Kalloori Kanavu initiative sees rise in college enrolment among government school students in Coimbatore

The Hindu3 days ago
Coimbatore Kalloori Kanavu, a career guidance initiative under the Naan Mudhalvan programme of the Tamil Nadu Government, aims to improve higher education enrolment among government school students. The programme provides information on career paths and higher education options, facilitates access to education loans and scholarships, and offers personalised counselling.
In Coimbatore district, the camp was conducted in seven phases, with 3,304 select students and their parents participating. As a follow-up, 116 nodal officers from various departments were appointed—one for each government higher secondary school in the district—under the leadership of District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar to visit schools and identify students who had passed Plus Two but had not applied for higher education.
Their efforts led to 38 students joining colleges, with tuition fees amounting to ₹4 lakh covered by government officials and sponsors. Among them were two students from Velliangadu village. S. Mallika, a student belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community who scored 526 marks, was admitted to PSG College of Arts and Science, facilitated by the District Collector. 'There were two students who were the first from their village to complete Class 12. Mallika has been admitted to PSG College of Arts and Science and her entire course is free. Devika, the other student, has cleared NEET and is awaiting counselling. We are pushing hard to identify such students and make all efforts to ensure they pursue higher education,' said Mr. Giriyappanavar.
According to officials, the enrolment rate among students who passed Class XII in Coimbatore district rose from 83% in 2023 to 93% in 2024. This year, the process is ongoing and has reached 98%, so far. Of the 10,301 students who cleared the exam, 121 are yet to apply for any course. An additional 636 students are taking supplementary exams, after which their progress will also be monitored.

Result Day: Glitches Log Out Scores

New Delhi: After a long-awaited CUET exam, thousands of students logged in to check their results on Saturday, only to be met with frozen screens, error messages and endless buffering. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now What was meant to be a gateway to India's top universities quickly spiralled into a digital nightmare. "I kept refreshing all afternoon, but the screen just wouldn't load," said an aspirant from east Delhi. Like her, countless others were locked out of the system due to server glitches that marred the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) results this year. According to one parent, the official CUET website crashed shortly after the results were announced and remained inaccessible for nearly four to five hours. Many users encountered repeated errors such as "invalid authentication" or "invalid admission number" and were even unable to reset their passwords due to the system's failure. "The login troubles persisted for most of the afternoon, despite NTA's tweet announcing the results around 2.30pm. Students began accessing their scores only by 5 or 5.30pm," said a parent. Uvika, an aspirant, attempted to check her score in the afternoon. She claimed that till 4 pm, "it wasn't out." Another student, Chetna Sharma from Gurgaon, managed to access her results late, but not without considerable struggle. She confirmed that her result "came late." She described encountering various errors while trying to log in: "Like, it was showing invalid earlier. Sometimes the application number, sometimes the password, both were invalid. Sometimes the captcha code was invalid. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Then it just came suddenly. " Chetna started trying to check her result in the afternoon and made three or four attempts before she could access her result at 6 pm. Another student, Pratishtha, who also tried to log in as soon as the notification for the results came, said, "I tried and tried. First, the website did not load, and then, it did not take my credentials. It was only after at least two hours that I could access my result." The frustration was compounded by repeated delays in the announcement of the result itself, as students were initially told to expect results by the end of June. Parents noted that other national exams like NEET released both the final answer key and results on the same day. One parent remarked, "It's amazing that they still can't get their website in order." These delays have real consequences for families, many of whom are forced to hedge their bets with private university admissions. Several parents reported paying fees at private universities just to ensure their children have a backup option. While UGC rules mandate substantial fee refunds if classes haven't begun, the uncertainty still leads to financial strain—especially for families for whom even a 10% deduction matters. "We've paid fees at two, three places, but now DU is so delayed we barely have time to plan — how do we shift a child to another city like Bengaluru or Chennai without time to prepare?" said one parent.
