
Synergy House's Profit Plunges 73% To RM2.4 Million Despite Higher Revenue
For 1Q25, the group's net profit decreased by 72.8% to RM2.45 million from RM9.01 million.
This is despite the group recording revenue of RM88.1 million, a 5.3% increase from RM83.7 million in the corresponding period last year. This was underpinned by a strong performance in the group's business-to-consumer (B2C) segment.
The group's B2C revenue soared 17.3% year-on-year to RM51.2 million, up from RM43.7 million in the corresponding quarter last year. This performance was fuelled by strong demand from North America, Europe and Malaysia, as Synergy House continues to expand its presence on major e-commerce platforms and tap into evolving consumer trends.
The positive momentum in B2C helped partially offset a 7.8% contraction in business-to-business (B2B) revenue, which stood at RM36.9 million compared to RM40 million in 1Q24. The B2B segment faced headwinds from geopolitical tensions in Europe and Asia, although North American markets remained resilient.
Despite the profit dip, Synergy House Executive Director Tan Eu Tah said the group's financial position remains strong.
'As of March 31, 2025, the group reported shareholders' funds of RM126.2 million, a net gearing ratio of just 0.09 times and a healthy current ratio of 1.9 times.
'The group also held RM59.9 million in cash, bank balances and short-term investments, reinforcing its liquidity and ability to navigate short-term obligations,' Tan said, adding that the group will maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook for the remainder of FY25.
'We are sharpening our B2C strategy by diversifying across more e-commerce platforms and expanding into premium product categories that align with shifting consumer preferences.
'Our investment in artificial intelligence and market intelligence tools is equipping us with real-time insights to respond faster and smarter,' he said.
While the near-term outlook remains clouded by macro and geopolitical risks, Tan said Synergy House is anchoring its strategy on digital transformation, product innovation and resilient e-commerce channels.
'We are committed to responsible growth that delivers long-term value to our stakeholders.
'By blending innovation with operational discipline, we aim to strengthen our position as a global player in the online furniture retail space,' Tan added. Related

Based on the government's gazette, the scope of the expanded SST includes wood pulp raw materials, various types of paper stationery, printed materials, stamps, and postcards, Oriental Daily reported. Among the detailed list of goods subject to the expanded SST are various types of pulp used to produce paper, such as mechanical pulp, chemical pulp, and recycled pulp. This would mean various types of paper and stationery products come under the expanded SST list, including newsprint, notepads, exercise books, account books, folders, receipt books, diaries, and other common stationery. The selling prices for these products would likely be reviewed due to the increasing costs. Additionally, printed products including books, brochures, maps, architectural and engineering drawings, cheques and stock certificates, postcards and greeting cards also fall under the scope of this new taxation. Persatuan Pertubuhan Penjual Alatulis dan Buku Malaysia (PPPABM) president Tan Chong Ong told Oriental Daily many businesses have received notification letters from suppliers on the potential price hike of the mentioned products. According to him, paper-related products may see a deeper impact given that paper is the raw material for many supplies and its cost increase involves more aspects, compared to stationery products. He said the entire industry is more concerned about the costs for paper-related products since they do not see any major impact for stationery products, for the time being. 'The main issue now is paper,' he pointed out. Tan said the federation is in the process of gathering information and feedback from various relevant associations prior to having a meeting with the government. He said they will negotiate with relevant departments for a win-win solution. The government can listen to what enterprises have to say and, together, develop a result that benefits both parties, he said. 'If businesses cannot sustain and subsequently withdraw from the industry, the government risks reducing tax revenue, which may hurt the country's coffers,' he added. ‘AI can only help journalism'

The Sarawak Premier said human judgement, moral courage, integrity and empathy were the essence of journalism. 'These are the values that no machine can replicate. In truth, technology is at its most powerful when it works hand-in-hand with humanity, not when it replaces it. 'That is why the future of journalism is not artificial but augmented. 'It is about enabling journalists to do more, reach more and inform more with greater accuracy and depth,' he said when opening the Sarawak media conference here yesterday. The two-day conference, themed 'Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Media and Journalism', is held in conjunction with the state-level National Journalists' Day (Hawana) celebration. Abang Johari said the theme reflected the rapid evolution of the media landscape and the need for all stakeholders to adapt and respond constructively. He said AI was already being used to generate news reports, translate speeches in real time, verify facts at lightning speed and detect disinformation. In this respect, Abang Johari called on journalists to uphold ethics while using AI. He said journalism was not just the reporting of events but the pursuit of truth. 'Today's journalists are not only storytellers, they are guardians of public trust. 'That trust must be defended with every decision we make, including the use of technology,' he added. Abang Johari also said Sarawak was building an ecosystem for AI and innovation to support the state's development towards high-income status by 2030. He said this includes setting up the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) as a centre of excellence for AI research, policy development and human capital training. 'Through SAIC, we are not only developing local expertise in AI but ensuring that the deployment of these technologies is governed by a strong ethical framework that protects public trust and democratic values,' he said.
