Tigers bolster bullpen at trade deadline, acquiring Kyle Finnegan from Nats and Paul Sewald from Guardians

NBC Sports5 days ago
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers are making moves, hoping to increase their chances of winning a World Series for the first time in more than four decades.
Detroit acquired Kyle Finnegan from Washington for two prospects, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press just hours before the trade deadline on Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't announced.
The 33-year-old Finnegan was an All-Star in 2024, but his velocity has been down this season. He has 20 saves with a 4.38 ERA in 2025.
Detroit added Paul Sewald earlier in the day, giving the rebuilding Cleveland Guardians cash for the right-handed reliever.
The AL Central-leading Tigers won their fourth straight game with newly acquired starting pitcher Chris Paddack on Wednesday, two days after he was added in a trade with the Minnesota Twins.
Detroit has nearly a double-digit game lead in the division and is vying with Toronto and Houston for the best record in the league.
The Tigers, trying to take advantage of ace Tarik Skubal and a balanced lineup, are aiming for their first World Series title since 1984. Detroit earned a spot in the playoffs last year for the first time in the decade after a late-season surge.
In the trade for Finnegan, the Tigers sent minor league pitchers Josh Randall and R.J. Sales, Detroit's third and 10th round draft picks from 2024, respectively, to Washington.
The 35-year-old Sewald is eligible to return from the injured list on Sunday after being shut down with a strained right shoulder, but he isn't expected to pitch until September. He is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 games this season, averaging more than one strikeout each inning.
Detroit opens a three-game series Friday night at Philadelphia.

Lions 2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams turns in best practice of training camp

Lions 2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams turns in best practice of training camp originally appeared on The Sporting News With Alim McNeill out until at least October, the Detroit Lions will be relying on Tyleik Williams to be an impactful player immediately in his rookie campaign. The 2025 No.28 overall pick is starting on Detroit's defensive line along with D.J. Reader on the interior, and the rookie turned in his best day of practice on Monday. According to Tim Twentyman of Williams tallied two sacks during team periods on Monday and also showcased his power in the pass rushing department and run game. "Tyleik Williams had his best practice of training camp Monday night," Twentyman wrote. "Williams recorded two sacks on quarterback Jared Goff in team periods and made a number of other nice plays in the run game. His sacks were on bull rushes, pushing veteran center Graham Glasgow and left guard Christian Mahogany right back into Goff." "Williams' power was on full display on the sacks, but he's also showed off nimble feet for a 330-pound man. He's got great initial quickness to cross the face of defenders and knock them off balance and then let his power and push take over. He plays a lot on the other side of the line of scrimmage." During his four-year college career at Ohio State, Williams wasn't known for posting prolific sack numbers. The 22-year-old posted just 11.5 sacks in his career with the Buckeyes and was more known for his stout run defense. However, it looks like Williams is improving as a pass rusher at Lions' camp, and is showcasing why he will likely be a Day 1 starter on Detroit's defensive line. Williams didn't play in the Hall of Fame game versus the Los Angeles Chargers last Thursday. However, we should see him in action for the first time on Friday as the Lions travel to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to square off against the Atlanta Falcons. Florida's long snapper Rocco Underwood named to 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list

The 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list was recently released and included Florida football longsnapper Rocco Underwood, who earned the honor last season after a superb campaign. The rising redshirt senior originally from Lake Mary, Florida, will have the opportunity to repeat the honor in 2025 following an effort that also resulted in All-SEC recognition, as well as being named a Phil Steele First-Team All-American and AFCA Second-Team All-American. He has also made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll thrice in his career, along with a SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll mention. Underwood has tallied a total of 314 special teams snaps over his four-season career in Gainesville, during which he made seven total tackles on special teams. Of those snaps, 103 of them came last fall when the special-teamer made significant improvements in his game across the board, amassing 56 successful punt coverages as well as 57 successful field goal and extra point attempts during that campaign. He notched his single-season career-high of three tackles in 2024, also notching his lone credited fumble recovery against the Florida State Seminoles. About the Patrick Mannelly Award The Patrick Mannelly Award was first issued in 2019 and is given to the best long snapper in college football. Named after Patrick Mannelly, who played as the long snapper for Duke University from 1993 to 1997 and was the long snapper for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2013. During his time in the NFL, Mannelly never recorded a bad snap and was credited with playing a pivotal role in the success of the kickers he played with. The award benefits Bernie's Book Bank, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to help children develop their reading skills by providing free books to help build their home libraries in the local Lake Buff, Illinois, area. The 30-man watch list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists on Nov. 17, with the three finalists being announced on Dec. 1 and the winner being selected on Dec. 13.
