Thinking of giving your baby Tamil name? Don't fret, TN's got your back
The announcement came in response to a suggestion made on social media platform 'X' by Nithan Chitrarasu, a DMK supporter.
Quoting Stalin's earlier remarks at a wedding ceremony, Nithan Chitrarasu said that while many parents wish to give their children Tamil names, they often struggle to find suitable options with meanings due to the lack of a dedicated resource. The chief minister, who had advised a newly-wed couple at the wedding of Mylapore MLA D Velu's daughter to name their future children in Tamil, acknowledged the suggestion and promised action.
Following Stalin's announcements, the Tamil Virtual Academy said a special website featuring Tamil names and their meanings will soon be added to its digital library of the academy.

Tamil Nadu Cops Seek Public Help In Child Rape Case, Post Photos Of Suspect
Chennai: The local police in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district have released images of an unidentified man and appealed to the public for information, nearly a week after a 10-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly sexually assaulted. The disturbing incident has ignited serious concerns over child safety and the efficacy of protection systems in the state. CCTV footage, which has since circulated, shows the man stalking the minor girl before forcibly lifting her, according to initial police accounts. The police have formally registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and multiple special teams have been formed to trace the perpetrator, though no arrests have been made yet. "We have formed special teams and expect a breakthrough soon," a senior police officer told NDTV. The Tiruvallur Police had shared pictures of the suspect on their official social media, urging public assistance to identify him: The suspect in the photos/video is involved in a heinous crime of sexually assaulting a child. It is requested to communicate any information pertaining to him on 9952060948 — Thiruvallur District Police (@TNTVLRPOLICE) July 20, 2025 Child rights activists have voiced profound alarm, highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers children face in public spaces and the existing gaps in surveillance, community vigilance, and awareness. "Every time a child is harmed, it's not just a law and order issue - it's a failure of the system meant to protect them," said an advocate who preferred to remain anonymous. The incident has also drawn political condemnation, with the AIADMK slamming the ruling DMK saying "There is no safety for women under the DMK rule". Former state BJP chief K Annamalai had earlier urged immediate action, warning that the suspect's freedom poses a continued threat to society. The crime comes amid a worrying rise in offenses against women and children across the state. The state police and the ruling DMK maintain that stringent action is being taken in each case. The authorities have pointed to recent fast-tracked trials and convictions - such as the life sentence awarded in the Anna University sexual assault case and another in which a pregnant woman was assaulted on a moving train - as evidence of their commitment to delivering justice.

Chief Minister Stalin, his Cabinet colleagues focused on their own welfare: Palaniswami
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his Cabinet colleagues were only focused on their own welfare and have been ignoring the public good, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami alleged on Sunday. Terming the DMK government a 'failure model', Mr. Palaniswami claimed that the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues were focused on 'looting the State'. In a statement, Mr. Palaniswami, who is currently on a State-wide tour as part of the Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhaghathai Meetpom political campaign, alleged that the DMK government was only continuing with its hollow promises. The people of Tamil Nadu have realised the true face of the DMK government, which made hollow promises and was inefficient in its administration, and have become prepared to remove it from power, he contended. Mr. Palaniswami said that during his visit to over 30 Assembly constituencies during the roadshow since July 7, he had met about 12.5 lakh people. Farmers, farm labourers, weavers, fishermen, entrepreneurs, youth, unemployed graduates, traders, doctors, and the working class, were among them, he added. 'All of them shared their regret about the failure model of the DMK government during the past 52 months,' Mr. Palaniswami claimed.

DMK treating Vanniyar community as mere vote bank during elections: Anbumani Ramadoss
PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday charged the ruling DMK of treating the Vanniyar community merely as a vote bank during elections. He claimed the party, its president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin were against Vanniyars and social justice. Leading a demonstration at the municipal ground in Villupuram demanding the implementation of 10.5 % reservation for Vanniyars, Mr. Anbumani alleged that Mr. Stalin betrayed the Vanniyar community by refusing to provide internal reservations for Vanniyars within the MBC quota. Though 1208 days have passed since the Supreme Court struck down the Vanniyar reservations, the ruling DMK has been consistently misleading the people on this issue, he claimed. The Apex court has observed that reservations for the Vanniyars or any other community can be given based on quantifiable data. Mr. Anbumani said the plea for reservation for Vanniyars had not been fulfilled for the last 45 years. As many as 21 persons lost their lives during the struggle demanding exclusive reservation for Vanniyars in 1989. Of them, 15 were from Villupuram district. The former Union minister recalled that he and his father, and party founder S. Ramadoss, had met the Chief Minister on several occasions to press for the implementation of 10.5% reservation, but in vain. 'The DMK and the Chief Minister betrayed the PMK by promising to give 10.5% internal reservation, and after four years, now Mr. Stalin is saying that reservation could be given only after the Union Government conducts the caste census. Mr. Stalin again and again said this lie while States like Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, and Bihar conducted caste surveys, and now again Karnataka has announced they are going to conduct a second caste survey. While these States have the right to conduct the surveys, why does Tamil Nadu not have that power?' Mr. Anbumani questioned. Of its total representatives, the DMK has 23 MLAs and five Members of Parliament from the Vanniyar community. 'Did the Dravidian party implement any welfare schemes for the upliftment of the community?' he asked. Stating not even one vote should go to the DMK in the 2026 elections, Mr. Anbumani said the time to unseat the DMK government has come. Mr. Anbumani said the party would soon launch a jail bharo agitation across the State in support of its demand. If the DMK government fails to enact a law and ensure 10.5% reservation for Vanniyars, the party would intensify its protest and hold a road roko agitation in the second phase.
