AI teaching assistant shows real promise at S. Korea tech university KAIST

South Korea's top science and engineering university has rolled out a custom-built AI teaching assistant to help students in large graduate courses, and early results show it helped reduce repetitive student questions while encouraging more active, self-directed learning.
At Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, a team of researchers led by AI graduate school professor Choi Yoon-jae and design professor Hong Hwa-jung developed a virtual teaching assistant, or VTA, that can answer student questions at any time, with responses tailored to specific lectures and coursework.
The tool was piloted last fall in a programming class for AI, taken by 477 graduate students. It's the first time such a system has been tested at scale in a Korean university setting.
What sets the KAIST VTA apart is that it isn't a generic chatbot. Instead, it runs on what's called a retrieval-augmented generation model, which pulls directly from course materials like slides, coding exercises and lecture videos. When students ask a question, the system finds the most relevant content and formulates a response based on that context. This means answers are grounded in what's actually taught, not just generated from a general AI model.
Over 50 percent of students used the system regularly during the 14-week semester, generating nearly 3,870 questions and answers. Students without a strong background in AI or coding were among the most active users, suggesting the VTA helped close knowledge gaps for those new to the subject. These figures come from internal usage data collected by KAIST during the semester.
The system didn't just benefit students. According to lead TA and doctoral researcher Kwon Soon-jun, it reduced the number of routine questions from students, such as basic concept definitions or explanations already given in class. That allowed human teaching assistants to focus more on deeper, more complex issues. Compared to the previous year's course, the volume of questions requiring direct responses from TAs dropped by around 40 percent, based on data compiled by Professor Choi.
Students also appeared more comfortable asking questions through the VTA than to human TAs, especially when it came to theoretical topics. Surveys conducted by Choi's research team before, during and after the course showed that students became increasingly confident in the system's reliability, and those who had been hesitant to speak up in class reported higher satisfaction levels when using the AI assistant.
The VTA's source code has been released publicly on GitHub to encourage adoption by other educators and researchers. The work was also accepted to the Industry Track at ACL 2025, one of the leading international conferences in natural language processing

Gartner research shows that organizations deploying retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines for their generative AI applications need access to unstructured data, which constitutes 70% to 90% of the data in organizations today [1]. By 2027, the IT spending focused on multistructured data management will account for 40% of total IT spending on data management technologies and services. [2] To address these challenges, the newsletter proposes that enterprises need to build a Data + AI integrated platform. The key capabilities of such a platform include the composability of data and AI technologies, end-to-end lifecycle development from data to AI and business integration, processing and enhancement of multimodal data, and unified metadata-driven governance and compliance. In addition, the introduction of Agentic Analytics enables intelligent automated decision-making. To reclaim economic dynamism, South Korea must trade patchwork fixes for deregulation South Korea has long prided itself on its technological sophistication, a nation of 5G networks, semiconductor giants and integrated mobile ecosystems. Yet the legal and regulatory machinery governing its economy remains ill-suited to the demands of the industries it claims to champion. A modest but telling countermeasure has been the 'regulatory sandbox,' a policy tool that grants temporary exemptions from outdated laws, allowing innovative companies to test new services or products without being immediately stifled by red tape. Introduced in 2020, the system has yielded tangible, if limited, results. According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 518 firms that participated in the scheme between 2020 and May 2025 created 6,900 jobs and added 980 billion won ($722 million) in revenue. Most were small and medium-sized enterprises, underscoring how heavily rigid rules weigh on those least able to manage them. Yet the sandbox remains the exception, not the norm. Its impact is curbed by slow-moving bureaucracy, narrow scope and weak follow-through. Despite promising signals, successive Korean governments have failed to convert ad hoc relief into systemic reform. The global trend toward deregulation makes South Korea's regulatory stagnation even more conspicuous. Europe, once a champion of corporate oversight, is now retreating from some of its more burdensome interventions. France and Germany have jointly pressed the EU to shelve its proposed Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, citing the competitive strain it would impose. The EU is also reconsidering its approach to AI regulation, increasingly concerned about falling behind the US and China in strategic technologies. Emerging markets are acting just as decisively. Vietnam, for example, aims to cut corporate regulation by 30 percent in pursuit of an 8 percent growth target. South Korea, by contrast, is tightening legal frameworks just as its peers seek flexibility. The cost of this approach is no longer speculative. In the 2025 competitiveness rankings by the International Institute for Management Development, South Korea fell seven places to 27th overall. More strikingly, it dropped 21 places in the 'business efficiency' sub-index, a decline driven by lower productivity, reduced corporate adaptability and mounting internal hurdles. This is a clear warning that the regulatory environment is not merely lagging but actively undermining competitiveness. The drag on emerging industries underscores the risks. Drone logistics, autonomous driving and telemedicine — sectors advancing rapidly elsewhere — remain mired in legal uncertainty at home. The case of Tada, a homegrown ride-hailing platform hit by legislative hurdles, offers a cautionary tale. In South Korea, innovation is often not outpaced by the market but obstructed by the state. One proposal that warrants serious consideration is the 'mega sandbox,' a plan to let local governments establish experimental regulatory zones for high-potential sectors such as urban air mobility or AI. Backed by the KCCI and business leaders, the idea represents a step toward structural reform. But real change will require more than decentralization. It demands political willingness to tolerate risk, loosen central control and embrace a culture of experimentation. President Lee Jae Myung has pledged to eliminate rules born of administrative convenience rather than public need. Yet the country's recent history is littered with unfulfilled promises of reform. Regulation is not inherently counterproductive. Well-crafted rules protect markets, consumers and institutions. But frameworks that persist out of habit do more than hinder efficiency — they dissuade ambition. In a global economy defined by speed, adaptability and innovation, South Korea cannot afford to remain an economy where the space to imagine is narrower than the rules that constrain it. Policy must do more than referee. It must create the space to play.

Tencent resurfaces as potential buyer given its Korean entertainment investments South Korea is moving to offload its 4.7 trillion won ($3.46 billion) stake in NXC Corp., the holding company of game developer Nexon. The Ministry of Economy and Finance opened the sale process earlier this week, putting its shares in NXC up for public bidding, according to industry sources Thursday. NXC is the largest shareholder of Tokyo-listed Nexon Japan and the sole owner of its Korean subsidiary, Nexon Korea. The ministry acquired a roughly 30 percent stake — about 852,000 shares in total — in February 2023 from the family of late Nexon founder Kim Jung-ju as payment for inheritance tax. This marks the government's third attempt to sell the stake, following two failed efforts due to a lack of interested buyers. The asking price includes a 20 percent management control premium, yet any purchaser would still face limited sway over the company, as the founder's family retains a 68 percent majority. The government's earlier insistence on a full block sale also deterred bidders. While it continues to favor a bulk sale, officials say they may consider splitting the stake depending on market conditions. Preliminary bids will be accepted through Aug. 25, according to reports. Industry speculation suggests Chinese tech giant Tencent may be eyeing the stake. Tencent has repeatedly emerged as a potential buyer of Nexon since 2019, when Kim first put Nexon up for sale, though it has never formally joined the bidding process. The company also denied reports in June that it was considering acquiring a stake. Talk of Tencent's interest is driven by its continued expansion into Korea's tech and entertainment sectors. The company is the second-largest shareholder in Kospi-listed game developers Shiftup and Netmarble, with stakes of approximately 34.8 percent and 17.5 percent, respectively. Tencent also holds a 14 percent stake in Krafton and 4 percent in Kakao Games. Its influence extends beyond gaming, with its music subsidiary, Tencent Music, owning 9.7 percent of K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment. Meanwhile, both the ministry and Tencent declined to confirm whether the company is participating in the preliminary bidding.
