Protect your hair from sun, sea and chlorine on holiday with £24 waterproof mask
Nothing ruins your hair faster than chlorine, salt water and too much sun, which can make your long-awaited holiday a nightmare for your locks. From drying out your strands to causing discolouration and tangles, the combination of chemicals and UV rays can spell disaster for your hair.
However you don't need to spend your whole trip trying to keep your head above water, because Philip Kingsley's Swimcap Water-Resistant Mask is here to save the day. Originally created for the US Olympic synchronised swimming team, the hair mask has now become one of the go-tos for swimmers and sunbathers alike for protecting their hair.
The Swimcap Water-Resistant Mask is £24 for a large 100ml bottle, and is suitable for all hair types, including coloured and chemically treated hair. It creates a protective barrier between your hair and external aggressors like chlorine, salt water and UV rays, and helps to nourish and hydrate each strand while you wear it.
It's been fortified with hydrolysed elastin which boosts the strength and body of each strand, minimising breakage and damage. You also get extra moisture from castor oil and olive oil, leaving it silky soft and shiny after use.
You just need to apply it to damp hair in sections and comb it evenly through your hair, and leave it on whilst sunbathing or swimming – it's fully water resistant, so you don't need to worry about it coming out. For the best results you can apply it the day before you're planning on being in the sun, and it's important to leave it on whenever you know your hair will be exposed to things like sun and swimming.
Other options with similar results include Umberto Giannini Swim Proof Hair Protecting Cream, £8.95, which protects your hair from sun, chlorine and salt water whilst still letting you style your hair as normal after use. If your hair has already suffered the effects of your trip abroad, the SUN BUM Hair Mask, £19.99, or Color Wow's Coconut Cocktail, £25, are both excellent at restoring dry, damaged or over processed hair almost instantly.
However Philip Kingsley's Swimcap Water-Resistant Mask has been getting rave reviews from LookFantastic shoppers, with a 4.85 star rating. One wrote: 'Absolute lifesaver on holiday! Saves your hair from all the chlorine & sun! Hair feels so soft after using it! Worth the money!'
Another agreed: 'I have coloured hair and a few times in the pool my hair was coming out and was dry. This has changed my life no hair coming out and feels healthy after doesn't feel like I've been in the pool I will be using constantly now.'
A third chimed in: 'I first tried this about 2 years ago for our holidays it's an absoloute God send for keeping your hair nice when in the sun or pool but I then realised it's amazing to put in the kids hair for there swimming classes. It stops the hair getting that build up of chlorine and when they rinse it out after swimming their hair is tat free and easy to manage. A little goes a long way too so although it's not the cheapest you do get your moneys worth.'
Whilst a fourth was thrilled, writing: 'I have bleached highlighted hair, and this protected my hair from discolouration in the 30 degree heat whilst swimming. I didn't want my hair going green from the chlorine, and it didn't! I love this product, and is a firm favourite for holidays to protect my hair.'
In fact there were only two reviews less than five stars, both of which were four star ratings. One was from someone who had yet to try it, and the other said: 'Love this for holidays as protects hair against sun, UV, chlorine etc. Only downside is that it has to be applied to damp hair!'

'I've always struggled to find shorts that fit my curves until these £27.50 ones'
Shopping writer Lauren has struggled all summer to find the perfect pair of shorts for her fuller bum and smaller waist - until now I've always floated somewhere between a size 8 and 10, but since hitting my thirties, my body has shifted - primarily, my bum has grown into more of a size 12. No complaints here, but adapting to this change hasn't been the easiest, especially when it comes to summer dressing. Finding a pair of shorts that fit my waist and hips comfortably has felt like an Olympic sport, and I've been failing miserably. So when I spotted Joanie's Pipette Gingham High-Waist Shorts in the sale, I snapped them up quickly, albeit with low expectations. I've been burned before, returning pairs from Stradivarius and Nobody's Child. But to my surprise and delight, Joanie's organic cotton shorts actually fit. They're high-waisted and slightly structured, with a silhouette that hugs all the right places. There's enough room at the waistband to keep me comfortable (even on a bloated day), and they don't cut into my thighs or ride up when I sit down or walk. They're fitted without being restrictive, and for someone who's never been into oversized or baggy shorts, I was relieved I didn't have to compromise on style. They're a great addition to plain outfits, such as a simple black t-shirt and sandals, but also work well with my navy pinstriped blazer, gold jewellery and white trainers. There is also a matching blazer available for those who adore the coordinated look. Shop the sale £55 £27.50 Joanie Buy Now on Joanie Product Description They aren't perfect, though. They crease easily - as cotton often does - but the gingham print does a decent job of disguising it, so it doesn't bother me too much. And considering how confident they make me feel, it's a small price to pay. For those with a similar shape, there are more options out there. For instance, Levi's 501 Mid Thigh Shorts, £42, give that vintage curve-hugging fit, though you might want to size up for comfort. They're available in three colours: light blue, mid blue and dark blue. Otherwise, H&M's Bermuda Shorts, £22.99, are another style to consider. Their longer inseam provides more coverage on the thighs to prevent chafing, while the extra length helps balance out proportions. However, the Joanie shorts have officially earned their place in my summer wardrobe. They're available via Joanie here.

The 33-year-old gave birth to her third child and first daughter, Lily, in early May and has since returned to work and public events, including an appearance alongside husband Jason at the Wimbledon Championships earlier this month. Kenny admitted that it wasn't all sunshine and roses in the lead-up to the event, struggling to find a dress that she felt comfortable in so soon after giving birth, which would also allow her to feed her daughter during the day. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Posting to her 221k followers on Instagram, the five-time Olympic champion opened up about the mental and emotional toll being a mother to a newborn can have on you and was overwhelmed to see such an incredible response from others in a similar position. Dame Laura Kenny in her role as President of Commonwealth Games England "I find it hugely important to post about this stuff, especially from a women's point of view," she said. "We actually looked at the digital response and there were 1.5 million views and 86% were female on that post alone. "That's why it's so important, and that's why I posted it, because I want every other mum that's sitting at home to know how I was feeling. "You see a nice happy photo of us at Wimbledon, but that wasn't the backstory. The backstory was me actually quite upset, trying to find an outfit because I felt like I didn't look like me, and I'm having to put myself in the limelight, and find a dress that will let me feed my child. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "Yes, going to Wimbledon is a choice, but it is also something that I wanted to do, and I shouldn't have to give that up." Kenny retired from her career in the velodrome in March 2024 and has since stepped into a new role as President of Commonwealth Games England. It is a role she took on at seven months pregnant and one that she has taken in stride, having already attended her first board meeting less than 12 weeks after giving birth. And even though Lily might admittedly be the easiest of her three children when it comes to sleeping, Kenny knows that returning to work so quickly is hardly the norm for most mothers. She also noted that it is something she enjoys, having always embraced chaos in the workplace. "Some people think it's a bit mental coming back so soon," she said. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "I mean, I filmed a podcast when she was just two days old, and it didn't even occur to me that it was kind of mental. "Our line of work is a bit random, and it is a bit all over the place, and so it's always been like that. "I trained with Albie, and he just travelled the world with us so for me, I've actually never known any different and so I'm just enjoying it again. "I'm not going to say it's not difficult, but I like the mayhem and absolute carnage." Kenny's new role is quickly heating up, with today marking one year to go until the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. It is a milestone that the former track cyclist knows well from her time as an athlete, believing that it was a key moment for athletes to nail down their targets. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "From an athlete's point of view, you can think that the Games are coming around really fast, and it can almost seem a little bit scary," she said. "But I think it feels scary, and it feels daunting because it means so much to you. I think it brings a whole host of emotion. "I always felt like a year to go was really achievable. I could set a target by that point." But from her new stead as President, Kenny admitted that she is relishing the new behind-the-scenes aspect that she has access to. From board meetings about accommodation to talking through athlete selection processes, Kenny has a whole new world of insight into what happens to make a Commonwealth Games come to life. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad And with the clock ticking down until the opening day of competition on 23 July 2026 in Glasgow, she is more than ready to get stuck in. "I'm so excited," she said. "The reason I took the role in the first place was because I felt like I wanted to give back to the athletes and because Team England have played a huge part in my career. "So, the bit that I'm obviously most excited about is actually talking to the athletes and getting involved and that will only ramp up from now." The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will run from 23 July to 2 August 2026. Keep up with everything Team England at
