
How switching your coffee for green tea may help prevent dementia
The researchers looked at older people with coffee and tea drinking habits and found a 'significant association' between those who drank more green tea and lower cerebral white matter lesions - which are linked with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
The study published in NPJ Science of Food looked at the data of about 10,000 older Japanese people who were involved in an ongoing observational study on dementia. The participants had undergone MRI scans and filled out dietary surveys.
The researchers said high blood pressure (hypertension) was considered to be the 'most important risk factor' for those lesions, and green tea has been reported to reduce blood pressure.
Green tea also has less caffeine per cup than coffee, which may also help, the researchers said.
'Green tea consumption may contribute to white matter lesion reduction by improving blood pressure,' they added.
'Moreover, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee, which negatively affects blood pressure, thus suggesting that green tea may have a more beneficial impact on white matter lesions.'
A separate study recently found that drinking coffee in the morning could have more health benefits than drinking it throughout the day, including a reduced risk of heart disease and death.
Green tea is made from the leaves and buds of the Camellia Sinesis plant and contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as well as caffeine. A cup of green tea typically contains 25-45mg of caffeine.
Coffee, made from the seeds of a wide variety of coffee plants, also contains antioxidants. Depending on how it is brewed can contain about 100mg of caffeine.
The researchers stressed the study had limitations: 'First, we only investigated green tea and coffee intake when consumed as beverages and did not account for the amount contained in snacks.
'Importantly, there was also no information on how green tea was brewed, leading to potential variations in the content of bioactive substances.'
The researchers added the study only focused on the drinking habits of Japanese individuals, so it was not clear whether similar trends could be observed in other countries.
'In conclusion, this study revealed that increased green tea consumption was associated with reduced cerebral white matter lesions,' the researchers said.
'Given that cerebral white matter lesions are closely related to vascular dementia and AD, our findings indicate that drinking green tea, especially three or more glasses per day, may help prevent dementia.
'Nevertheless, further prospective longitudinal studies and basic research are needed to validate our results.'

But while it's tempting to give into every craving, scientists say you could be setting yourself up for a horrible nights sleep, and even worse, cognitive decline as you age. Scientists from Canada found eating dairy before bed could cause vivid and disturbing nightmares, which can disrupt sleep - and a lack of sufficient quality sleep has been linked to obesity, mood disorders and impaired cognitive function, including memory issues and even an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The team found a 'strong association' between nightmares, food allergies and lactose intolerance, potentially because gas and stomach pain during the night affects people's dreams. The researchers surveyed about 1,000 people asking them about their sleep time and quality, and their dreams and nightmares. They also asked them if they believed there was any association between dreams and certain foods. About 40 percent of people believed that eating late at night or eating specific foods affected their sleep, while 25 percent thought certain foods negatively impacted their sleep. Results revealed that people who ate less healthy diets were more likely to have bad dreams and less likely to remember them. Dr Tore Nielsen of Université de Montréal and lead author of the article, said: 'Nightmare severity is robustly associated with lactose intolerance and other food allergies. These new findings imply that changing eating habits for people with some food sensitivities could alleviate nightmares. They could also explain why people so often blame dairy for bad dreams.' Researchers looked at the survey answers from 1,082 students at MacEwan University. Nearly 25 percent said certain foods worsened their sleep and 20 percent said certain foods improved sleep. Approximately 5.5 percent of respondents reported food affected their dreams. About 31 percent of people blamed disturbing dream changes on desserts and sweets and 22 percent blamed foods that contain dairy, according to the paper published in the journal Frontiers. While people with food allergies and gluten intolerance reported poor sleep, worse sleep perceptions were tied to lactose intolerance. It's known that late-night snacking disrupts shut eye. By eating foods close to bedtime, it causes your digestive system to continue to be active while the rest of your body is trying to sleep, which leads to a night of tossing and turning. Dairy is one of the biggest culprits of stealing sleep as it contains lactase and other nutrients that trigger metabolic activity telling the body to stay alert and active. In doing so, this disrupts REM sleep - rapid eye movement sleep, which is when deep sleep and dreams occur - making brain function and memory worsen if the cycle continues. The idea that cheese - or dairy in general - causes nightmares has been investigated before, as those who are lactose-intolerant and eat dairy products at night have reported being awakened by gastrointestinal issues that cause discomfort and cramps while sleeping. Dairy also contains large amounts of tryptophan, which actually makes people more tired, but this drowsiness increases the likelihood for vivid and nightmare-like dreams. And frightening nightmares then lead to disrupted sleep, anxiety, fear and even PTSD. 'Nightmares are worse for lactose intolerant people who suffer severe gastrointestinal symptoms and whose sleep is disrupted,' said Dr Neilson. 'This makes sense because we know that other bodily sensations can affect dreaming. Nightmares can be very disruptive, especially if they occur often, because they tend to awaken people from sleep in a dysphoric state. They might also produce sleep avoidance behaviors. Both symptoms can rob you of restful sleep.' Experimental psychology expert Dr Dana Smith said there is limited data on how cheese specifically affects dreams and nightmares but, writing for Nature's blog Mind Read, posited that bacteria found in blue cheeses is similar to those found in magic mushrooms and may have similar psychoactive effects. These include tyramine and tryptamine. Tyramine aids in releasing neurotransmitters like adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine, all of which can cause unconscious excitement and disturbance while sleeping. And tryptamine is a common precursor to serotonin, which may be associated with hallucinogenic effects of magic mushrooms. However, it is still up for debate how much of these are actually in cheese to cause symptoms. The general guideline is seven to nine hours of quality sleep and a lack of or interrupted sleep can have serious side effects down the line. In 2024 research, scientists at Yale School of Medicine examined the brains of 40,000 adults to understand how sleep affects brain health. They found that poor sleep is 'significantly correlated with' brain injuries that doctors know foreshadow stroke and dementia years before their onset. Poor sleep can also increase the risk of heart disease, obesity, dementia and depression. To avoid dairy-induced nightmares and sleep chaos, experts advise cutting down on late night snacking, and indulging in dairy or food consumption two hours prior to climbing into bed.

'Years of over-doing it in the gym caused my spinal leak and brain bleed' Linzi Todd discovered her spine was leaking fluids after ignoring throbbing headaches An ultra-fit personal trainer dismissed her throbbing headaches for fatigue - until doctors discovered her spine was leaking fluid thanks to 'years of over-doing it in the gym'. Linzi Todd was attending a two-day training camp to teach boot camp style fitness earlier this year when she experienced tinnitus and a throbbing headache. The 40-year-old decided to struggle through the pain, putting her symptoms down to feeling 'overtired'. But the mum-of-one grew more concerned when her pounding headaches persisted, prompting her to visit A&E for tests. There, Linzi was told she had 'low pressure' in her head and referred for an MRI scan, which revealed a large bleed and blood clot on her brain in May. Terrified, Linzi feared she may not survive and said her goodbyes to her husband and daughter in the hospital waiting room. Based on the size of Linzi's bleed, doctors were stunned that the mum was able to form a sentence - let alone have carried on with normal life unaware of the significant bleed on her brain. In hospital, Linzi was informed that the bleed had been caused by a leak of her cerebrospinal fluid in her spine - a clear fluid that protects the brain and spine. Now, Linzi is hopeful the leak and clot will heal naturally - but is urging others to always advocate for their own health if they have any concerns. Linzi, who lives in Northampton, Northamptonshire, said: "I was doing a training camp to teach outdoor bootcamp fitness and went to bed that evening and developed tinnitus, which I'd never had in my life. I woke up the next morning with a really banging headache. I popped a couple of pills, felt unwell but cracked on. "I rang the doctors and they put it down to labyrinthitis because I felt dizzy as well. I just thought maybe my body was tired. I'm not the type of person that gets sick. I've always been really fit and healthy. "But the headaches persisted. I would wake up with intense throbbing in my head as soon as I got up every morning. It felt like the worst brain freeze and only lying down and painkillers would give me some relief." As her headaches worsened, Linzi visited A&E in March where she was told she had 'low pressure' in her head and advised to increase her caffeine and water intake. After undergoing an MRI scan, Linzi was at work when she received an urgent phone call from her neurologist instructing her to come to hospital immediately after doctors spotted a 17mm blood clot and substantial bleed covering more than half of the right side of her brain. Linzi, who is no longer a PT and now works at a mental health company, said: "I got a phone call while I was at work from the neurologist who said 'where are you right now?' and told me to get to A&E immediately and that I had a very serious condition. He said he could see an acute subdural hematoma on your brain, which is very serious and a very large blood clot. "He said we don't often see bleeds of this size in women of your age without any head trauma and it was a medical emergency. I was Googling what this condition was and it said there was a 25% survival rate. I thought, am I going to die? Do I need to plan my funeral? "It was so traumatic. I had to say goodbye to my husband and daughter. I didn't know if I was going to see them again or not. Doctors were baffled by how I was presenting based on my scans and what they found. I was high risk of a stroke and seizure, yet I was passing all of their cognitive and reflex tests. "It's normally found in boxers, rugby players, horse-riders - someone that has had a trauma to the head. I was walking around with that in my brain and it could've killed me." Linzi was later told the bleed on her brain was caused by fluid leaking from her spine, which she suspects may have been caused by years of intense exercise. Linzi is due to have an epidural blood patch to help seal the leak and aid the clot and bleed in her brain to naturally disperse. Linzi said doctors said the leak can happen to fit and active people who 'overdo it' and put too much pressure on their spine, which is what they believe may have happened to her. Linzi said: "There's no real way of knowing what exactly has caused this. They [doctors] believe I may have overdone it during exercise and caused a tear in my dura - however I wouldn't have felt this happen and only the symptoms in my head later on. "Because I've been consistently active, it's just consistently worn down and created this leak. It's just unlucky it's happened to me. I don't want anyone to be put off exercise because it's a very rare thing to happen but it's the only logical reasoning for why this happened. "I never thought a bad bout of headaches would result in this and nearly three weeks in hospital. I had to push every single step of the way. It would've had a different ending if I hadn't pushed as much as I did with doctors. I absolutely would've died. "I just knew there was something wrong. I always tell others to listen to their own body and gut. Push to get seen and get answers. You'd rather get a normal result than leave it and it be too late."

'I dismissed symptoms as baby brain before husband's horrified look'
Amy Dyer, 37, dismissed her extreme tiredness and low concentration as simply part of life as a parent New mum, Amy Dyer, 37, thought her severe fatigue and headaches were 'baby brain' until a terrifying nocturnal seizure led to the grim discovery of a brain tumour. Initially thinking that her lack of energy and difficulty focusing were just part and parcel of parenthood, Amy's world changed dramatically after the alarming episode in her sleep resulted in her being diagnosed with a low-grade astrocytoma. Despite undergoing an awake craniotomy in June 2023, it was later found that Amy's tumour was an aggressive grade 3 astrocytoma. Her recovery journey included physiotherapy, occupational therapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, culminating in a clear scan in June 2025. Amy, from Cullompton, Devon, who is a computer science teacher, said: "I'd had our little boy and was juggling life as a mum and teaching. I thought I had what everyone calls 'baby brain' tiredness, low concentration, feeling foggy. "It all just felt like part of motherhood, especially after having a baby. I didn't go to the doctors because I genuinely thought it was just postnatal exhaustion, maybe low iron or fatigue. Nothing unusual." However, in December 2022, the severity of her symptoms escalated, including "terrible" headaches, diminished attention span, and ultimately a seizure during sleep, prompting an urgent visit to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Recalling the distressing signs, she said: "I started having headaches, terrible ones that would wake me up in the middle of the night. Looking back, I realise my concentration levels were much lower than they should have been. "I was startled to wake up to my sister, Chloe and husband, Will, staring at me in horror, I thought they were joking, how could I have had a seizure if I was asleep?" At the hospital, she experienced another seizure and a CT scan uncovered a space-occupying lesion in her brain. She was immediately put on anti-seizure medication and scheduled for an MRI scan. Amy said: "One minute I was in bed, the next, I was in hospital, facing brain scans and big decisions. It was dreadful." Subsequent tests led to Amy being sent to University Hospital Plymouth for a biopsy, and in May 2023, she received a diagnosis of low-grade astrocytoma, a form of brain tumour. Confronted with the choice between observation or surgery, Amy opted for an awake craniotomy in June 2023. Amy said: "I heard the words tumour and my world changed. I didn't want to wait to see if the tumour would develop, so I chose surgery. "The risks scared me: seizures, complications, even death. But I knew I couldn't leave it and risk it becoming inoperable." On June 8, 2023, Amy faced the operation at University Hospital Plymouth. The surgical team initially kept her conscious to ensure her brain function remained intact, instructing her to move her left hand, before proceeding under general anaesthetic to finish the surgery. The operation was deemed successful and, after five days, Amy was discharged from the hospital. "Thankfully, I didn't lose mobility on my left side," she said. "They weren't able to tell me the percentage of the tumour they removed, but I'm happy they felt the operation was a success." Subsequent tests showed that the tumour was an aggressive grade 3 astrocytoma. "They sent it away to be tested and found out that it was in fact a grade 3 astrocytoma," she said. "Doctors asked to keep some of the tumour to aid research which I agreed." Since her diagnosis, she has been through physiotherapy, occupational therapy, 33 rounds of radiotherapy and oral chemotherapy. Amy now undergoes regular scans every four months. In June 2025, she was elated to receive a clear scan, marking three years since her initial symptoms appeared. Amy hailed this as "great news". Reflecting on her journey, she said: "I've learned to take life slower. Before, I was on a hamster wheel. Now I value people, time and memories more than possessions. I haven't had a seizure since the first two in 2022 and I received a clear scan for June 2025, which is great news." Amy is currently engaged in fundraising efforts for Brain Tumour Research by taking part in the 88 Squats a Day in July Challenge, aiming to gather funds for research into a cure. Katrina Jones, head of community fundraising at Brain Tumour Research, said: "Amy's strength and determination in sharing her story is truly inspiring, by opening up about her experience, she's not only raising vital awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours but also helping to highlight the urgent need for more funding into research. We're incredibly grateful for her support and proud to have her as part of our fundraising community."
