Salman Rushdie to publish new collection of stories, The Eleventh Hour

The Guardian27-03-2025

Salman Rushdie will publish a new collection of stories later this year, the first work of fiction he has written since he was attacked in 2022.
The Eleventh Hour comprises three novellas and two shorter works set across India, England and the US, all places Rushdie has lived.
'The three novellas in this volume, all written in the last 12 months, explore themes and places that have been much on my mind – mortality, Bombay, farewells, England (especially Cambridge), anger, peace, America', said Rushdie. 'And Goya and Kafka and Bosch as well.'
In one story, two men in Chennai, India, face personal tragedy against the backdrop of national calamity. Another story revisits the Bombay neighbourhood of Rushdie's 1981 novel Midnight's Children, where a magical musician is unhappily married to a billionaire. A third story, set in an English college, sees an undead academic unable to rest until he gets revenge against his former tormentor.
'I'm happy that the stories, very different from one another in setting, story and technique, nevertheless manage to be in conversation with one another, and with the two stories that serve as prologue and epilogue to this threesome,' Rushdie added. 'I have come to think of the quintet as a single work, and I hope readers may see and enjoy it in the same way.'
The book 'moves between the places [Rushdie] has grown up in, inhabited, explored, and left', according to Rushdie's publisher Vintage, a division of Penguin Random House. 'In doing so, he asks fundamental questions we all one day face. How does one deal with, accommodate, or rail against entering the 11th hour, the final stage of your life? How can you bid farewell to the places you have made home?'
Rushdie announced that he was working on the forthcoming book last October to an audience at Lviv BookForum. All the novellas 'in some way consider the idea of an ending', he said at the time.

The Eleventh Hour will be Rushdie's first book since publishing Knife, an account of the 2022 attempt on his life, last year. His most recent work of fiction was Victory City, a novel published in 2023, which he completed before he was attacked on stage in New York.
Rushdie's other novels include The Satanic Verses and Quichotte. Midnight's Children won the 1981 Booker prize, the Booker of Bookers in 1994, marking the prize's 25th anniversary, and the Best of the Booker in 2008, marking the award's 40th anniversary. Rushdie previously published a collection of short stories in 1994 titled East, West.
The Eleventh Hour by Salman Rushdie will be published on 4 November (Vintage, £18.99). To support the Guardian and Observer, order your copy at guardianbookshop.com. Delivery charges may apply.

Olivia Rodrigo shows her love for UK in Union Jack hot pants at festival

Olivia Rodrigo showed off her figure - and her love for the UK - in Union Jack hot pants as she declared her love for England during her headline Glastonbury set on Sunday. The star, 22, paired her look with fishnet pantyhose and a graphic T-shirt. During her energetic set, Olivia paused to express her love for a variety of British foods as she gushed over UK supermarket Marks & Spencer sweets. She said: 'One thing you should know about me is f***ing love England, I love England so much. It's bands like the Cure that first got me acquainted with England but now that I'm older I have so many things I love about England.' And she cheekily added she 'really loves English boys'. She is dating British actor Louis Partridge, 22. She continued: 'I love pop culture, I love that nobody judges you for having a pint at noon it's the best. I love English sweets from M&S and Collin the Caterpillar. 'True story I have had three sticky toffee pudding since arriving at Glastonbury so safe to say I love English food. 'As luck would have it, I also really love English boys, I wrote this next song about getting to know a boy from England who loves beans on a jacket potato, I took all our little jokes and made a song called, So America.' Earlier in her set, she wore a white lace dress as she sang Obsessed. Olivia said: 'How are we doing tonight, Glastonbury? Holy f***ing s***, I don't think I've ever seen so many people in my life. Guys, it's the last night of the festival. Are you ready to have some fun?' The chart-topping star's set also featured performances of Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl, Vampire and Drivers Licence, the 2021 single that proved to be a turning point in Olivia's music career. The singer was later joined on stage by Robert Smith from the Cure. Before her guest appeared on stage, Olivia said: 'I'm so wildly excited about this next guest. He is perhaps the best songwriter to come out of England, he is a Glastonbury legend and a personal hero of mine.' The duo then joined forces to perform a rendition of Friday I'm in Love, which appeared on The Cure's 1992 album Wish. Fans rushed to X to gush that Olivia was one of the 'best performers' of the weekend and applauded the Disney star for 'silencing the haters' after they claimed she didn't deserve the headline spot. One wrote: 'Olivia Rodrigo, that's how you headline Glastonbury, 10/10 no notes.' Another added: 'The entire Glastonbury crowd singing drivers licence omg Olivia Rodrigo you will always be that girl.' A third said: 'This crowd for Olivia Rodrigo… best crowd of the whole entire weekend, her connection to the crowd is on another level.' Someone else noted: 'Olivia Rodrigo silencing the haters with this brilliant performance.' While a fifth said: 'I have to admit I am well-impressed by Olivia Rodrigo's headline show on the Pyramid Stage at #Glastonbury tonight. She sings, she plays piano, acoustic guitar and electric guitar, and then rolls out Robert Smith to duet on a couple of classics by The Cure. And she's only 22!'

Ofcom speaking to BBC 'as a matter of urgency' over Bob Vylan Glastonbury contro

Ofcom has said they are speaking to the BBC over Bob Vylan's Glastonbury performance, which led chants including 'death to the IDF' with the festival crowd. On Saturday the English punk duo – which includes frontman Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan on drums – took to the festival's West Holts Stage ahead of Kneecap. During their set, they led festival-goers in chants calling for the end of the Israeli Defence Force and to 'free, free Palestine'. Soon after police said they were reviewing footage from the performance to determine whether any offences had been committed. Now the broadcasting regulator Ofcom has issued a statement on the BBC's coverage of Bob Vylan's performance at Glastonbury. 'We are very concerned about the live stream of this performance, and the BBC clearly has questions to answer,' the statement began. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'We have been speaking to the BBC over the weekend and we are obtaining further information as a matter of urgency, including what procedures were in place to ensure compliance with its own editorial guidelines.' Ofcom's involvement at this stage is an unusual move, given that the BBC has its own complaints process, which complainants must go through before they can be escalated to Ofcom. The Ofcom guidance for BBC complaints states that it is only in 'exceptional circumstances' that Ofcom can circumvent the BBC's complaints process. The example given for such circumstances on the Ofcom website is 'if the BBC broadcast content involving potentially serious harm to the public'. Avon and Somerset police shared a statement on social media saying they were 'aware of the comments' from the West Holts Stage. They added: 'Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.' Bob Vylan frontman Bobby has since doubled down on the duo's performance in spite of the backlash, posting a statement with the caption: 'I said what I said.' 'As I lay in bed this morning, my phone buzzing non-stop, inundated with messages of both support and hatred, I listen to my daughter typing out loud as she fills out a school survey asking her for feedback on the current state of her school dinners,' he began. More Trending 'She expressed that she would like healthier meals, more options and dishes inspired by other parts of the world. 'Listening to her voice her opinions on a matter that she cares about and affects her daily reminds me that we may not be doomed after all. Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place. 'As we grow older and our fire possibly starts to dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us. View More » 'Let us display to them loudly and visibly the right thing to do when we want and need change. Let them see us marching in the streets, campaigning on ground level, organising online and shouting about it on any and every stage that we are offered. Today it is a change in school dinners, tomorrow it is a change in foreign policy.' Got a story?
