The curious case of a UP district that beats Japan in income

, so much so that it can be compared to Japan on certain metrics.
GB Nagar has a
per capita income
of ₹10.17 lakh, more than 10 times the state average and comparable to Japan in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms, Times of India's Richa Gandhi has reported.
According to the
UP Economic Survey
, GB Nagar's GDP stood at ₹2.63 lakh crore in 2023–24, contributing over 10% of the state's total output. That's twice the size of Lucknow's economy, and larger than the entire GDP of Himachal Pradesh.
Per capita income: A global comparison
Viewed through a purchasing power parity (PPP) lens, GB Nagar's per capita income matches that of Japan, placing it in a league far above the rest of the state. In contrast:
Lucknow's per capita income: ₹2.16 lakh, close to India's national average.

Top 5 districts (GB Nagar, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Agra, Kanpur) contribute over 25% of the state's GDP.
Bottom 5 together account for less than 2.5%.

Even Lucknow, the state capital, trails far behind Noida in per capita terms. GB Nagar's income per person is five times higher than Lucknow, and 23 times higher than Pratapgarh, the poorest district by this measure.
While GB Nagar thrives, the bottom five districts, Shravasti, Chitrakoot, Sant Kabir Nagar, Auraiya, and Bhadohi, collectively generate less than Kanpur Nagar alone. Shravasti's GDP is just ₹8,593 crore, 30 times smaller than GB Nagar's.
Why GB Nagar is an outlier
GB Nagar's economic dominance may be a result of its proximity to Delhi, planned infrastructure, private sector investment, and sustained focus on industrial and IT growth.
The district is also a hub for real estate, electronics, data centres, and logistics, contributing to rapid income growth.

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University has issued disciplinary notices to the former members of its students' union ( JNUSU ), imposing fines of up to Rs 15,000 for their participation in a hunger strike on campus earlier this year against a controversial fine policy introduced by the administration. The notice also mentions the university has taken a "somewhat lenient view" considering the students' academic future. They have been asked to submit the fines within 10 days from the issuance of the notice. In March this year, a hunger strike led by JNUSU was held at the Dean of Students Welfare's office over various demands, including withdrawal of the university's recently notified disciplinary rules that prescribe penalties of up to Rs 20,000 and possible rustication for protests, "anti-national" slogan shouting, and other forms of dissent.

US trade deal: India won't compromise on national interest to meet deadline, says Goyal
NEW DELHI: India will enter into a trade agreement with the US only if its interests are protected and it is able to sustain a tariff advantage over its competitors, while prioritising the interests of farmers, commerce and industry minister said Friday. But we are not working towards any specific deadlines, we are working towards national interest,' he told TOI in an interview, in a reference to the July 9 deadline set by the US President Donald Trump for wrapping up trade agreements. Trump had imposed reciprocal tariffs on nearly 100 countries but agreed to a 90-day pause that is to end Tuesday. India was slapped with 26% reciprocal tariffs. There is uncertainty over whether India and the US can agree to an early tranche or a mini deal before that even as a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement is negotiated by Fall (Sept-Oct) after a meeting between Trump and PM Narendra Modi. For India, lowering tariffs on farm products, such as maize and soybean, as well as dairy products is a concern. While Goyal did not get into specifics, he said that India would not compromise the interests of the farm and dairy sectors. 'We take every concern into account. India was hoping for duty concessions in leather, footwear, textiles and some auto parts in return for reducing levies on automobiles and American whiskey. Besides, India wants to be insulated from future tariff adjustments, including sectoral actions, while getting the benefit of lower duties compared with countries such as China and Vietnam. There are only a handful of countries including the UK, China and Vietnam that have so far agreed to trade deals with the US.

In a significant policy shift, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to discontinue the use of the least cost (L1) bidding system for awarding consultancy contracts to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs), reported TOI. All highway implementing agencies under the ministry, including the National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ), will now adopt a system where bidders are evaluated based on the highest technical score (T1), with a fixed consultancy fee , as per the TOI report. Under the new model, the consultancy fee will be predetermined by the agency, and companies will be selected based on their technical capabilities and track record. The change comes amid growing concerns about the deteriorating quality of project preparation due to consultants securing projects at extremely low and unsustainable rates.
