Spend a relaxing winter in nature on an all-expense paid trip to wild Tasmania
SINGAPORE – For the first time, Tasmania is inviting one Singapore resident to embrace winter life Down Under on a week-long, all-expenses-paid trip in August.
The trip, dubbed a 'Winternship', is part of a campaign run by Tourism Tasmania and travel booking platform Trip.com, and will feature an itinerary of Tasmanian experiences.
The winner will visit three establishments in Australia's southernmost state – Kuuma Nature Sauna, Devil's Corner Cellar Door winery and Curringa Farm – where he or she will take part in hands-on activities that showcase Tasmania's tourism offerings.

For instance, at Kuuma Nature Sauna – dubbed the 'first Australian sauna boat' – the winner will spend a morning loading a floating wood-fired sauna before heading to the Southern Ocean for a cold plunge.
The pontoon vessel is custom-designed for sauna cruising and can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests, who can enjoy the sauna on board and dive into the ocean, which is a brisk 9 deg C in winter and 17 deg C in summer.
At Devil's Corner Cellar Door, a two-hour drive from Hobart, the winner will shuck fresh oysters and learn how Tasmania's terroir contributes to its rich agriculture.

And on the roughly 303ha Curringa Farm – where around 3,000 sheep roam – he or she can wrangle livestock in sheep-shearing demonstrations and sessions to hand-feed herds.
The itinerary will include tours of other popular sites in Tasmania, such as Bruny Island, Cradle Mountain and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Winternship campaign follows the success of a previous edition, dubbed Odd Jobs, where Australia residents could win a winter stay in Tasmania taking on quirky roles like wombat walker, stargazer and truffle hunter. The Odd Jobs campaign recorded more than 12,000 applicants for 10 jobs in 2024 .
In 2025, 10 Australia residents will win trips based on such roles.
According to Tasmanian Visitor Survey data in December , Tasmania welcomed around 1.3 million travellers in 2024, of which around 254,000 were international visitors.
Among its top Asian visitor markets were China (9 per cent), Hong Kong (9 per cent) and Singapore (4 per cent).
Ms Sarah Clark, chief executive of Tourism Tasmania, says: 'Singapore has been a longstanding inbound market for Tasmania, with travellers drawn to our pristine wilderness, rich food culture and slower pace of life. Ultimately, we want the 'wintern' to return home with stories to tell, a fresh sense of clarity, and maybe even a newfound love for winter. '

To participate, you must be a Singapore resident aged 18 or older and state, in 50 words or fewer, why you want to be Tasmania's first wintern from Singapore.
The winner will enjoy return flights, six nights' accommodation and transport, and can take along one person on the trip. They must travel between Aug 1 and 31 .

[SINGAPORE] The Singapore Oceanarium at Resorts World Sentosa doesn't just take you into the ocean's depths. It pulls you through 500 million years of marine history, from prehistoric predators to tomorrow's fragile coral reefs. Spread over 22 themed zones and three times the size of its predecessor (SEA Aquarium), the new oceanarium is designed less like an aquarium and more like a time machine. It's one of few marine attractions in the world that doesn't just display the ocean's biodiversity – it shows you the past, present and future, in an immersive presentation. SYDNEY - A vast toxic algae bloom has sparked growing concern in Australia as it lingers off the south coast, killing hundreds of marine species and disrupting fisheries. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese unlocked federal funds this week to cope with the karenia mikimotoi algae as it persists four months after first appearing. South Australia's government said it was holding an emergency meeting on July 22 to be briefed by scientists on the phenomenon. The algae, which damages the gills of fish and suffocates them, stretched across 4,400 sq km when it was first spotted in mid-March, according to the state government. While the South Australian authorities hoped the bloom would disperse, it has instead spread across the region, the latest government update said. A marine heatwave in the area had 'largely abated', it said, but remained in some deeper waters. 'We are talking about extensive mortality of nearly 500 different marine species, including key habitat-forming sponges and other invertebrates, as well as fish. It's completely devastating.' 'Red flashing warning' Karenia mikimotoi has been detected around the world since the 1930s, including in waters off Japan, Norway, the United States and China, and has disrupted local tourism and fishery industries, causing millions of dollars worth of damage. Mr Ian Mitchell, who manages a fish market in Adelaide, said some people had not caught anything since April. 'It's the worst I've ever seen it,' he told national broadcaster ABC. 'I'm speaking to fishermen on a daily basis, and I've got fishermen in tears on the phone,' he said. The federal government announced on July 21 A$14 million (S$11.7 million) in financial assistance to impacted fisheries, clean-up efforts and research into preparedness. Prime Minister Albanese said a 'whole range of issues' had led to the event, including nutrient-rich floodwater run-off and above-average ocean temperatures. Historically, fishing and aquaculture industries can take years to recover from these algae blooms, said Australian Marine Conservation Society chief executive Paul Gamblin. 'It's an enormous red flashing warning that climate change has arrived off Australia and it is having enormous impacts,' he told AFP. South Australia has not previously experienced a toxic algae bloom of this scale or duration. Local authorities have urged beachgoers to avoid swimming in water that is discoloured or foamy, warning that it can irritate the skin and affect breathing. Climate change has led to an increase in the frequency and duration of marine heatwaves across Australia, which significantly affects marine ecosystems. AFP
