Sweetgreen abandons tiered loyalty for points-based program

Sweetgreen has launched a points-based loyalty program, SG Rewards, to replace Sweetpass, a tiered subscription program that consumers found too complicated, the company announced in a Thursday press release.
SG members earn 10 points for every dollar spent, and get access to unspecified perks and members-only deals. The points can be redeemed for entrees or sides, according to the press release.
CEO Jonathan Neman said during a February earnings call that the loyalty shift would help improve Sweetgreen's value proposition — a vital consideration as consumers remain price sensitive and economic confidence falters.
Sweetgreen's new program has been in the works since last year. The program was created in response to consumer desire for a more flexible rewards program, Neman said in a statement.
'SG Rewards offers more value, more flexibility and more ways to enjoy Sweetgreen — from everyday surprise & delight moments to members-only deals and special perks,' Neman said.
The Sweetpass program that preceded SG Rewards included consumer challenges and a subscription tier, which cost members $100 annually, that gave consumers $3 discounts on orders.
To promote adoption of the new program, the salad brand is offering some time-limited perks. Consumers who sign up and complete a purchase in April will receive 1,000 bonus points, equivalent to the amount earned after $100 in spend. Existing members who make an eligible purchase before April 11 will also receive 1,000 bonus points. Those bonus points are enough to earn an order of the company's air-fried Ripple Fries, which were introduced in March, according to the press release.
On the earnings call, Neman said he expected the new program — combined with investments in menu innovation and personalized offers — would result in transaction growth.
Sweetgreen managed positive comps and traffic last year, Chief Financial Officer Mitch Reback said on the brand's earnings call. Full-year traffic rose 2%, while same-store sales increased a total of 6%.
Those numbers were impressive, given the stagnation of same-store sales at many brands, but lagged behind some fast casual competitors, like Chipotle and Cava. Nonetheless, the brand still posted a $90 million net loss for fiscal 2024, according to its 10-K, though that was an improvement over its $113 million net loss in 2023.
While Sweetgreen is still the segment leader for fast casual salads, there are other chains looking to unseat it. Just Salad, in particular, has made moves that resemble Sweetgreen's in recent months. Just Salad added heartier options focused on the dinner daypart, debuting drive-thrus and raising $200 million in capital. If 2025 brings Sweetgreen strong traffic, the salad chain could separate itself from competitors, especially if consumer confidence in the category continues to crumble as a result of macroeconomic uncertainty.

This means that over the past quarter there has been an increase of insiders buying their shares of SG in relation to earlier this year. Up 84% and down 53%! 2 innovative growth stocks on my ISA watchlist

Like most investors, I have a watchlist of shares that I'm keeping an eye on. These might be high-quality growth stocks that are overpriced, and I'm waiting for them to come back down to earth (Palantir, for example). Or smaller firms where I'm still learning more about them. Here, I want to revisit two shares on my watchlist that have trodden very different paths this year. One has lost half its value, while the other has surged by over 80%. Which one looks more attractive to me right now? Let's find out. Robotic kitchens Let's start with the underperformer, which is Sweetgreen (NYSE: SG). The stock is down 53% year to date and around 72% since its 2021 IPO. Sweetgreen is a salad restaurant chain, with over 251 locations across the US. It sources the best quality ingredients from farmers and local suppliers, prioritising organic produce where possible. One thing I find interesting about the company is its Infinite Kitchens, which are restaurants where machines assemble salad bowls. Sweetgreen says these can produce 500 bowls per hour, about 50% faster than traditional human preparation. However, the stock plunged 31% in May after the firm released its Q1 earnings. In this, it reported slowing sales growth (a 5.4% rise to $166.3m). Same-store sales growth declined 3.1% year on year. For context, quarterly revenue and same-store sales growth was 26% and 5%, respectively, the year before. The problem here is that Sweetgreen isn't yet profitable (it lost $25m in Q1), so this sudden slowdown has spooked investors. In some ways, slowing sales isn't that unexpected. There's a lot of economic uncertainty and many consumers are eating out less due to budget constraints. Things might get worse, especially if food inflation takes hold. Still, management is aiming for 40 net new restaurant openings this year, with 20 featuring an Infinite Kitchen. High as a kite In contrast to Sweetgreen, Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) shares have skyrocketed 84% year to date, and 1,150% since April 2024! Two developments have been pushing the rocket company's shares higher. First, there's growing excitement about its Neutron rocket, which is due for its debut launch later this year. This is a medium‑lift, partially reusable rocket that may compete with SpaceX's Falcon 9. Second, investors are betting that Rocket Lab will benefit from the spectacular fallout between SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and President Trump. It could be a direct beneficiary if SpaceX misses out on new contract awards. My Foolish takeaway Stepping back, there's a lot of daft valuations around right now, which reminds me of 2021. With a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 51, Rocket Lab stock is clearly partaking in this speculation. It could fall back to earth spectacularly if the Neutron launch fails or the global economy enters a recession. If so, I'll take another look. Market cap 2024 revenue P/S ratio Rocket Lab $22.5bn $436m 51.6 Sweetgreen $1.7bn $677m 2.4 Meanwhile, Sweetgreen stock has fallen from $44 in November to $14 today, giving it a P/S multiple of 2.4. I think it could be a big winner from its current level, assuming the disruptive company can kickstart growth and use its robotic automation to become profitable. On this basis, it might be worth considering. But with declining comparable sales, I personally need a bit more convincing before I add it to my portfolio. Sweetgreen reports Q2 on 7 August. Chipotle's negative same-store sales streak continues

Dive Brief: Chipotle's same-store sales declined about 4% during Q2 2025, continuing a trend of negative growth that began in Q1, the company said in a Wednesday earnings report. The decrease was driven by a 4.9% drop in transactions, partially offset by a 0.9% increase in average check. While Q2 marks one of the brand's worst quarters for comparable sales growth since 2020, Chipotle expects flat comparable sales for the year, according to the report. Ongoing volatility with sales related to consumer spending led the chain to that projection, CFO Adam Rymer said on a Wednesday earnings call. Dive Insight: Despite a slowdown in May, sales momentum grew in June, Boatwright said during the earnings call, thanks to enhanced marketing initiatives and menu innovation. 'Exiting the quarter, we returned to a positive comp and transaction trends, which have continued into July,' he said, adding that consumer confidence also appeared to improve in June and July. During the second quarter, Chipotle's total traffic was up 0.7%, compared to a 0.5% increase in fast casual segment traffic, according to data. While traffic chainwide was up at Chipotle, visits per location fell 6%, according to which uses tens of millions of devices and machine learning to estimate visits to locations in the U.S. Comparatively, traffic was flat per location in the fast casual segment. measurements often yield slightly different, but still useful, results from company earnings reports. 'Some of the dip is likely due to lapping the successful Chicken al Pastor launch and to the Easter calendar shift, which made for a difficult comparison,' said. 'But the dip had narrowed to just -1.5% by June 2025, suggesting that the chain may be seeing the impacts of its latest menu additions.' Comparable sales fell during the first half of 2025. In mid-March, the company launched Chipotle Honey Chicken, which was the highest performing LTO in the company's history, and consumers included the protein in about a quarter of all orders. The company plans to expand its LTO cadence from two annually to three, Boatwright said. 'The guest feedback has been very positive,' Boatwright said. 'It will certainly be another LTO that we will bring back in the future.' The company also added its first dip in five years, Adobo Ranch, which is driving incremental transactions, Boatwright said, adding that the chain sees more opportunity to add sides and dips in the future, and already has a side that could launch in the fall. Chipotle has been boosting marketing, with the goal of doubling its reach on social media and streaming, Boatwright said. The goal of summer initiatives was to overcome summer lulls that the company has seen in the past few years, he added. The chain also launched its first 'Summer of Extras,' a three-month gamified program that offers extra points, badges and prizes to rewards members. New membership in the rewards program grew 14% year over year. 'We drove incremental frequency versus normal behavior across all frequency bands, including low frequency,' Boatwright said. 'Of the 5 million, 2 million were low-frequency users that are now engaging with the brand throughout summer on a more consistent basis.'
