Six accused in Gopalpur gang-rape case on CB remand
BERHAMPUR: The Crime Branch on Tuesday took the six adult accused in the Gopalpur gang-rape case on remand for further interrogation.
The court on Monday had granted the CB one-day remand of the accused - Kunal Pradhan of Patpur village, Baburam Dalai and Lakshman Pradhan of Barupada, Om Pradhan of Sikiri, and Deepak Tarai and Pramod Nayak of Purushottampur.
The CB officials took the six accused to Gopalpur police station for interrogation, aiming to gather more information and evidence related to the incident.
A total of 10 accused, including four juveniles, have been arrested in connection with the case. While the adults were lodged at the Circle Jail, the juveniles have been sent to a correctional and observation home.
Earlier, the victim had identified the six adult accused during the Test Identification (TI) parade. Preliminary investigation has suggested that three of the six accused allegedly raped the victim, while the remaining acted as accomplices.

As part of heightened security measures for the 148th Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad, the Crime Branch has deployed anti-drone guns developed by Bangalore-based AXISCADES Aerospace & Technologies Pvt Ltd to monitor the 16-km procession route, officials said on Friday. According to officials, the advanced equipment is designed to detect and jam unauthorised drones, ensuring that only drones authorised by the administration remain operational along the yatra route. Speaking to ANI, Prashant Sharma, Anti-Drone Gun Operator at AXISCADES, said, "This technology is a detection and jamming unit for drones. We have supplied 100 of these units to the Indian Army Northern Command. It was successfully used in Operation Sindoor... We add the department's drones to our list. Other drones are highlighted in red colour (in our cameras), so we ask the official whether to jam them or not." Meanwhile, a large number of devotees participated in the procession on the occasion of Ashadhi Bij (Kutchi New Year) in Ahmedabad on Friday. Officials said that the deployment of the anti-drone system is part of broader efforts to ensure safety during one of the city's major religious events, which draws massive crowds each year. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi also spoke to ANI about the scale of the security arrangements in place. "Lakhs of devotees come for Darshan during the Rath Yatra along its 16-km route. More than 23,800 security personnel have been deployed. A few elephants lost control this morning, but within minutes, forest officials, the police team, and the AMC managed to bring the situation under control. Forest and medical teams are present with all the elephants," he said. Meanwhile,the grand annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath commenced in Odisha's Puri on Friday, as thousands of devotees began pulling the majestic chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, amid chants, drumbeats, and spiritual fervour. Following the completion of key rituals, including the sacred 'Chhera Pahanra' (sweeping ceremony) performed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the deities were ceremonially placed on their respective chariots -- Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana. With the blowing of conch shells and rhythmic beating of cymbals and mridangas, the pulling of the chariots began along the Grand Road (Bada Danda), marking the start of the deities' annual journey. The 'Chhera Pahanra' is one of the most significant customs of the Rath Yatra, symbolising humility and equality before the divine. During the ritual, the Gajapati Maharaja, the erstwhile King of Puri and chief servitor of Lord Jagannath, swept around the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra with a golden broom, sprinkling sandalwood water and flowers, and invoking blessings to purify the path of the divine journey. Dressed in traditional attire, the Gajapati Maharaja arrived in a royal procession from the Puri royal palace to the Grand Road, where the deities were placed on their respective chariots. His ceremonial act represents the deep intertwining of royalty and devotion in Jagannath culture.

Fake documents case: Aluva court issues proclamation notice against Iranian national
KOCHI: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Aluva has issued a proclamation notice against an Iranian national caught attempting to travel to London using fake documents in 2004. 42-year-old Ali Rostamli Esmaeil is a native of Tabriz, Iran. Ali was intercepted at Kochi's Nedumbassery airport on March 12, 2004, while trying to fly to London. He was subsequently arrested following a case registered at the Chengamanad police station, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act, and the Foreigners Act. However, after being released on bail, Ali absconded and has remained untraceable. The Ernakulam unit of the Crime Branch is currently investigating the case, and a chargesheet has already been filed in court. As Ali failed to appear for a trial, the court has now issued a proclamation under Section 82 of the Criminal Procedure Code, directing him to reappear in connection with the case (CC 754/25). Authorities have urged the public to share any information regarding Ali's whereabouts with the Crime Branch Inspector at 9497987292. Earlier in February, the court had issued similar proclamations against 17 foreign nationals -- hailing from Sri Lanka, Nepal, France, Iran, and Russia. They had also been arrested for attempting to travel abroad using fake documents from Nedumbassery airport.

Alert rickshaw driver, swift police coordination helped trace kidnapped 4-year-old girl in 24 hrs
THANE: In a dramatic rescue operation spanning two states, a four-year-old girl abducted from a construction site in Badlapur West on Tuesday afternoon was safely traced and rescued within 24 hours from a remote village in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district. Alert rickshaw driver, swift police coordination helped trace kidnapped 4-year-old girl in 24 hrs The child, who lived at the site with her parents and two siblings, was lured away while her mother was at work. The family, originally from another state, resides at the site where her father and uncle are employed as labourers. Her mother works as a domestic help in the locality. According to police officials, the accused—identified as 26-year-old Ranjeet Dhurve—had visited the construction site late Monday night, asking for work. Turned away by the site supervisor, he approached the girl's mother requesting food. She refused, citing lack of resources, leading to a brief argument between them. The next afternoon, taking advantage of the child being alone, Dhurve allegedly lured her with chocolates and took her to a nearby rickshaw stand. A labourer at the site had seen him walking away with the girl, but accepted the explanation that he would return shortly after buying her sweets. Fortunately, rickshaw driver Yogesh Chonkar, who was approached by Dhurve for a ride to Badlapur station, grew suspicious. 'He was clutching the girl's hand tightly, and she was pleading in Hindi to be let go,' Chonkar told the police. When questioned, Dhurve claimed the girl was his daughter and was simply scared to travel by rickshaw. Chonkar offered the child biscuits and managed to discreetly take photographs of both before the man asked to be dropped at Kalyan station instead—offering extra money. Chonkar declined but suggested he take a train, and used the opportunity to capture more photos while Dhurve was distracted. Uncertain about what he had witnessed, Chonkar shared his concerns with friends. Later that evening, when the child's mother returned around 4 pm and found her missing, she rushed to the Badlapur West police station and lodged a complaint. Senior police inspector K Thorve said the police acted immediately, circulating the child's details through inter-departmental networks. Within minutes, Chonkar came forward with the photographs he had taken. Multiple police teams were dispatched to Kalyan station and other major transit points, while long-distance trains were monitored. Deputy commissioners of police Sachin Gore (Zone 4) and Amarsinh Jadhav (Crime Branch) led parallel efforts to trace the suspect. CCTV footage from Kalyan station confirmed the presence of Dhurve and the child, though the train they boarded could not be identified. Another team began tracing Dhurve's background. A local villager from Badlapur East identified the suspect as a native of Mordongri village in Madhya Pradesh. With this lead, Senior PI Ashok Koli of Ulhasnagar Crime Branch coordinated with police stations in Ambernath, Badlapur and Kalyan, ensuring swift inter-agency communication. Thane Crime Branch alerted the MP police and local authorities in Mordongri, who, with help from the village sarpanch and residents, tracked down Dhurve. He had reportedly left the girl in his sister's care and was preparing to flee when the police apprehended him. The child was rescued unharmed. After a medical examination and counselling by a child welfare team, the girl was reunited with her family. A Thane police team later brought both the accused and the rescued child back to Maharashtra. Dhurve has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for kidnapping and wrongful confinement, as well as provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He has been remanded in police custody. Officials are also investigating whether he has a criminal past or links to other such incidents.
