Rulani Mokwena breaks silence on Zwane's CAF final snub

Rulani Mokwena, former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, has finally addressed Themba Zwane's surprise omission from the CAF Champions League final. While choosing his words carefully, Mokwena made it clear that he holds immense admiration for the player known affectionately as 'Mshishi'.
Despite playing a central role in Sundowns clinching their historic eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title, Zwane never stepped onto the pitch during the CAF Champions League final. Many fans were left baffled by his absence from such a crucial fixture.
Speaking on Soccer Africa, Mokwena refused to criticise the decision directly, but his words carried weight.
'Yeah, it always has been that,' Rulani Mokwena said.
'But I don't want to talk about it because I think I have expressed my feelings about how I feel about Mshishi and everybody knows.'
Mokwena didn't hold back in highlighting Zwane's cultural and sporting impact, calling him 'special' and drawing attention to his journey from humble beginnings in Tembisa to the global stage of club football.
'Mshishi is special, and there's more to just Mshishi being successful. Mshishi is a reflection of that, from the dusty streets of Tembisa to playing for Vardos, to going through difficulties and then, I mean how many seasons as a top professional?'
By referencing Zwane's roots, Mokwena aligned him with the very essence of South African football, gritty, creative, and born on the streets. It's that street football spirit, he argued, that the nation must nurture and celebrate.
'These types of people have to succeed for football to be better and stronger because we have to get back to that culture of playing street football.'
Mokwena painted a powerful picture of Zwane's inspirational role for youth across the country. According to the former coach, players like Zwane are living proof to children in townships that success is attainable.
'Over and above whether or not he should be playing, I think that's always something that is up to the coach. But I would always take my hat off and give Mshishi big respect because he speaks to the South African child.
'The Neo who is in Tembisa instead of going into the corners and really being overcome by so many social ills, he gets motivated when he says 'hey I used to watch Themba Zwane playing on the street barefooted and there he is already going to the Club World Cup, Champions League', he serves as an inspiration for many.'
While he acknowledged that match-day decisions involve many unseen dynamics, Mokwena subtly hinted that, given the chance, he would have included Zwane in the final.
'I don't know [on playing Zwane] because the dynamics are completely different. But you know as a Sundowns coach, nine out of 10 times I played Mshishi.'
That statement says it all. For Mokwena, Zwane isn't just a footballer, he's a symbol of hope, a player with flair rooted in authenticity, and someone who deserved his place on the biggest stage.

Gavin Hunt fired up for fresh start with Durban City after SuperSport exit

Gavin Hunt is back in the game ands is plotting Durban City's top-flight survival ahead of their debut Betway Premiership season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix It would be stretching it to say he was like a kid in a sweet shop, but Gavin Hunt has certainly got his mojo back following an uncharacteristic enforced break from the game after being sacked by SuperSport United midway through last season. At the launch of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season in Sandton on Tuesday, the multiple championship-winning coach's excitement at returning to the coalface of the game he lives for was palpable. You fall in love with the game again.' Hunt has found his football rebirth at newly-promoted Durban City, having been sent out to pasture by SuperSport. So it's understandable that his passion for the game has been rekindled. 'Sometimes you fall out of love with the game when things happen like it happened,' he told the media contingent. 'But it is what it is. We could have made the top eight if I had stayed, but …' That chapter now closed, the man who led SuperSport to three successive league titles faces a new challenge — guiding the top-flight newcomers to safety and avoiding the fate of so many rookies: a swift return to the lower division. He is embracing the task with characteristic energy. 'It's a situation where you can really build something, go forward and try to build a team. Obviously you need a little bit of time, but in football sometimes there's no time.' Hunt believes he has a decent squad at his disposal — one he hopes to mould into a competitive outfit. 'There are a few young players; good players and proper players of a proper age. There's not too many old players, so we can build there.' Inevitably, he was quizzed about working with Ernst Middendorp, the club's technical director. Given both men's reputations for being strong-headed, many expect fireworks. 'It's different obviously, you know — but, ja — we are working well together. There's no problems. You can't say two bulls in a kraal. I've got to make a decision and obviously that decision falls on me. It is what it is. It's nothing unusual.' He dismissed suggestions that he should be watching his back given there's another coach in the mix: 'People who walk like that on the wall don't trust in their own abilities.' For now, survival is Durban City's clear goal — but with a coach as experienced and accomplished as Hunt at the helm, they surely can afford to dream a little bigger.

Mngqithi eyes explosive start with revamped Arrows squad

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi gives out instructions to defender and captain Gladwin Shitolo as they plan an energetic approach to the season. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Manqoba Mngqithi is banking on speed, energy, and a younger Golden Arrows outfit to power the club into a bold new era, as the veteran coach prepares for his first full season in his third stint in charge of Abafana Bes'thende. After narrowly missing out on the top eight last term, Arrows have undergone a sweeping transformation, with Mngqithi taking a surgical approach to lowering the average age of the squad and raising the ambition. The Durban-based side kick off their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign with a tricky away clash against newcomers Siwelele FC on Saturday at 8pm. 'Our team was very old and no wonder we had a lot of unnecessary injuries (last season), we are hoping to have a team that's more energetic and more interesting in terms of play.' He added that while Arrows have historically leaned on experience, the new generation brings a fresh dynamic that he hopes will result in a more entertaining and resilient side. 'This is a totally different team in profile and personnel so I'm just eager to see everything come together now.' The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor — who famously led Arrows to MTN8 glory in 2009 — is no stranger to building under pressure. But he admitted that unlike that championship run, this time pre-season results have given him reason to be optimistic. 'I remember when I won the MTN8 with Arrows, I didn't win a single game in pre-season but this time we've had a good pre-season so I'm upbeat about the new season.'

Tinkler gives update on Chiefs-linked Makgalwa

'If a club wants Keletso and makes the right offer, the club will not stand in his way,' said the Sekhukhune head coach. Sekhukhune head coach Eric Tinkler says the club are prepared to let winger Keletso Makgalwa leave – but only at the right price. ALSO READ: Nabi promises better Chiefs season The 28 year-old had a superb 2024/25 campaign at Sekhukhune, and was nominated for both the Footballer of the Season, and Players' Player of the Season Awards. Tinkler – 'Keletso has a job to do' The former Sundowns player scored 6 goals and provided 11 assists in 32 appearances for Babina Noko last season. Kaizer Chiefs have been linked with a move for Makgalwa but according to Tinkler, the club have yet to receive an acceptable offer from any team. 'Keletso has a job to do at Sekhukhune,' said Tinkler on Tuesday at the launch of the new Betway Premiership season in Sandton. 'Whether there was an offer or not it doesn't meant the criteria that the club wants. He is a professional footballer and he needs to move on now. 'I explained to Keletso – he had the top assists in the league last season. Now if he wants people to be serious he must do it again. 'If a club wants Keletso and makes the right offer, the club will not stand in his way. But if it is not beneficial to the club, why should the club release the player? It doesn't make sense.' A fine start Makgalwa already has one assist for Sekhukhune in the new campaign, Bradley Grobler heading home his corner in the 3-2 MTN8 quarterfinal win against TS Galaxy last weekend.
