And, while a college degree can still give you a competitive edge, you don't want to sleep on the fact that many employers are prioritizing skills over college degrees to fill some of their most in-demand jobs. In order for you to stay relevant and compete in the 2025 job market and beyond, you'll want to beef up your skill development starting with some of the fastest-growing skills in the workplace. LinkedIn has published its list of the 15 fastest-growing skills that professionals need to invest in and develop. Feel free to explore LinkedIn's full listing. I'm highlighting seven (7) skills from the list that I often hear about in my work with hiring managers, supervisors and executives. AI Literacy Conflict Mitigation Adaptability Process Optimization Innovative Thinking Solution-Based Selling Budget & Resource Management There is a huge skills gap between what AI can do and what most employees think it can do. Getting employees up to speed with AI—its capabilities and business value—is a challenge that many organizations are experiencing. The University of Maryland is one institution that has stepped up to fill the AI skills gap. Notably, the college offers a completely free online course in artificial intelligence (AI) and career empowerment for mid-career professionals. The certificate program is for building AI skills. It is self-paced learning and specifically tailored to professionals seeking to transition into the private sector or those seeking a career shift. Conflict is a normal and healthy part of human interactions and dynamics. But a discomfort with it and a lack of skill for how to address and mitigate it undermines—or sabotages—communication, team performance and leadership success. Employees, leaders and managers with highly developed conflict mitigation skills are better equipped to respond in disharmonious environments. These professionals are better equipped to advance organizational strategic priorities because they lean into—rather than run away from—difficult conversations, divergent perspectives and healthy debate. They create high-performing teams who understand that conflict is normal as opposed to being intrinsically bad. 3. Adaptability Adapt or die. Many of us have heard this old adage referring to the importance of remaining agile and open to change. Adjusting as necessary to changing circumstances is a critical leadership skill. For organizations to not only survive but thrive in an uncertain and rapidly changing world, adaptability is key. 4. Process Optimization Leaders who improve processes trump those who simply solve problems because the big things that executives and leaders need to accomplish involve creating, improving or managing systems and processes—not just solving isolated problems. Process optimization is a skill that moves you beyond doing things to assessing and evaluating how you do the things you do. When you are optimizing processes, you will ask questions like: Are we doing the right things in the right way? What is our process, who owns it, and how can it be improved? Have we clearly mapped our processes and communicated this mapping with others with a need to know? With process optimization, there is a strong focus on being proactive and seeking out opportunities to improve operations, affect change and influence strategic outcomes. The inclination of those operating from this skillset is to evaluate the interrelationships and interconnections within and between steps, processes, systems and people. 5. Innovative Thinking Today's high-performing organizations are those that recruit and retain strategists, creative thinkers and innovators who embrace the eight essentials of innovation as defined by McKinsey & Company. Those with innovative thinking skills are primed to promote a culture of diverse thinking where new and different ideas are elicited. These leaders will get the best out of their employees and teams because instead of stifle new ideas and different perspectives, they invite them. 6. Solution-Based Selling Too many run away from the word selling, but we're all selling something to someone at some point. It doesn't matter whether you are specifically identified as a 'salesperson.' If you have a role within the organization, you have a responsibility to be solution oriented, and this often involves persuading or convincing someone to do something different. You have a responsibility to deliver customized value and define solutions that solve specific problems for internal and external customers and stakeholders. This requires skill, and the best leaders use this skill to create and deliver value. To do this well, you must understand your customers and stakeholders—value them, listen to them, and drill down on their perspectives to understand how they experience your services, products, representatives, etc. 7. Budget & Resource Management People with budget and resource management skills can climb higher on the career ladder. Finance management is a leadership imperative just like making effective decisions, creating great work environments and demonstrating strategic thinking. If you ever want to progress up the career ladder within your organization to where you are the one trusted to lead large projects, manage dynamic teams, make critical resource allocation decisions or have a meaningful say in strategy, you need to develop this skill. An Example of an Employer Prioritizing Skills Again, we're in a skills-based economy, and many employers are prioritizing skills over college degrees. How do you plan to develop these skills so that you can remain competitive? I recently wrote about how to get hired at Deloitte and explored insider tips from the company's chief talent officer, David Rizzo, about what skills he looks for in employees. Of the many things Rizzo looks for in employees, he emphasized the following: The right kind of technical and behavioral skills—use skills to communicate what you do and how effectively you deliver organizational and team results. How you communicate your experiences—use skills to demonstrate your ability to adapt to a changing environment, solve complex challenges and deliver results. A good fit between the job candidate and the company culture, team and values—use skills to demonstrate intellectual and organizational curiosity and channel it in a team and purpose-driven manner. Take Action Now to Build Your Skills and Stay Relevant After spending decades working with employees at all levels and after recruiting, supervising and leading employees and teams, it's clear to me what skills set one employee apart from another. The best performers and leaders demonstrate a variety of skills that go far beyond box-checking this credential or that credential. In this blog, I will share overlooked yet practical marketing tips and strategies. Whether you are a solo entrepreneur or part of a small team, these ideas can help you build a strong presence and grow smartly. Most brands believe they need to be everywhere Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and so on. Diversification among many different things would result in poor content. My marketing advice is that you identify where your audience can be found most and pitch there. Sprout Social found that 68% of marketers reported that their ability to focus their channels resulted in increased engagement and conversions. It is among such marketing tips that sound too easy, yet it works when done well. The prerequisite to a successful marketing strategy is a solid understanding of the platform, coupled with humor. Rather than chasing all the trends, invest time in trying to understand what type of posts your audience is mostly engaging with. Then compound that. A lot of producers attempt to go viral. However, trust is not always associated with virality. Stop aiming to attract more people, but rather consider how you can make your audience solve small problems. Just provide them with straightforward answers. Enable them to be able to know what it is that you do and how you can assist. Individuals do not purchase products from companies they do not trust. The Edelman Trust Barometer shows that 81% of consumers must trust the brand to purchase it. This entails being truthful in what you say, demonstrating your work, and not overselling. This is not a step that will bear results overnight. Loyalty is built in the long run, however. And more than going viral, loyal customers pay better. Content marketing is not new. But it remains one of the most effective tools when used with clarity and purpose. That means you don't just create content to post. If you build your email list with care, it becomes a direct connection with your audience. Social media can limit your reach. But email goes straight to their inbox, and they own the decision to open it. Go to the human side of your business even when you have a business. Share your experience. Take your team to see it. Make people understand what they are dealing with. This is among the most underestimated marketing opinions, which does not go unnoticed. Also, people trust individual recommendations, even when they are not known, as opposed to brands. Make this to benefit you via personal connections. Post pictures behind the scenes. Bring your values into the spotlight. Speak as a person, not as an organization. It also does not imply that you convert your brand to a personal blog. It simply implies being down-to-earth and genuine. The minor details show that your brand is accessible. Information is valuable. However, at some point, overthinking may work against you. Thoughtful marketing involves treasured wisdom along with the sixth sense. When it feels right and you have some minor indications towards success, then it is worth a test. As an example, you may realize that your posts with images attract more clicks in comparison with videos, so you can test it once again. In January, Warkentin became president of Staples' US retail operations. One of his first big moves as the top executive: launching a new campaign around the familiar fat red button, with billboards, store signs, and social media posts. (The button shows up as 'E.B.' on LinkedIn.) And yes, you can still buy buttons that say 'that was easy' for your office cubicle. The Easy Button concept is in keeping with Staples founder Tom Stemberg 's ethos around making life easier for customers, Warkentin says. Advertisement 'It wasn't just a marketing campaign,' Warkentin said. 'It was a commitment.' The idea takes on new resonance now that the company has pivoted to focus more on services and less on traditional brick-and-mortar retail, particularly as consumers and small businesses are using less paper, once the lifeblood of a Staples store. In that regard, Warkentin cited several growth areas such as same-day sign printing, TSA Precheck enrollment, tech support, and 'iPostal' digital mailboxes. Warkentin said he doesn't expect to significantly add to the company's network of 900-plus stores in the United States, but he does want to optimize the stores Staples already has. Advertisement 'What you hopefully are seeing is the evolution of a strategy playing out where we're moving more towards a service-based approach versus a product-based approach, which is where the whole 'Easy campaign' comes in,' Warkentin said. 'Leveraging something from the past and applying it to something that's new and more modern.' For Mass. CEOs, competition is on the menu The 'C' word seems to be everywhere you turn these days. Case in point: State Street chief executive Ron O'Hanley and Rapid7 chief executive Corey Thomas are hosting an unusual dinner meeting on Wednesday, and 'competitiveness' is on the menu. The meeting is unusual because O'Hanley and Thomas invited board chairs of local business associations as opposed to the associations' chief executives — other executives whose day jobs involve leading companies, not trade groups. O'Hanley chairs the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership , and is the former chair of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce 's board, a role he handed off to Thomas a year ago. In their invite, they write that the challenges to the state's economic competitiveness have never been greater. They cite headwinds facing leading industries, and existential threats posed to universities and hospitals. They point to high construction and housing costs, as well as taxes. And they express concerns about roads and public transit. Their stated goal: to identify actions that local business leaders can take to address 'what is now a critical situation.' The meeting follows a Pioneer Institute report in April, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data, showing that private sector employment in Massachusetts remains 0.74 percent lower than in January 2020 — the third-worst showing of any state. And on Thursday, the Massachusetts Business Roundtable released a report showing an increasing number of their members are hiring remote workers in other states to fill jobs. Advertisement 'Massachusetts has more going for it than it has challenges,' said Citizens Bank executive Lisa Murray , who plans to attend as chair of the Roundtable. 'We need to make sure we're telling that story, so we're focusing on and highlighting all the amazing things that happen here. . . . But we can't be naive and stick our head in the sand, and not address the issues that are as clear as day.' For Boston Arts Academy, a big check from big fans When Mayor Michelle Wu Josh Boger and Amy Boger to step up. The couple has supported the visual and performing arts high school for several years, ever since they received an inquisitive visit by some academy students to their Summer Street studio. Josh Boger is a scientist by training, and a former chief executive of biotech powerhouse Vertex Pharmaceuticals, while his wife is a retired pediatrician. But now he's much more focused on photography, particularly underwater, and she's more focused on ceramics. Boger said it was a no-brainer for the couple to donate that final $1 million, to make the match sought by the anonymous donor and bring the total amount raised by the Boston Arts Academy Foundation to $35.9 million — wrapping up the campaign. The couple had donated to BAA before, he said, but this is their largest single gift to the school. They were recognized by Wu at a reception at the Parkman House on Friday. (The gift will go to a scholarship fund, to support BAA graduates in college, named after foundation chief executive Denella Clark .) Advertisement He said he's impressed that admissions are not based on middle school grades, but instead on auditions and portfolios. He believes many students who are artistically inclined can go on to become great mathematicians and scientists; the pursuits of arts and of science are more similar than many people realize. He probably gets as much out of the student visits as the kids do — if not more. 'It's the questions they ask, and I realize that they're seeing certain aspects [of my photography] for the first time,' Boger said. 'That makes me more interested in those aspects. . . . It reminds me to look at it more carefully.' Wu sees mounting interest in office conversions Interest continues to build in Mayor Michelle Wu 's tax- That's the message the mayor conveyed at an Associated Industries of Massachusetts meeting on Thursday, after AIM chief executive Brooke Thomson asked what her administration is doing to help address the region's housing shortage. Wu touted her conversion program, which offers developers a 75-percent property tax break over 29 years. She noted projects totaling nearly 800 units are in the pipeline, soon to climb to around 1,000. The hope: bring more life to a downtown hurt by the rise of remote work, while creating more housing. Advertisement Actual construction, though, Wu rattled off several other city housing initiatives, and she fielded a separate question from Thomson about buttressing the city's competitiveness. She indicated that perhaps the most important draw for businesses is 'making sure Boston is a city where employees, where people, want to build their lives.' There was little indication of how some of Wu's more progressive policies — increased requirements for affordable housing, for example, or climate-friendly construction — faces some resistance in the business community. A number of prominent executives have donated to Josh Kraft, her challenger in the fall election. To introduce Wu at the AIM event, M&T Bank regional president Grace Lee talked about how Wu stood her ground before confrontational members of Congress in March, over immigration policies. Wu hearkened back to that moment when Thomson asked about the mayor's controversial rollout of more bike lanes, a rollout that Kraft targeted 'When I was sitting in that congressional hearing room in D.C.,' Wu recalled, 'and the questions were coming fast and furious and trying to, you know, call me names, and this and that, I quickly realized, . . . none of these congressional Republicans have been in a bike lane meeting in the city of Boston.'
