Windows is 40 years old, and the latest iteration of the operating system, Windows 11, keeps making some big improvements. Most notably, Windows 11 for Copilot+ PCs is using AI to create some interesting — and controversial — features, such as Recall, which takes snapshots of your computer to create a searchable timeline of what you did.
Microsoft has also been revisiting some of its long-time Windows programs, and one program, which even predated the first iteration of the operating system, is getting an upgrade.
Notepad, the simple text editor that pops up whenever a Windows user clicks on a text file, will finally get some formatting options, according to a blog post from Microsoft. The app will soon have a formatting toolbar that allows the use of bold, italic, and hyperlinks for a document, as well as making a list and creating headings.
This simple formatting addition may seem a bit odd to include after all these years, but Windows users tend to use Notepad because it doesn't have any formatting options. Those people simply want to edit text without dealing with different fonts or styles.
The Notepad update is rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11 as of Friday.

Notepad was largely untouched by Microsoft for a long time, but in recent years, the company has made more use of it. Back in 2021, it and Microsoft Paint received a design overhaul to make them more modern. Notepad also received an update on May 22, enabling users to write new content using generative AI. These changes to Notepad could be a way for Microsoft to replace its free word-processing program, Wordpad, which was retired in 2023.
Other Windows programs receiving new upgrades this month include the Snipping Tool and Paint. Both will incorporate AI with the Snipping Tool, using AI to create the perfect screenshot and noting the exact color values on whatever is on your screen, while Paint will generate stickers based on a prompt.
What could be the biggest change to Windows 11 is the change to the crash screen. The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) that appears whenever a severe issue occurs requiring Windows to restart might soon become the Green Screen of Death (GSoD). The GSoD is currently available for Windows Insiders and offers fewer details about what happened to cause the restart. Still, the change will offer a slightly less panic-inducing reaction with the color change.

Who could win and lose on tighter Trump AI controls? UBS weighs in

-- UBS analysts warn that the reported new U.S. export restrictions on AI chips to Malaysia and Thailand could create turbulence for tech investors, as the Trump administration aims to block China's indirect access to high-performance semiconductors. 'The Trump administration is preparing new restrictions on AI chip exports to Malaysia and Thailand,' UBS noted, citing Bloomberg, 'with the aim of preventing advanced processors from reaching China via third countries.' Malaysia is said to now account for nearly 12% of NVIDIA's global sales, making it a key AI data center hub. The proposed Commerce Department rule would target chipmakers like NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA). UBS highlighted that 'new regulations, on the heels of the June rally, could trigger volatility,' especially as recent tech gains were driven more by 'price-to-earnings multiple expansion than by positive earnings revisions.' With companies now in their earnings blackout period, UBS believes 'there is less room for any misses in second-quarter results.' Despite the regulatory overhang, UBS sees some potential winners. 'American data center operators will still be allowed to import US AI chips,' meaning that U.S. hyperscalers like Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) can continue regional expansion. UBS added that 'Malaysian companies primarily serving US-backed projects should remain relatively insulated.' However, firms building data centers 'speculatively or targeting Chinese demand may be more exposed to order cancelations or project delays.' UBS also noted that 'data center stocks in Southeast Asia may be more sensitive in the near term to headline risk.' Overall, UBS remains constructive on the long-term outlook. 'We believe the robust secular trends in AI will continue to drive long-term gains in the tech sector,' the analysts wrote, even as they advise a 'balanced portfolio stance within tech and the AI value chain.' Goldman Sachs bets on generative AI and empowers ‘AI natives'

Good morning. Goldman Sachs, one of the world's leading investment banks, is paving the way for the next generation of finance leaders to shape the future of AI in the workplace. The bank hires about 2,500 to 3,000 interns each summer. For the 2025 internship class, Goldman received more than 360,000 applications—a 15% increase from last year, Fortune reported. With an acceptance rate of just 0.7% this year, the program is highly competitive and serves as a pipeline for permanent positions. Goldman has a strong sense of what young finance professionals want in an employer, including a focus on technology. In a new Fortune opinion piece, Marco Argenti, Goldman's chief information officer, argues that companies should empower young professionals with AI skills to help shape strategy. While some predict agentic AI—autonomous systems that can perform tasks and make independent decisions—will displace junior roles, Argenti says the reality is more nuanced. Early-career workers are more essential than ever because they are 'AI natives,' having grown up with generative AI and being uniquely equipped to adapt to and shape its future. 'Understanding how we nurture a generation of AI natives—and equip them with the right skills and tools to be leaders and not passive observers of this transformation—will be critical to defining the future of work, and society at large,' Argenti writes. He continues: 'Their instincts, creativity, and adaptability will determine how successfully we integrate AI into our organizations, not just as a tool but as a partner. The challenge ahead is beyond technological; it is cultural, educational, and distinctively human.' With every major technological shift, a new generation of leaders emerges, especially entrepreneurs whose fluency with AI is reshaping the business landscape. Argenti notes: 'Consider the CEOs of companies like Devin [AI], Windsurf, and Scale AI—all AI natives. Could one of them be the next Bill Gates or Michael Dell?' Goldman recently launched its GS AI Assistant, an internal AI program that enables employees to interact with large language models securely firewalled within the company, reducing the risk of sensitive data leaks. The AI will be used for efficiency gains, the company said in an internal memo, Fortune reported. Research shows that AI adoption among desk workers is accelerating. According to Salesforce's latest Slack Workforce Index, a survey of 5,000 global desk workers found that daily AI users are 64% more productive and 81% more satisfied with their jobs than non-users. More than 95% of workers have used AI to perform tasks they previously lacked the skills to do themselves, and workers are now 154% more likely to use AI agents to enhance their performance and creativity rather than simply automate tasks, according to the findings. Notably, millennials are emerging as the leading AI power users at work: 30% say they thoroughly understand AI agents, surpassing even Gen Z (22%). As AI continues to redefine the workplace, companies like Goldman Sachs highlight the potential benefits of empowering AI natives.
