The arrival of running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider from Penn State has already paid dividends for Notre Dame, and more good news could be on the way. The Fighting Irish extended an offer to elite 2027 wide receiver Matthew Gregory in early June, and there is positive momentum for his potential commitment. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound five-star prospect is ranked as the No. 39 overall player nationally in his class by the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and he has several offers outside of ND, including Penn State, Florida State and Maryland. But he has praised the relationships he has made across the Irish coaching staff in a report from Kyle Kelly. During his sophomore season in 2024 at Owen J. Roberts (Pottstown, PA), Gregory recorded 850 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 48 catches. He also had six interceptions while playing on the other side of the ball, and he has been clocked at 4.35 when running the 40-yard dash. CHICAGO (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had a spirited exchange during a question-and-answer session between the commissioner and the team, according to a person with direct knowledge of the conversation. The person spoke to the AP on Monday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Phillies slugger Nick Castellanos previously confirmed some details from the meeting in interviews with The Bandwagon and ESPN. Manfred met with the Phillies and Red Sox during their series last week in Philadelphia. The session with the Phillies lasted for more than an hour. Manfred spoke with the NL team about the media landscape and working together to grow the sport, according to the person with knowledge of the conversation. At some point, Harper told Manfred if he was there to talk about a salary cap, he could 'get the (expletive) out' of the clubhouse. Baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 1, 2026, and some players are concerned about a possible management push for a salary cap. Harper is a two-time NL MVP and one of the game's marquee names, making his confrontation with Manfred more noteworthy. Manfred and some owners have cited payroll disparity as one of baseball's biggest problems, while at the same time MLB is working to address a revenue decline from regional sports networks. Cardinals give promising injury update on Nolan Gorman
As the St. Louis Cardinals keep their name relevant in MLB trade talks while they try to stay relevant in the NL Wild Card picture, some positive injury news was provided on Monday. Since being placed on the injured list earlier this month after discovering lower back pain, it has been announced that second baseman Nolan Gorman will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday. Gorman's back injury has raised concerns for the Cardinals, as he's experienced the same issue in 2023, resulting in an injured-list stint. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol spoke about the recurring injury to Nolan Gorman's back earlier this month, as something like this can be a problem for the second baseman at just 25 years old. "I've had to answer that question every year he's been with us. It flares up every year at some point, and it's just part of it," Marmol told Michael Reynolds. Although he was healthy all of the 2024 season, Gorman's never played more than 119 games in a season since entering the league in 2022 and has been placed on the injured list four times in the past three years. Gorman's most productive season came in 2023 when he led the Cardinals in home runs. He had career highs in batting average (.236), on-base percentage (328), slugging percentage (.478), and OPS (.805) that season while hitting 27 home runs and 76 RBI. Through 66 games in 2025, Gorman has a .219 batting average, .310 on-base percentage, .431 slugging percentage, and .719 OPS, hitting nine home runs and 29 RBI.
