Women's EURO 2025: Unbeaten Spain overcomes Italy; Belgium beats Portugal
Italy lost but also advanced to the quarterfinals.
Italy took a 10th-minute lead against the 2023 World Cup champion on defender Elisabetta Oliviero's shot, soon after captain Elena Linari struck the crossbar with a header.
Spain leveled within four minutes, led from the 49th, and added Esther González's tournament-leading fourth goal in stoppage time.
Still, Spain had enough problems in defense handling the Italians, who had 13 attempts on goal, to give host Switzerland some hope for its quarterfinal in one week.
Norway awaits Italy in the first quarterfinal on Wednesday in Geneva, and it will be Spain-Switzerland two days later in Bern.
Belgium beats Portugal for its first win at EURO 2025

Janice Cayman scored in stoppage time for Belgium to beat Portugal 2-1 and a first win in its final game at the Women's European Championship on Friday.
Amber Tysiak thought she already scored Belgium's winner in stoppage time but that goal was struck out for an offside call, the second Belgium goal ruled out after a VAR check.
Portugal needed a win to have any hope of making the knockout stage but got off to a bad start when Belgium captain Tessa Wullaert slid in to meet Jill Janssens' cross for the third-minute opener.
More bad news came from Bern where Italy took a shock lead against tournament favorite Spain. Portugal was hoping for a heavy Italian defeat to enable its progress to the quarterfinals on goal difference — as long as it also won.
Telma Encarnação got Portugal's only goal late and couldn't prevent her team's elimination.

Its more likely role is blocking England's path to the quarterfinals. England can rise above France and finish top, yet also could secure second place — and a quarterfinal against Sweden — with a win, draw or even a loss. 'My women,' Wales coach Wilkinson said, 'get to show up and spoil the party and that's a wonderful job to have.' Welsh hearts and souls will be on display when its anthem is sung rousingly before kickoff in the stadium at St. Gallen, though England defender Alex Greenwood said her own team and fans should not be underestimated. 'If you want to speak about passion I think the English are very, very passionate people,' Greenwood said. July 12 (Reuters) - Rampant Ireland ran in 16 tries as they crushed tier-2 Portugal 106-7 in Lisbon on Saturday, the biggest victory in their 150-year history and also their first time beyond 100 points. Ireland were missing 16 of their regular players who are on tour in Australia with the British & Irish Lions, and have stand-in coach Paul O'Connell leading the team, but were far too quick and powerful for the Portuguese. "I feel sorry for Portugal but we were very clinical and took our chances," O'Connell told Virgin Sports. "It is a unique summer tour given the Lions tour is on at the same time but I am very happy with how our squad applied themselves. "It is great to get some guys capped and scoring tries and training in an international environment." The visitors fielded three debutants and all crossed for tries – winger Shayne Bolton and centre Hugh Gavin both scored twice, while flanker Alex Kendellen also got on the scoresheet. The scenario in Group D is that France sits top on six points, and England is expected also to end on six points by beating Wales in the final round of games played at the same time on Sunday evening in Switzerland.
