Second Arsenal transfer target emerges as Gunners close in on £51m deal
Arsenal's busy summer is already getting into gear as Mikel Arteta seeks improvement after an injury-impacted season. The Gunners were able to secure another second-place finish in the Premier League, but their points tally dropped off significantly compared to the previous two campaigns.
There are clear areas of focus as we approach the opening of the transfer window. One of these is up front, where injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus left Arteta short of options at a key point in the season.
A new deep-lying midfielder is also a priority, whether or not Thomas Partey sticks around. Martin Zubimendi looks like being that man, and we'll have the latest on the Spain international in today's round-up.
Arteta is set to lose a couple of fringe players, too. Kieran Tierney is on his way back to Celtic and Jorginho is Flamengo-bound, while Neto and Raheem Sterling will return to their parent clubs after a season on loan in North London.
We've also got the latest on some of the Gunners' other transfer targets, with potential to bolster the squad in all areas. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from around the Emirates Stadium.
Zubimendi on his way, Sane next?
Arsenal have met Martin Zubimendi's release clause, with a £51million move now looking to be a matter of time. They won't stop there, though, with Leroy Sane remaining a target.
Sane worked with Mikel Arteta at Manchester City and is believed to remain on good terms with the Spaniard. He is out of contract at Bayern Munich this summer, though the German champions haven't fully given up on convincing him to stick around.
According to The Times, Sane's agent was due to meet with Bayern on Wednesday. The winger's new offer is thought to be on a lower base wage than his current deal but with bonuses included.
Man Utd keen on Arsenal-linked Garcia
Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has long been linked with Arsenal, but the Gunners appear reluctant to meet his £21million release clause. That may leave the door open for fellow suitors Barcelona, but they aren't the only ones in the mix.
According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are readying a late bid to bring in Garcia as they look to offload at least one keeper this summer. Barcelona remain in the hunt, though, as do Newcastle United, while the Spaniard could yet end up staying put.
"I'm very calm, and whatever decision needs to be made, I'll definitely think it over a lot with my people and choose what will be best for me. And I'm sure it will be like that," Garcia recently said when asked about leaving Espanyol for their local rivals.
Arsenal told what they're getting with Zubimendi
A former team-mate of Martin Zubimendi has assured rsenal they are getting a great person as well as a great footballer. The midfielder looks to finally get his move to the Premier League after sunning Liverpool interest to stay with Real Sociedad last summer.
"He was always a very complete player," Benoit Cachenaut, who came through the ranks with Zubimendi at La Real, told Sky Sports. "Technical, quick, intelligent, potent.
"You could already see he had everything to get to the highest level. But as well as being very good on the pitch, he was a very humble guy, always smiling, always very friendly."

‘Cheap' defending cost England in Euro 2025 opener, admits Leah Williamson
Leah Williamson admitted England were not good enough on the ball and said 'cheap, one-versus-one defending' cost the Lionesses badly in their 2-1 defeat against France, but vowed her side would improve before facing the Netherlands on Wednesday. The defending European champions looked second-best to France for large portions of their meeting in Zurich and the Lionesses captain said: 'When you're losing the ball really cheaply, and then you're in emergency defending, and when you've done four or five counterattacks in a row against quality like that, it is tough, but we hold ourselves to higher standards, in the individual battles. Sign up to Moving the Goalposts No topic is too small or too big for us to cover as we deliver a twice-weekly roundup of the wonderful world of women's football after newsletter promotion 'The positive is that I've not seen us like that, in terms of turning over the ball so much, for a while now, so yes [while it is] really frustrating, I think that's how we'll take today. Tomorrow, back on it.' The Arsenal centre-back added to ITV: '[It was] cheap defending one-v-one, we learnt from those mistakes in fairness and grew in the game, but on the ball, [we were] not good enough, we couldn't keep it in the areas that we needed to keep it, and we got better as they tired, we took advantage of that, but [it was] not enough in the end. 'I think, everybody [has to] take responsibility for themselves today, have a look at 'what areas could they have had an impact on the game more?' - I will. But then tomorrow, we have a new gameplan [versus the Netherlands], different spaces available, a different type of opposition, but we'll look at what we did today, and improve.' England were 2-0 at the break after a dominant spell of pressure from France in the latter part of the first half, but after the game, their head coach Sarina Wiegman defended their decision not to make any half-time substitutions. When asked why she did not make any changes at the break, she replied: 'Because I had the conviction that having a short meeting at half-time [would mean] that we could do things better in the second half and I wanted to give them that opportunity. I think this team is capable so I didn't want to swap straight away.' Wiegman also defended her decision to give Lauren James a first start since April, following a hamstring injury. The Chelsea forward had played just half an hour of football, against Jamaica last Sunday, before this tournament but Wiegman deemed her fit to face France. When asked if that had been a gamble or a mistake, Wiegman replied: 'No, I don't see it as a mistake, it was a choice. I think if she had scored in that first minute, and if the cross she made in the first half where we just couldn't just get a head on it [had gone in], I think we'd be having a different conversation.' England defender Jess Carter said: 'I think we played like we were a little bit scared today, maybe we weren't aggressive enough, we maybe were worrying about their threats in behind and what they can do rather than doing what we can do. We didn't do as well on the ball, or off the ball. 'The only positive to take is that last 10 minutes, for me watching it from the side I really believed we would get a goal, I really felt like we could get a second goal. We have to focus on that 10 minutes that we did have at the end and take that over to the next game, the energy the subs brought on was incredible, really pressing and being aggressive. It's something to take to the next game.' France, who reached the semi-finals in England three years ago, face Wales next, hoping to secure a place in the knockout stages. Their in-form winger Delphine Cascarino recognised that England had made a bright start but added: 'Yes, we got scared initially at the beginning but we remained calm. We managed to get to our goal and our objective. We complied with our gameplan and we really controlled this match, I believe.'

West Ham 'REJECT £50m offer for Mohammed Kudus from London rivals' as Hammers 'demand £85m' for Ghana international
West Ham have rebuffed a £50million bid from Tottenham to sign Mohammed Kudus, according to reports. Mail Sport understands that the Ghana international is keen on a move, and will need little convincing to accept personal terms with the Hammers ' London rivals. Kudus has an £85million clause for Premier League clubs, active for the first 10 days of July. The forward is one of West Ham's most sellable assets, and the club have accepted that they will need to sell before they can buy. European clubs will have to pay slightly less for Kudus (£80m) while Saudi Arabian sides are being forced to cough up a whopping £120m. Despite Tottenham's latest bid being rejected, it is understood that the two clubs are still engaging in negotiations over a deal, according to The Athletic. There has also been contact from Chelsea to register their interest in Kudus. While there has not been an official bid tabled yet, there has been informal talk over acceptable figures. Kudus would be Tottenham's second signing under new boss Thomas Frank, after Mathys Tel's loan move was made permanent last month Kudus would be Tottenham's second signing under new boss Thomas Frank, after Mathys Tel's loan move was made permanent last month. The 24-year-old would also be the first transfer between Tottenham and West Ham in 14 years if a deal is agreed. Scott Parker joining Tottenham in 2011 remains the last transfer between the two bitter rivals. Daniel Levy blocked Emmanuel Adebayor from moving in the opposite direction four years later and the two clubs have not done business in 14 years. Kudus began his career at Danish club Nordsjaelland after arriving from the Ghanaian Right to Dream Academy - a youth association football academy system based in Accra, the country's capital. In 2020, he joined Ajax for around £7.5m, where he scored 27 goals in 87 appearances and broke through under Erik ten Hag. Kudus arrived at West Ham from Ajax for close to £40m two summers ago and made an immediate impact, netting 14 goals across all competitions in his debut campaign. He was a bright spot amid a difficult season last term at the London Stadium, registering five goals and a further four assists across his 35 appearances in all competitions.

Rangers 'target' £10m-rated Crystal Palace star as final piece of three winger transfer shortlist revealed
Jesurun Rak-Sakyi is the latest winger to emerge on Rangers' transfer radar Rangers are reportedly keen on a move for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – as their drive to add quality in the wide positions ramps up. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, scoring seven and assisting two as the Blades made the playoff final but narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League. Remaining in the Championship appears to have torpedoed their chances of signing him permanently and that has opened the door for Russell Martin to make a move. He's now back at Palace and the Scottish Sun say Rangers are chasing a deal to bring him to Ibrox. Palace reportedly want £10m to sell him this summer and it's unclear as yet whether Rangers plan to negotiate over a permanent deal or bring him in on an initial loan – though meeting anything close to that price tag may be contingent on securing major funds for Hamza Igamane first. It comes as the new Ibrox owners shift their focus to strengthening in the wide positions with reports today suggesting they plan to sign up to three wingers in the coming weeks. Thelo Aasgaard was signed today but he is viewed more as a number ten by Martin. As things stand, the only wide options available to Russell Martin are Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland – a thin pool that lacks the proven, consistent quality the club are seeking in those positions. Reports in Brazil today claimed Rangers are interested in 'Brazilian magician' Weslley Patati, a versatile attacker who primarily plays off the right wing. As things stand, the only wide options available to Russell Martin are Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland – a thin pool that lacks the proven, consistent quality the club are seeking in those positions. Patati and Rak-Sakyi may well be two of them, while they've also been linked with Como's Samuel Ballet this week and the 24-year-old could be another on the way. Rangers are also closing in on deals for defenders Conor Coady and Nasser Djiga as they beef things up at both ends of the pitch.
