
NoRKA-Roots organises campaign to create awareness on various ID cards for expats from Kerala
The campaign period can also be utilised to clear doubts for those who have taken ID cards and to renew the cards for those who have delayed renewal. The various ID cards are helpful for the government in locating expatriate Keralites around the world and intervening in times of need.
Non-residents between the ages of 18 and 70 who are working or residing abroad for more than six months will get a Pravasi ID card and Norka Pravasi Raksha Insurance (NPRI) services. Those who have completed the admission procedures for studying abroad and those who are currently studying abroad will get a Student ID card. NRK ID card will be available to NRIs who have been living or working in other States of India for two years.
The ID cards are valid for three years and Norka Pravasi Raksha Insurance for one year. Insurance cover of ₹5 lakh for accidental death and ₹2 lakh for disabilities will be provided. Norka Pravasi ID card can be used as one of the sponsor's identity documents for admission to NRI seats. Applications for all the ID cards and services can be made through the official website of Norka Roots www.norkaroots.kerala.gov.in.

21 destitute patients shifted from MCH to Gandhi Bhavan shelter
T'puram: In a major rehabilitation initiative, 21 destitute and abandoned patients who were stranded for months at Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital were shifted to Gandhi Bhavan shelter in Pathanapuram under the leadership of social justice minister R Bindu. The relocation, carried out under the social justice department's Vayoraksha (Elderly Protection) scheme, involved the coordinated use of multiple ambulances. Among those relocated were 17 men and 4 women, most of whom are bedridden. Several of them are non-Keralites and many do not even remember their own names or native places. Moved by the emotional farewell, hospital staff who cared for them for months gathered with teary eyes as the patients thanked them for the food, clothes and shelter provided when even their families abandoned them. The minister commended the compassionate work of the hospital staff during the send-off. The social justice department is preparing to launch a new scheme titled Vayosanthwanam, aimed at rehabilitating elderly, bedridden individuals without caretakers, in collaboration with experienced voluntary organizations. In recent years, many similar cases were taken in by institutions under Orphanage Control Board (OCB), with Gandhi Bhavan having accommodated the most. Gandhi Bhavan secretary Punalur Somarajan confirmed that a dedicated ward and medical team are now in place to provide the best possible care for the relocated residents.

M. Anirudhan, founding president of FOKANA, passes away
M. Anirudhan, founding president of the Federation of the Kerala Associations in North America (FOKANA) and prominent businessman has passed away. A three-time president of FOKANA, Mr. Anirudhan was also on the board of directors of NoRKA-Roots. Hailing from Oachira, Mr. Anirudhan arrived in the U.S. in 1973 for pursuing research in chemistry. He had obtained his postgraduate degree from S.N. College, Kollam. He was noted for his contributions in the area of nutrition. In a condolence message, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described him as the unofficial Ambassador of Malayalees in the US.
