I started using an eSIM for my summer travels — here's why I'll never go back to a physical SIM card

When I travel abroad, I want to be able to use my smartphone to manage my itinerary, navigate between destinations, and stay connected to those back home. That means I need a data plan that works where I am and that won't break the bank. An eSIM, or embedded SIM, allows me to connect to local cellular networks at an affordable price. An eSIM is a digital SIM card already built into your phone — instead of installing a physical chip into a card slot, you simply purchase an eSIM and activate it remotely via a Wi-Fi connection (or cell network, depending on your device). Nomad eSIM: When you're on the road, you need a data plan that matches your vibe. With its convenience, flexibility and coverage in over 200 destinations, Nomad eSIM is an essential companion for all travelers. Nomad has recently launched 21 new unlimited data plans starting at just $11 for three days. This summer, use the promo code NOMADSUN20 for 20% off. While I can connect to Wi-Fi while traveling, I need to be able to connect to data while out and about without worrying about expensive roaming charges or pay-per-use rates. An eSIM allows me to purchase a data plan for the specific country or region I am traveling to for the duration of my trip at a relatively affordable price. In addition to cost-effective data options, travel eSIMs have some advantages over purchasing a physical SIM card for a local network. When relying on removable SIM cards in the past, I have had to locate a vendor, leaving a gap between arrival and getting connected to a data network. With an eSIM, you can get everything set up in advance so your plan is active the minute you land. I also had to keep my primary SIM secure for the duration of the trip — SIM chips are tiny and easily lost. Even if I wanted to use a physical SIM card, I'd have to purchase a second device in order to do so. My iPhone 15 Pro is eSIM only, meaning it lacks a SIM tray. It's far more convenient to use my own device with both a travel eSIM for affordable data and my primary SIM for receiving calls and texts from home than it is to buy and carry two separate phones. Apple has largely discontinued the use of traditional SIMs in its iPhone lineup (at least for US users), while Android devices typically have dual capabilities with both a physical SIM and an eSIM. Note that your device will need to be carrier unlocked in order to use an eSIM from a different provider. If you are traveling abroad, an eSIM is the simplest and often most cost-effective option for connecting to cellular data with your existing device. A travel eSIM allows you to do everything from use maps to stream video as soon as you arrive at your destination. This Item Can Help You Stay Ahead Of A Home Disaster

According to national statistics from 2023, one in 50 insured homes files a water damage claim each year and the average cost of a water damage claim is $10,000. Water damage isn't only costly; it can also ruin precious personal possessions. Currently, there are no requirements for homes to have any sort of water sensor — which means it's up to you to protect your house from this type of disaster on your own. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be costly. More than 9,000 Amazon shoppers have bought and given a 5-star rating to the Govee Wi-Fi water sensor, which has a starting cost of under $30 — certainly a far cry from the cost of water damage. Plus, you can clip the on-page coupon for a discount applied at checkout. Here's how it works: First, you download the Govee water sensor app. Then, you plug the gateway into an outlet and place the sensors around your house. For example, you may choose to put sensors in the basement, bathrooms, laundry room, under the kitchen sink or in your garage. After the gateway is paired to your Wi-Fi and you're all set up in the app, you're good to go. Any time one of the sensors detects any water, it will sound an alert and a notification will also pop up on your phone as well as in your email. That way, you'll know if a leak occurred even if you aren't home. Here's what else is cool: You'll be able to see through the app which sensor went off so you know where the leak is occurring. Being able to identify a leak as soon as possible (whether it's from heavy rain, a burst pipe or a leaking appliance) means you can take action before your home and belongings are ruined. Especially if you live in an area prone to flooding, having this sensor will allow you to leave town without worrying if your home is okay; you'll be able to monitor it using the app. Still not convinced you need one? Check out these reviews from people who bought the Govee water sensor: Get it from Amazon for $29.99+ (available with one, two, or three sensors).

Square Pie Guys Is Bringing Its Celebrated Detroit-Style Pizzas to the South Bay

is the regional editor for Eater's Northern California/Pacific Northwest sites, writing about restaurant and bar trends, upcoming openings, and pop-ups for the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, Seattle, and Denver. South Bay, get ready: Square Pie Guys is set to launch its most ambitious expansion plan since its 2019 beginnings. As of Tuesday, August 5, Square Pie Guys will open its first official South Bay location in Campbell, with two more locations soon to follow in the upcoming months. Now the mini chain is officially migrating south with its fourth store, located next to the Pruneyard Shopping Center. It's a big move for Square Pie Guys owner Marc Schechter. The business cautiously dipped a toe outside San Francisco and Oakland through a partnership with Local Kitchens, a chain of micro food halls composed of Bay Area restaurants. While that partnership expanded Square Pie Guys' reach through the various Local Kitchens locations, it was never the same as the original. While the quality may have been there, by virtue of sharing space with other restaurants, the menu was admittedly limited, Schechter says. But now Square Pie Guys is on its own, launching not only with a newer, bigger place in Campbell, but also (eventually) a bigger menu. Some of the decor at the new Square Pie Guys. Square Pie Guys The original Square Pie Guys offerings will be at the new shop, including the loaded pepperoni pizza, two mushroom slices, the Big Von with white sauce, Italian sausage, pepperoni, Mike's Hot Honey, and more. Szechuan wings and other flavored wings will also be on offer, as well as some salad options, like the chop salad. But with this new 3,500-square-foot space comes room to play. Schechter has dabbled with adding non-pizza dishes to the menu over the years, some of which were eventually pulled — such as the brief, but popular, Hetchy's Hots hot chicken sandwiches. Longtime customers may remember a short-lived smash burger at the Mission location, and thanks to a flat-top grill, the Square Pie Guys team plans to bring that back in the restaurant's first three months of operation. The hope is to continue that experimentation, with Schechter teasing some 'fun sandwiches' down the line. The other locations began serving lunch in April, adding on a classic Italian combo and a chicken parm sandwich, served on focaccia-like bread made from the pizza dough. Diners can expect items like those to make an appearance down the line. The Campbell location will have Square Pie Guys' first-ever soda machine. Square Pie Guys Along with the flat-top adding a new dimension to the Square Pie Guys offerings, the new location also has more beers on tap than the other shops, plus wine and the mini-chain's first-ever soda machine. There will also be outdoor seating, perfect for the warmer South Bay weather. The expansion is a fitting plan for a restaurant whose original fans are spreading throughout the Bay Area. Schechter says some of their original customers have since moved on from San Francisco during the pandemic, settling in cities just like Campbell. 'Part of [this new Campbell opening] is us wanting to in make sure that we can serve our original fans, or even new fans that we have acquired just by existing in the city,' Schechter says. Square Pie Guys (501 East Campbell Avenue, Campbell) debuts on Tuesday, August 5, and will be open 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
