Lotteria releases an unadon eel rice bowl burger in Japan for a limited time
On July 16, Lotteria launched a wild, limited-time menu item to mark Doyo no Ushi no Hi, Japan's Midsummer Day of the Ox, on July 17. People traditionally eat eel or 'unagi' on this day for stamina to help combat the hottest period of summer, and Lotteria has taken that tradition to the next level by releasing a burger that contains more than just unagi — it contains unadon.
For those who are new to the dish, unadon, or 'eel rice bowl," is essentially a bowl of rice with a seasoned grilled eel topping. According to Lotteria, their new 'Unadon Burger' contains grilled eel, a 100-percent domestically sourced rice patty, and shredded omelet as the main ingredients, all sandwiched between fluffy, chewy buns.

With the chain describing it as a burger that truly recreates 'unadon', we couldn't resist trying it to see if it really lives up to this claim. So we dashed out to our closest branch of Lotteria, which is actually a Zetteria, and purchased one for 990 yen.
In our eagerness, we arrived early in the morning, so even the staff behind the counter seemed surprised when we requested the Unadon Burger during breakfast hours. However, after taking a seat, our Unadon Burger was ready in less than 10 minutes, and when we unwrapped it for a first look, we could see the eel was so large it looked to be spilling out from the buns.
Lifting the top bun for a closer inspection, we saw there was no sense of stinginess, with mayonnaise and a gooey, sticky teriyaki sauce generously dolloped on top of the well-seasoned eel.
Beneath it all was a rice burger patty acting as the bed of rice in this unusual rice bowl, giving us two layers of carbs on the bottom.
Taking a bite, we silently applauded the rice patty addition, as it worked beautifully to soak up the sauce in each mouthful and spread it throughout the palate in a way that was much more satisfying than a bun on its own. We couldn't deny that the eel was less than a typical beef patty, but in a way that makes it perfect for a hot summer's day.
Each component has been carefully designed to create a harmonious balance between ingredients, and if you're a newcomer to eel, you'll be happy to know that the sauce takes centre stage, covering a lot of the eel's flavor in a way that's evocative of an eel rice bowl. In that sense, the new menu item really does deliver the taste of unadon in burger form, but it's only being made in limited numbers so you'll want to get in quick to try it while stocks are available.

With each new generation the Pokémon franchise moves to a new region, but as fans fondly remember, the adventures all started in the Kanto region, so it's only fitting that the first-ever permanent Pokémon theme park area is going to be in Kanto too. And no, you won't need to find a way to isekai yourself into the Pokémon anime or video games in order to visit. That's because Pokémon's Kanto region shares its name with the real-world Kanto region of Japan, which makes up the eastern part of the country. Poképark Kanto will be located in Tama Hills, which straddles the border of Tokyo and its neighbor to the south, Kanagawa Prefecture. The park, with an area of around 2.6 hectares (nearly 280,000 square feet), will have more than 600 Pokémon, the designers say, split between two habitats: the Pokémon Forest and Sedge Town. In the Pokémon Forest area, fans can amble along a nature trail surrounded by Pokémon great and small. Some will be out in the open, but others will require a keener eye to spot. Meanwhile, Sedge Town promises to be like stepping into a settlement from the games/anime that Pokémon Trainers pass through on their journeys to become full-fledged Pokémon Masters, with amenities such as a Pokémon Center, Poké Mart, and Pokémon Gym. This is also the part of Poképark Kanto Pokémon where Pokémon parades and meet-and-greet events will be held, and the designers say that the Primarina Fountain in the town square will be a place where you can 'connect with Pokémon Trainers and Pokémon alike' for an 'unforgettable experience,' suggesting that there could be some sort of interactive element to what goes on there. ▼ Oh, and apparently there's also going to be an adorable Pikachu flying merry-go-round too, according to this preview illustration. ▼ Poképark Kanto preview video Poképark Kanto will be situated at the edge of the Yomiuri Land amusement park, which previously hosted the limited-time Pokémon Wonder event. The fact that the park's official website also has an English version indicates that the designers are planning to make its activities and events accessible for foreign travelers to Japan as well. It's not currently clear whether admission to Poképark Kanto will be entirely separate from Yomiurui Land or if some sort of combination pass will be offered. Actors Give ‘Oppenheimer' the Noh Treatment in English; Performances to Mark 80th Anniversaries of A-Bombings
The ghost of physicist Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967), who led the development of the U.S. atomic bomb, is the main character of a noh play titled 'Oppenheimer,' which will be performed in English at Kita Noh Theater in the Meguro area of Tokyo, on Aug. 6 and 9. The play will be presented by members of Theater Nohgaku, a group of mainly American performers studying noh. Marking 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it will raise questions about the nuclear threat as a global issue. The play's setting is an old temple in Hiroshima. Speaking to a pilgrim, Oppenheimer's ghost admits his anguish over causing tragedy by making the atomic bombs. As he confesses, the ghost becomes prepared to take upon himself responsibility for the sin of inflicting suffering on mankind. The production is organized by Theater Nohgaku and the Yanai Initiative, a collaboration between Waseda University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The work was written in 2015 and will be performed in Japan for the first time. The music was composed by Theater Nohgaku member Richard Emmert, 75, a professor emeritus at Musashino University. He said it is significant to stage the performances on Aug. 6 and 9, the dates on which the two cities were bombed. John Oglevee, 54, who plays the lead role, said that noh is more of a prayer than a play. He hopes that everyone will remember the tragedy of the atomic bombings. Yanai Initiative Director Michael Emmerich, 49, a professor at Waseda University and UCLA, said that nuclear arms are horrific devices that expose people to radiation at various stages of the weapons' development, manufacture, storage and dismantlement. He believes that having Theater Nohgaku, which brings together people from the United States and other countries, perform 'Oppenheimer' as an English noh play will strongly convey the message that nuclear weapons are a global problem. If bread theft is wrong, then baby, I don't wanna be right. If you have young children in Japan or have walked anywhere within eyeshot of a bookstore, you'll likely recognize the Bread Thief ( Pan Dorobo ). This is a series of children's books in which what appears to be a mouse disguised as a loaf of bread steals bread from bakeries around the world. It's a charming series that manages to pull off the very difficult task of making theft a fun and heartwarming topic for little kids to read about, so much so that it has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and is now celebrating its 5th anniversary with a big festival in the Ebisu neighborhood of Tokyo's Shibuya Ward. Then there's another area of spots for photo ops, followed by the ultimate photo op and a chance to meet the Bread Thief live in the felt! That's not all there is to enjoy at the Bread Thief 5th Anniversary Festival though. At five times on 16 and 17 August, author Keiko Shibata will do a live reading and Q&A with special appearances by the Bread Thief and Fake Bread Thief. And of course, it wouldn't be a Bread Thief celebration without a full range of merchandise for sale.
