Helicopter drops money from sky to honor Detroit man's last wish

Money and rose pedals fell from the sky over Gratiot Avenue near Conner Street in Detroit in honor of Darrell "Plant" Thomas on Friday, June 27.
Thomas passed away on June 15 at 58 years old. His sons Darell and Jonte organized a helicopter to drop $5,000 and rose pedals at 1:27 p.m. over Show Room Shine Express, 1041 Gratiot Avenue, Thomas's niece Crystal Perry, Detroit, said.
"This was a final expression of love from him to the community because he was a giver," Perry said. "Yesterday was simply a farewell tribute to an Eastside legend."

Outside of owning Showroom Shine Express, Thomas was a National Hot Rod Association licensed professional race car driver, as well as a brother, father, grandfather and more, according a recording of his funeral at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Perry said to know her uncle Plant was to love him.
"He would do anything for anybody," Perry said. "He just had a different kind of heart. You don't meet people like that nowadays."

One person was killed and two others were injured when two Jeeps collided on westbound Interstate 94 near Gratiot Avenue in Detroit on Saturday evening, June 28, according to police. At around 7:10 p.m., a silver Jeep in the left lane and a green Jeep in the center lane of I-94 attempted to change lanes at the same time and struck each other, causing the drivers to lose control, according to Michigan State Police Second District in a post on X. The driver of silver Jeep struck the median wall and rolled over, while the other Jeep went off the road and hit a tree on the right embankment of the highway, state police said. A 27-year-old from St. Clair Shores who was a passenger in the Jeep that hit the median wall was killed, according to state police. The driver of that Jeep and another passenger were transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said. The driver and a passenger in the other Jeep were not injured, police said. One person died and two others were injured after two Jeeps collided on westbound I-94 Saturday evening, Michigan State Police said. The crash happened at around 7:10 p.m. Saturday on westbound I-94 near Gratiot Avenue when the driver of a silver Jeep in the left lane and the driver of a green Jeep in the center lane attempted to change lanes at the same time and collided, MSP said. The collision caused the driver of the silver Jeep to strike a median wall and roll over, while the driver of the green Jeep went up the right embankment and struck a tree, police said. A passenger in the silver Jeep, a 27-year-old St. Clair Shores man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger of the silver Jeep were taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries, police said. The driver of the green Jeep, who was the lone occupant, was not injured. The freeway was closed for about four hours for an investigation, according to troopers. "Troopers are continuing the investigation into this crash," said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw. "We want to remind drivers to be careful when changing lanes. Make sure you use your turn signal, check your mirrors and blind spots, and then start to change lanes."
