Oman will host two days of celebration of science with special focus on AI on May 23 and 24 at the National University of Science and Technology, Al Hail Campus, as part of the 70th year of Indo-Oman diplomatic relations.
The annual science festival, organised by the Indian Science Forum (ISF), which is currently in its 18th edition, will see students from across the country vying with each other with their creative scientific ideas on the two days.
For those children with a nack for science, the Annual Science Fiesta 2025 is a flagship celebration of science and innovation aimed at fostering scientific knowledge, curiosity, and creativity among them. G V Srinivas, Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, will be the chief guest.
Organisers said that the two-day format reflects the increasing participation and growing popularity of the event, offering a broader platform for students to engage, compete, and showcase their scientific talents.
"The Annual Science Fiesta 2025 promises a dynamic lineup of activities, including competitions, exhibitions, workshops, and interactive sessions. Over the years, ISF has successfully organised a wide range of science events such as the Sastra Pratibha Contest, Science Quiz, Science Debate, On-the-Spot Presentations, Digital Symposiums, Poster Making and Science Exhibitions—all of which have garnered enthusiastic participation from students, educators, and parents across Oman," organisers said.
The highlight of this year's event will be the felicitation and award ceremony for the 18th Sastra Pratibha winners, taking place during the Science Fiesta.
A battery of great personalities in science and technology along with AI will address th3 children during the two days.
Dr. Monojit Choudhury, a renowned expert in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Professor at Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), Abu Dhabi, will be the Keynote Speaker.
Tariq al Barwani, a leading technology specialist and a prominent figure in Oman's IT sector, wi be the guest of honour while Syed Ahmad Salman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Indian Schools in Oman, wi be the guest of honour.
The presence of several dignitaries, academic leaders, and science enthusiasts will make this event a landmark celebration in Oman's academic calendar.
Also, the winners of the Sastra Pratibhas for 2025 were also announced:
Isha Fathima – Grade 5, Indian School Salalah
Advik Aby – Grade 6, Indian School Al Maabela
Richan Kumar – Grade 6, Indian School Bousher
Mithil Sadhasivam – Grade 7, Indian School Al Ghubra
Reha Mufeed – Grade 8, Indian School Nizwa
Nazish Shoukat Mukhari – Grade 9, Indian School Al Ghubra
Devraja Krishnan P – Grade 10, Indian School Al Seeb, are.the winners of Sasthra Prathibha.
A series of scientific events will mark the opening day of the celebrations on 23rd May 2025. On the second day, the science exhibition will be held during the morning hours, followed by the award ceremony and main function, which will commence at 2:00 PM.
There will be an interactive session with Prof. Monojit Choudhury, on 23rd May 2025 at 2:30 PM. This special session, designed for the student community from various schools, promises to be a highly enriching experience for our younger generation.
The event is being coordinated by Global Events. Dr. J. Retnakumar, Chairman, Suresh Akkammadathil, General Secretary, Latha Sreejith, General Coordinator, Gandhiraj, Treasurer, and Hala P. Jamal, Program Coordinator were also present at the announcement.

South Al Batinah Governorate launches summer programme for students

A'Rustaq: The activities of the summer program for male and female students in the schools of South Al Batinah Governorate commenced today across the governorate's wilayats. Organised by the Directorate General of Education in South Al Batinah, this year's programme is being held under the slogan 'My Summer: Connection and Growth" and includes diverse scientific, technical, artistic, literary, social, sports, entrepreneurial, scouting, and media training programs. Amna Mohammed Al Balushi, Director of the Vocational Guidance and Student Counseling Department and head of the summer programme's planning and organizing committee in South Al Batinah, stated that the program will run for two weeks with the participation of students from various schools across the governorate. She explained that the initiative aims to make productive use of the summer vacation by benefiting participants, instilling values of citizenship, equipping them with scientific and practical skills, nurturing talents, expanding their knowledge, and enhancing their cognitive, intellectual, creative, and life skills. Additionally, it seeks to reinforce national identity, loyalty to the nation and the Sultan, promote ethical and social values, and strengthen students' skills in information technology, scientific innovation, and entrepreneurship. The program also trains participants in scientific thinking, innovation, and creativity across multiple fields. Al Balushi added that the summer program also aims to foster cooperation, teamwork, self-confidence, and self-esteem while creating greater opportunities to discover and refine student talents. It supports their experiences and develops various skills by nurturing and embracing their ideas. Furthermore, it enhances collaboration and partnerships among institutions and highlights heritage and tourism aspects. She noted that this year's programme will feature a range of skill-based activities in cultural, literary, artistic, sports, economic, tourism, and media fields. These include artificial intelligence applications, virtual reality, mental arithmetic, 3D printing, robotics, modern technologies, mountain adventures, climbing, swimming, various sports activities, first aid, drone and smartphone photography basics, debates, cultural competitions, acting, and diverse games. Additionally, the program will cover green schools, recycling, palm frond crafts, pottery, ceramics, drawing, and more. These objectives will be achieved through the programme's four main pillars: values and cultural enrichment, applied sciences, awareness and guidance, and student activities—all fundamental components in shaping students' personalities and emphasizing the importance of values in their lives.

Sohar: A team of students from Naeim bin Masaud Basic Education School, North Al Batinah Governorate, created a device 'AEROCARBON' which helps in reducing carbon dioxide generated by car exhausts by over 50% using peridotite rock. The team has got the patent for this device. Under the supervision of Majid bin Khalfan Al Maqbali, students Omar bin Isa Al Barmani and Tamim bin Yousef Al Mamari, invented this device which made their project get the first place award in the environment field at the 36th International Invention, Innovation andTechnology Exhibition (ITEX 2025), held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. About the device, Al Barmani said that it is an environment-friendly invention aimed to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide ( CO2) generated by car exhausts through installation of a filter provided with particles of peridotite rock which transform carbon dioxide into calcium carbonate (CaCO3) when starting the car engine. Al Barmani said that the invention has undergone several steps and procedures including testing the sample before and after installing the same in the car by a certified laboratory at the SQU. The test results reaffirmed the success of the idea of the project in reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide from the air and the car exhausts, he added. Student Tamim Al Mamari spoke on the mechanism of participation in the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition, saying that the project was selected from among the projects of the teams taking part in the National Olympiad for Scientific Innovation, Robotics, and Arti ficial Intelligence. Majid bin Khalfan Al Maqbali, supervising the students' team taking part in the 36th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2025), said that the participation was an opportunity for exchange of expertise with the talents and innovators from other countries and for acquainting with the various projects in all scientific fields. He said that the exhibition represents an international platform for innovations , investors and businessmen interested in such fields of innovation and inventions.

Bangkok: The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI 2025 in Bangkok, a prestigious global platform for discussing ethical governance frameworks for advanced technologies. The forum runs until 26 June. A research paper submitted by Ayoub Mohammed Al Balushi, a lecturer at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, was selected among the best working papers presented at the research session accompanying the forum. The research paper received an honorary award from the forum's organizers, under the patronage of Thailand's Borava University, in recognition of its scientific originality and research vision, which contribute to advancing ethical AI practices. This accolade highlights Oman's active presence in global dialogues on the future of artificial intelligence and underscores the commitment of Omani academic institutions to promoting responsible scientific research in line with international trends.
