teacher from T A M UP School in Edathanattukara, T K Ashraf, has been suspended following a social media post criticising the Zumba dance. He was suspended by the school management pending an inquiry. Following strong intervention by the Department of Education, the school took action and suspended the teacher. A meeting was held at the school on Thursday to decide on the next steps. The school manager confirmed that a copy of the suspension order has been sent to the Education Department. The controversy started when T K Ashraf shared a post on social media criticising Zumba dance. As the issue sparked public debate, the Department of General Education issued a notice to the school manager through the Deputy Director of Education, Palakkad, seeking action within 24 hours. The management requested three days to respond, but the department did not grant the extension. Subsequently, the suspension order was handed over on Thursday morning. The Kerala education department introduced Zumba in schools as part of its anti-drug campaign, and some Muslim outfits have objected to the decision. The move is facing backlash as some religious groups objected to girls and boys 'intermingling" and 'dancing together wearing minimal clothes". Many schools in the state have begun offering Zumba training from this academic year. Zumba is a fitness program that involves cardio and Latin-inspired dance. However, Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty defended the move and also shared a video on Facebook showing the participation of Muslim students in a Zumba session.'Let the children play, laugh, have fun, and grow up healthy," Sivankutty said. CPM General Secretary MA Baby called the objections based on misconceptions. He noted that Zumba is done globally and that the students were 'fully clothed". The SNDP has backed the move. Youth Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil and DYFI have also expressed support. First Published: July 03, 2025, 19:15 IST
