"Life of Pi" play brings new adaptation of iconic tale to Denver Center for the Performing Arts
"Life of Pi was a book written in 2005 by Yann Martel, which has seen a lot of adaptations across its life," said Taha Mandviwala, the lead actor in the tour.
The story follows the journey of a boy from India who was raised at a zoo. His family flees the country due to political unrest, taking their exotic animals with them on a boat.
"There are many differences between the book and the stage production," said Jon Hoche, one of the directors of the tour.
The story follows the boy's survival journey after the boat he was on crashes, leaving him stranded on a life raft with several exotic animals.
"Translating page to stage, and the discrepancy between the book and the stage play, is understanding the shift in audience," Mandviwala said. "When you have a book, there is a lot more room for nuance, there is a lot more room for details and there is a lot more time to let that marinate."
However, the live production coming to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts requires the show to be transformed into a two hour stage play.
Without giving away the specifics of the show, it is important to note that it is told in a different order than that of the book. For example, details that were left toward the end of the book are what the play opens with.
"There are a lot of creative liberties that are involved in this," Mandviwala said.
"It is like nothing else (audiences) have seen on stage. It has the epic scale of a musical but the heart of a kitchen sink drama," Hoche said. "It has really become this global phenomenon that the book and movie did as well."

The star-studded Make the World Better Concert Weekend takes over FDR Park this weekend. On Friday, catch singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus with Hop Along and Jay Som starting at 5:30 p.m. It's sure to be a special night with Dacus, who previously lived in Philly and has said her song "Modigliani" was inspired by art at the Barnes Foundation, one of her favorite museums. Her latest album, "Forever is a Feeling," was released in March. Dacus also performs as part of the band Boy Genius with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. General admission tickets start at $75 online. Remi Wolf will take center stage on Sunday as part of the concert weekend at FDR Park. The "Disco Man" singer will be joined by Annie DiRusso for the show, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Prices to see Remi Wolf and Annie DiRusso on Sunday start at $79. Start your Saturday with some morning miles and music as Diplo joins the fun at FDR Park. The Temple grad is bringing Diplo's Run Club to Philly for the first time. The shows will be Dave Matthews Band's 49th and 50th time playing Freedom Mortgage Pavilion. Dave Matthews has played the venue solo once in his touring career. The band, active since 1991, has sold over 32 million albums in the U.S. Sam Hunt loves a "House Party," but this Friday, he's calling all country music fans for a night out in Atlantic City. Known for smash hits like "Body Like A Back Road," "Take Your Time," and "Leave the Night On," Sam Hunt is bringing his 2025 summer tour to the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City Friday night. Fellow country musician Austin Williams will kick off the show ahead of Sam Hunt. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets start at $105. The Delaware State Fair is going out with a bang this weekend, as it closes out its 10-day event extravaganza. The annual celebration is the longest-running and largest fair in Delmarva, beginning back in 1919, according to the fair's website. The final weekend of this family-friendly festival will surely not disappoint. Rapper T.I. and country duo Big & Rich are both scheduled to perform. Additionally, both Friday and Saturday feature a 12-hour lineup of activities for guests to choose from throughout the day. A full lineup of the final weekend's activities is available online. The Delaware State Fair opens at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

CBS Colorado speaks to U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds pilot ahead of Cheyenne Frontier Days performance
After taking a one year break due to airport maintenance, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are returning to Cheyenne Frontier Days Saturday. The iconic team, known to have some of the most talented pilots in the world, will perform a show in Cheyenne as part of the CFD festivities. Ahead of the performance over F.E. Warren Air Base, the Thunderbirds invited CBS Colorado to watch their arrival and practice over Cheyenne. Then, pilot Ian Lee spoke in front of his F-16 aircraft, numbered three, on the tarmac. "Being a Thunderbird is great," said Lee, a Lt. Colonel. With the call sign of "Bear," Lee said his team often flies at more than 400 miles per hour while completing maneuvers. "The closest we get is about 18 inches apart," Lee said. "That is definitely where we have to have trust in our teammates." While the Thunderbirds do more than 60 shows a year, Cheyenne Frontier Days holds a special place in the history of the team. "This is something we have been doing for an extremely long time.," Lee said. "This was actually the Thunderbirds' first civilian air demonstration we did back in 1953. So it is very exciting to be here, and it is nice to keep that tradition going." Since then, the Thunderbirds have performed at nearly every CFD experience since. In 2024, the team had to skip the tradition due to ongoing runway construction at Cheyenne's airport, which the military shares. Lee said he also, coincidentally, happened to take 2024 off from being with the Thunderbirds. However, like the team, he is back with them in Cheyenne now. Lee said, with the show being July 26, the team plans to spend some of their time in Cheyenne attending the iconic Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. "I think the first rodeo I had ever been to was here back in 2021. It is a lot of fun," Lee said. "It was a lot more fun than I was expecting. So I am a fan." The Thunderbirds have two types of shows they regularly perform, known as high and low altitude shows. In order to perform the show with the most loops, or the high altitude show, clouds must be clear due to safety. If the weather holds out as they hope, the team expects to perform the high altitude show in Cheyenne. However in 2023, they had the same plan. But cloud coverage forced them to change to a low altitude show at the last minute. Lee said, no matter what, the crowd will be given a visually and audibly fun experience. "Especially after we light the afterburners, you can definitely feel that from the ground -- the power of the jets -- which is really great," Lee said.
