PPP likely to join Centre as power-sharing talks advance

After extending crucial support to the federal budget, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is expected to formally join the federal government in July, with the distribution of ministries likely to be finalised next month, sources told Express News.
The move comes after weeks of tension between the PPP and the ruling Paksitan Muslim League (PML-N) over budget allocations and controversial tax measures, which had prompted strong criticism from the PPP. The party had accused the government of sidelining Sindh and threatened to withhold support for the budget unless its demands were addressed.
However, the deadlock eased when the government agreed to a number of key concessions, including a 20% increase in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) budget and the rollback of proposed powers for the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to arrest taxpayers without warrants.

Addressing the National Assembly on Thursday, PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had said his party would support the federal budget after the government accepted its demands to raise the BISP allocation to Rs716 billion, exempt income tax for salaried individuals earning up to Rs100,000, and reduce sales tax on solar panels.
Sources familiar with the negotiations say the PPP's budget support has paved the way for a broader power-sharing arrangement with the PML-N, brokered in part by the establishment. They added that the establishment had assured PPP leadership there would be no change in government and that political continuity was essential for national stability.
'The message was clear: the system must continue — and it will,' a source close to the talks said.
Efforts are also underway to bring other political forces on board as part of a larger consensus-building initiative.
In the next phase, the PPP is expected to become part of the Punjab government, sources said. Backchannel talks between the two parties are already in progress, though a final agreement has yet to be reached.

'Green credit' scheme for recycling plastic bottles launched in Lahore
Listen to article A new eco-friendly initiative has been launched in Lahore aimed at tackling plastic pollution by incentivising citizens to recycle used plastic bottles, it emerged on Monday. Under the programme, residents can deposit empty plastic bottles into Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and earn up to Rs1,000 in 'Green Credit' per kilogram of plastic — roughly 20 one-and-a-half litre bottles. The project, led by ISP Environmental Solutions with support from the Intratech Group and the World Bank, is part of Punjab's Environmental Protection Agency's Green Credit Program. The project aims to transform how urban waste is managed and perceived by offering financial incentives in exchange for used plastic. Lahore produces about 500 tons of plastic waste daily, much of which pollutes waterways and landfills, according to Intratech Group Chairperson Gulfam Abid. 'These new Reverse Vending Machines will collect single-use plastic items, including bottles, cups and plates,' he explained. 'The collected material will be repurposed into raw materials for footpaths, road repairs and environmentally sustainable bricks.' Users simply insert the bottles into a designated slot, press button 'A,' enter their mobile number, and press button 'B' to view their credit details on the screen. The same information is also accessible via a dedicated mobile application. The app not only tracks credit but also connects users directly with waste dealers. Citizens can sell their plastic through the platform, and company representatives will collect the items from their location. More than 18,000 local scrap dealers have been onboarded into the system, and they too can earn green credit in addition to their regular profits. In the initial phase, the machines are being installed at four private universities in Lahore. Later, the project will expand to both public and private spaces. While the machines are locally manufactured in Pakistan, they incorporate advanced Chinese technology. Each unit costs around Rs800,000 to produce. An 'Eco Bricks Plant' has also been established in the Sundar Industrial Estate as part of the program. It will manufacture construction-grade bricks using the collected plastic. The plant's inauguration is scheduled for July. Officials emphasize that the project goes beyond just installing machines — its broader goal is to instill a sense of environmental stewardship among the public. 'We want people to view plastic not as waste, but as a valuable resource that can be reused for environmental and economic gain,' one official said.

Merit Packaging approves major asset sale to Kompass Pakistan
Shareholders of Merit Packaging Limited (MPL) have approved the sale of major assets, including the plant and machinery of its flexible packaging unit and associated goodwill, for a total consideration of Rs1 billion. The listed company, engaged in the manufacture and sale of printing and packaging materials, disclosed the development in its notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday. The decision was passed during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on June 27, 2025. The buyer, Kompass Pakistan (Private) Limited, submitted the best available offer, which was accepted by the company following due evaluation, MPL said. 'The consent of shareholders be and is hereby accorded to the disposal and sale of the Company's assets comprising of plant and machinery (flexible packaging unit) and goodwill located at 17-B, Sector 29, Korangi Industrial Township, Karachi for an aggregate sale consideration of Rs1,000,000,000 based on the best available quote from the interested party,' read the notice. It said that the Board of Directors has been authorised to execute the transaction, including entering into sale agreements, receiving payment, and handling all legal formalities related to the asset transfer. At the time of filing this story, the share price of Merit Packaging Limited was being traded at Rs14.30, an increase of Re0.35 or 2.51%. Incorporated in Pakistan as a public limited company in 1980, MPL is engaged in the manufacturing and sale of printing and packaging materials. The company caters to a wide range of sectors including food & beverages, surgical instruments, consumer goods, textiles, etc. The company belongs to The Lakson Group of companies.

BISP Chairperson visits Swat to honour Hilal Khan
PESHAWAR: Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, visited Swat on Sunday on the special directions of President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, to meet Hilal Khan, the brave volunteer who risked his life to save people during the recent Swat River tragedy. The visit came two days after the tragic incident in Swat, where 14 members of a tourist family from Sialkot were swept away by a sudden flash flood in the river while having breakfast, after being stranded for almost two hours. With official rescue teams failing to respond in time, Hilal Khan jumped into action. Using a makeshift boat, he fought the strong currents of the river and tried to save as many lives as possible. He managed to rescue a couple of family members and later helped fished out the bodies of those who drowned, returning them to their grieving families. Senator Rubina Khalid praised Hilal Khan for his bravery and humanity. 'Hilal Khan is the face of humanity. He acted when it mattered most,' she said. 'His courage and selfless service are an inspiration for the entire nation. Heroes like Hilal are the pride of Pakistan. Saving one life is like saving all of humanity.' Speaking to the people of Swat, Senator Rubina Khalid said that President Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari were deeply moved by Hilal Khan's bravery. They instructed her to meet him personally, offer support, and assess how the Sindh Government could help strengthen local volunteer rescue efforts in Swat region. Senator Rubina Khalid announced that the Sindh Government would provide equipment and resources to local volunteers to support future rescue operations. She also contributed Rs. 100,000 from her own pocket to Hilal Khan to help him and fellow volunteers purchase basic rescue equipment.
