Thailand thanks regional leaders as ceasefire deal reached with Cambodia
Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said Phumtham emphasised that the special meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold international law, peaceful coexistence, and multilateral cooperation in seeking a fair and sustainable resolution to the situation.
He said that Malaysia, as the current Chair of Asean, would coordinate the establishment of an observer team to monitor and verify compliance with the ceasefire agreement.
"Phumtham noted that the discussions reflected Thailand's determination to pursue a peaceful resolution while safeguarding national sovereignty and the lives of its citizens.
"Both parties agreed to a ceasefire, along with confidence-building measures to ensure its sincere and effective implementation," Jirayu said in a statement issued following the Special Thailand-Cambodia Meeting held in Putrajaya on Monday.
Jirayu said that following the meeting, both sides had agreed to restore direct communication channels between the prime ministers, foreign ministers, and defence ministers of the two countries.
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid escalating tensions along their disputed border, following the special meeting chaired by Anwar today.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Phumtham reaffirmed their commitment to de-escalation, agreeing to an immediate ceasefire and a return to normalcy, effective from 2400 hours (local time) on July 28.
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long-standing history of diplomatic disputes over an 817km undemarcated stretch of their shared border.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been rising since May 28, following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear area, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
The latest round of hostilities erupted on July 24, with armed clashes reported along Cambodia's northern border region, leading to casualties on both sides.

Thai government spokesman Jirayu slams politician for border clash claim, stirring false narrative against acting PM
BANGKOK: Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap hit back at Gen Rangsi Kittiyarnsup, leader of the Economic Party, for claiming that a government representative had ordered troops not to engage in clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border. Jirayu made the remarks on Saturday (Aug 2), following Rangsi's claim that someone from the government had called to instruct troops to avoid confrontation along the border on July 24. He clarified that the matter had been verified with Deputy Defence Minister Gen Natthapon Nakpanich, who is also the director of the Ad Hoc Centre for the Thailand-Cambodia Border Situation, which oversees operations in seven provinces. Natthapon confirmed that no such instruction was ever given and there was no reason for such an order to be issued. 'All security agencies, including the armed forces, have worked as a unified 'Team Thailand' in this historic national mission,' said Natthapon. Jirayu went on to criticise Rangsi's conduct, saying that as the leader of a political party, every statement he makes must take into account the country's stability. 'Even if he was once a soldier, he is now a politician. His words should reflect truth and integrity befitting a military man, not the antics of old-style politicians who stir up rhetoric without regard for national stability,' Jirayu said. 'If he wants to make a splash while launching a political party, this is certainly not the right way.' He also accused Rangsi of distorting Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai's past remarks. The Economic Party leader had cited a comment Phumtham made on May 7, during his tenure as Defence Minister, in which he advised caution to prevent violence. Rangsi reportedly used this out-of-context quote to suggest that Phumtham was a traitor in connection with the Thai-Cambodian clash on July 24, despite the fact that the two incidents were entirely unrelated. 'Today, the border situation is under control. The government, through the military, is now focused on recovery, rehabilitation and maintaining sovereignty and public safety. We are also presenting accurate information to international bodies, including human rights organisations and diplomatic partners,' Jirayu stated. He said this was because the tariff remains competitive compared with other Asean nations, including Indonesia, which also faces the same tariff rate, Bernama reported. 'We're almost on par with the lowest rates in Asean. For example, Indonesia is the world's top producer of palm oil, and we're number two. 'It is also subject to the 19% rate. So for us, 19% is fair. It's not a problem,' he was quoted as saying, after attending the Pasir Gudang Umno delegates' meeting today. Yesterday, the US announced the imposition of a 19% reciprocal tariff on imports from Malaysia, effective Aug 8, a reduction from the previously proposed 25%. In response, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said Malaysia will advocate for 0% tariffs on commodities such as cocoa, rubber and palm oil, similar to the 0% rate enjoyed by the semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors.
