Azam: MyKiosk project probe focuses on governance issues rather than criminal wrongdoing

New Straits Times12 hours ago
KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has opened an investigation file into the MyKiosk project, focusing on governance issues rather than any criminal wrongdoing.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said preliminary investigations found no elements of crime, but the commission was looking into issues of administrative and procedural governance.
"We have opened an investigation file, but as of now, there are no indications of any criminal offence.
"The focus of the probe is on governance — a form of oversight known as a governance investigation," he said after witnessing the handover of duties from outgoing Kelantan MACC director Rosli Husain to Azmin Yusoff here today.
Azam clarified that recent media reports suggesting a criminal investigation were inaccurate and stemmed from a misunderstanding.
"Some media outlets may have misinterpreted it. This is not a criminal case at this point.
"Our preliminary probe did not reveal any criminal element. We are assessing whether there are weaknesses in governance that need to be addressed," he said.
He added that the investigation aimed to provide recommendations to the Housing and Local Government Ministry to improve the system, should any gap be identified.
He said the investigation was prompted by a report lodged by MCA Youth and supported by information obtained directly from the ministry.
"The ministry has extended its full cooperation in this matter.
"Among the concerns raised were those related to the tender process and pricing. We are verifying whether those claims are accurate," Azam said.

Fighting graft in public service, one cash reward at a time

KOTA KINABALU: Civil servants in Sabah who blow the whistle on corruption and help bring offenders to justice can walk away with cash rewards matching the bribe amount reported. Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Datuk Karunanithy Y. Subbiah said the initiative aligns with state policy since 2011 to boost integrity and courage within the public service. 'If a civil servant reports a corruption case, whether a bribe was offered or received, and it leads to prosecution, the case will be reviewed by a state committee to determine the reward amount,' he said after attending an integrity seminar for public sector personnel yesterday. 'The reward is usually on a ringgit-for-ringgit basis. For example, if a civil servant is offered RM10,000 and reports it, then the same amount would be recommended as the reward.' He added that this committee is chaired by him, alongside representatives from the National Audit Department and the Sabah Civil Service Department. For small bribe offers as low as RM100, the minimum reward considered is RM500, he said. Beyond cash, whistleblowers also receive an official certificate of appreciation as a token of recognition for upholding integrity in the public sector. However, Karunanithy stressed that the scheme only applies to civil servants who are offered bribes and formally report them to the MACC, not those acting as public whistleblowers. In 2023 alone, RM54,850 in rewards was disbursed to civil servants in Sabah. Out of that, RM52,850 went to police personnel and RM2,000 to immigration personnel, said Karunanithy.

Tei's lawyer lambasted for questioning Chief Minister's report

Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Mazlan (left) said Tei's (right) action in holding a press conference immediately after being charged in court and implicating the Chief Minister and enforcement agencies such as the MACC and the Attorney General's Chambers reeked of political intent. Kota Kinabalu: Mazlan Joehari Manan, Special Officer to the Chief Minister, lambasted the lawyer representing businessman Albert Tei for questioning the action of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to lodge a police report against him (Albert) for possible criminal libel that involves jail sentence rather than merely sue for damages. Mazlan, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Lumadan Division chief, said the lawyer's remarks that it is a calculated attempt to mislead the public and distort the true intent behind the legal action taken against his client were provocative, irresponsible and arrogant. Advertisement He said the lawyer was trying to create the perception that Hajiji was using political power to intimidate opponents, when lodging a report is in line with legal principles that allow any individual to take action when defamed. 'This is not about personal vengeance or political rivalry. This is about defending the truth and the dignity of the Chief Minister's office. 'When someone makes defamatory public remarks, it is only right that legal action be taken,' Mazlan said in a statement on Thursday. Albert's counsel Mahajoth Singh said that Hajiji should have filed a civil suit against Tei instead of lodging a police report. Mazlan stressed that calling a police report an abuse of public resources was a shallow and dismissive view of the nation's justice institutions. 'If such remarks go unchallenged, it could foster an unhealthy culture where individuals facing prosecution hide behind freedom of speech rhetoric to avoid legal accountability.' Mazlan said Tei's action in holding a press conference immediately after being charged in court and implicating the Chief Minister and enforcement agencies such as the MACC and the Attorney General's Chambers reeked of political intent. 'He appears to want to drag everyone through the mud just because he was charged. That's not the behaviour of someone seeking the truth, but someone trying to protect himself through public perception,' he said. 'If the client is innocent, prove it in court. Don't muddy the legal process with politically charged statements,' Mazlan said. He cautioned people not to fall into the trap of perception politics but continue placing trust in the legal institutions to carry out their duties independently and fairly. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
