Free rent and mom's home-cooked meals. What's not to love? Many young adults have overcome the stigma of living with their parents to save on housing costs, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau analyzed by online loan marketplace LendingTree.
Across the 50 largest metro areas in the U.S., nearly 12% of employed adults live with their parents, LendingTree found. Not surprisingly, multigenerational housing is most prevalent in expensive sun-soaked U.S. cities, such as Los Angeles and Miami.

'In previous generations, moving back in with mom and dad might have been a sign of defeat or failure, but it's not really seen that way now,' Matt Schulz, LendingTree's chief consumer finance analyst, told the New York Post. 'People are much more practical, and people see the value in spending a little time with their parents.'
Using data from the 2018 and 2023 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Surveys, LendingTree found that economic factors were the main reason adults aged 25-40 decided to move back home. Whether it's the high cost of housing in California or the limited job opportunities in places such as Detroit, more than ever, young adults are seeking refuge with their parents.
'If they're living with Mom or Dad, they're able to pay less for rent, groceries and other basic bills, allowing them to stash money away in an emergency fund, save for a car or mortgage down payment, or even get a head start on retirement savings,' Shultz said. 'It may not be the sexiest, but it can make an awful lot of sense.'

The LendingTree report showed that Riverside, California, had the most adults in the country (22%) living with their parents, with Los Angeles (20%) and Miami (18%) close behind.
The report also showed that adults who live at home generally make 43.5% less on average than adults of the same age who live independently — earning around $41,000 per year compared to $70,000 for those who don't.
Although multigenerational housing has increased in certain sections of the country, such as Las Vegas (22%), Cleveland (16.7%), and Sacramento, California (8.1%), in many less expensive areas, including Oklahoma City, Nashville, and Minneapolis, it has dropped substantially. The video-game-playing, basement-dwelling cliché of deadbeat kids living with their parents long into adulthood doesn't hold for LendingTree's research. Nearly 12% of adult children living at home hold a bachelor's degree or higher. It is sheer economic savings that motivate them to seek parental refuge.
The study shows that, on average, if they chose to live on their own, they would need to allocate more than 40% of their monthly income to rent a one-bedroom apartment, which in many areas is not feasible.
The National Association of Realtors' 2025 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report found that 21% of Gen X buyers have purchased multigenerational homes, followed by younger baby boomers aged 60 to 69.
'The rise in multigenerational home buying underscores a broader trend driven by economic necessity and evolving family dynamics, as it offers a practical and supportive living arrangement that resonates with many families, particularly in times of economic uncertainty and changing social dynamics,' Amethyst Marroquin, a research assistant for NAR, explained.

Red state success story: Texas and Florida metros lead nation in economic and population growth

The South hosts a substantial number of the metro areas experiencing the fastest growth in the U.S. That's according to a recently released report from LendingTree that determined eight of America's 10 "biggest boomtowns" were located in the south, with Texas and Florida leading the way. Four different states within the South had a presence among the top 10 fastest-growing cities, with a Western state — Colorado — also making an appearance, according to LendingTree. Florida was a standout, claiming half of the spots in the LendingTree's ranking of the top 10. Top Five Buyer-friendly Housing Markets Offer Price Cuts And Increased Inventory The site identified the 10 fastest-growing metro areas in the U.S. using data that took into account measures such as median earnings, annual gross domestic product changes, population, housing and active workforce populations from 2021-2023 that it grouped within broader categories of "people and housing," "work and earnings" and "business and economy." Read On The Fox Business App At the top of its ranking, the below five metros were found to have shown the fastest growth. In addition to receiving the No. 1 overall ranking for growth, the capital of the Lone Star state also took the top spot for the "people and housing" and "business and economy" categories, according to the report. Its annual gross domestic product posted a 14.6% jump between 2021 and 2023, more than any other metro LendingTree looked at. Orlando, which placed No. 2 overall, had the highest score when it came to "work and earnings," per LendingTree. North Port is located in southwestern Florida not far from Sarasota. It showed strong growth in its GDP, number of houses and number of residents, among other things, according to the report. Nashville, often referred to as Music City, serves as the capital of Tennessee. It was found to be the city exhibiting the fourth-fastest growth, with a score of 69.5 overall, LendingTree said. Cape Coral posted a rise of 12.3% in annual GDP between 2021 and 2023 and notched quite a jump in employer identification numbers, helping it place No. 2 in the "business and economy" category, the report indicated. The metro sits across the Caloosahatchee River from Fort Myers. The remaining five metros that made up the 10 "biggest boomtowns" included Colorado Springs, Colorado; Charleston, South Carolina; Lakeland, Florida; Deltona, Florida; and Denver, Colorado. LendingTree linked Florida's large presence in the top 10 to its tax policies, its post-secondary institutions supplying workers and its business policies. In total, the site analyzed 100 of the country's biggest metros. Apart from one of them, each city had a decrease in its unemployment rate between 2021 and 2023, according to the report. The Tokenization Market Has A 4,000x Growth Potential According Bitwise: Here's 'The Cleanest Way' To Invest In The Narrative

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. The tokenization market is a potential 4,000x opportunity that is "having a moment," according to Bitwise investment chief Matt Hougan. Hougan said this in a note to investors on Tuesday, citing statements from BlackRock (NYSE:BLK) CEO Larry Fink and recent developments in the space. In Fink's annual shareholder letter this year, he wrote: "Every stock, every bond, every fund-every asset-can be tokenized." The move towards this future appears to be underway. Don't Miss: — no wallets, just price speculation and free paper trading to practice different strategies. Grow your IRA or 401(k) with Crypto – . In the past month, Bybit, Kraken and Robinhood (NASDAQ:HOOD) have all launched tokenized stock trading for non-U.S. clients and Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) has applied to launch the product for U.S. customers. Meanwhile, financial institutions have poured $135 million into Canton Network, a new Layer 1 blockchain purpose-built for stock and bond trading. Mercado Bitcoin has also announced plans to tokenize $200 million worth of assets on the XRP Ledger. Additionally, Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Paul Atkins has expressed interest in fostering the sector's advancement. Amid these developments, Hougan said the tokenization market could represent a 4,000x opportunity if Fink is correct, pointing out that stocks and bonds alone are a $257 trillion market combined. Trending: New to crypto? on Coinbase. Hougan said "the cleanest way" to position for the potential tokenization wave is to hold "a basket of the top Layer 1 blockchains and infrastructure plays." He specifically named Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Chainlink as promising choices. "One could argue for concentrating your bets—especially since Ethereum is the current leader in tokenization and is well positioned to win market share—but that seems overly specific to me," he said. "Many different players are getting bites at the apple. It would be unfortunate to call the tokenization trend early only to bet on the wrong horse." Beyond these cryptocurrency assets, Hougan said investors could also gain from holding a mix of stocks that could benefit from tokenization. Examples cited by Hougan include Robinhood, Coinbase and Circle (NYSE:CRCL).The latest note from Hougan comes as he suggests that the tokenization wave may be set to impact the market prices of related assets soon. He said while it may take over a decade for the majority of stock and bonds trading to happen on-chain, there was a possibility of a 1-5% market penetration in a few years. "It would translate into trillions of dollars ... more than any other crypto application or asset, including Bitcoin," he said. Hougan said this outcome was inevitable due to the 24/7 nature of blockchain technology and the superior settlement speeds. He said it was just last year that the stock market moved from a two-day settlement system to a one-day settlement system for the first time in a century. "In what other industry would we celebrate matching the operating speed from 1934?" Hougan quipped. In contrast, trades can settle in seconds on the blockchain.
