German auto giant Volkswagen is the latest of the big carmakers to drop its EV-specific nomenclature on models. The automaker has confirmed it will be moving away from the 'ID" prefix that has so far defined its electric vehicle range, as it expands with newer products. The upcoming Volkswagen ID. 1 and ID. 2 small electric cars will be the first future offerings to get conventional names.
Volkswagen to drop ID nomenclature on future EVs
The development was recently confirmed by Martin Sander, member of Volkswagen's Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales, in a recent interaction with German publication Auto und Wirtschaft. The board member revealed the upcoming ID. 2all and ID. Every1 concepts will not carry the same names into production. Both concepts preview a new electric entry-level small car and a premium hatchback (supermini in European speak), catered to the masses.

The Volkswagen ID. Every1 concept could use the Polo name when it enters production
The switch to more conventional names should hardly come as surprising, given the strategy has seldom worked for auto players at large in Germany. Carmakers managed to corner themselves with their often confusing naming strategy; be it Mercedes with the EQ nomenclature or BMW with the 'i" series on its EVs. Audi also tried the odd and even names for its electric and ICE cars but that seems to be fading away too. Volkswagen ID. 2 all & ID. Every1 to get real names
So far, Volkswagen has the ID. 3 hatchback, ID. 4, ID. 5, ID. 6 (sold only in China), ID. 7, and the ID. Buzz minivan on sale globally. The VW ID. 3 was the brand's first all-electric offering under the new strategy and arrived in 2017 as a concept. It'll be interesting to see the naming direction Volkswagen chooses with the ID. 2all and ID. Every1 concepts.
Reports suggest that the former could use the Polo name in some form to build on the popularity of the nameplate, while the ID. Every1 small car could revive names like the Lupo, Fox, or Up!, if not an entirely new name. Both concepts will enter production by 2027. Starting 2026, Volkswagen will also begin updating the existing ID models and this would be a good time for the automaker to start renaming its EVs.

Crackdown against Birkenstock ‘fakes': Delhi HC orders factory inspections in India after footwear brand files lawsuit

Officers, upon the Delhi High Court order, recently inspected small-scale factories in Delhi and Agra to seize suspected counterfeit Birkenstock sandals. The intellectual property enforcement action followed a lawsuit filed by the German footwear brand in the high court, reported news agency Reuters. Birkenstock's complaint stated that an internal investigation had found lookalike products being manufactured in rural areas around Agra and sold locally as well as exported abroad. In May, Birkenstock filed an infringement lawsuit in the Delhi HC against four footwear traders, four factories, and two unnamed individuals. On May 26, Justice Saurabh Banerjee of the Delhi High Court issued a confidential order, later made public on the court's website, authorising swift legal action. The judge appointed 10 local lawyers as court commissioners to visit the suspect locations. They were directed to 'seize, pack and seal the infringing products.' The order also included photographs submitted by Birkenstock showing alleged counterfeit sandals and packaging carrying its branding. 'There is all likelihood of the public getting deceived,' Justice Banerjee wrote in his order. 'The differences, hardly if any, are not something which can be discernable to the naked eyes.' He noted that the samples 'seem like a cheap knock off' of genuine Birkenstock footwear. The inspections have since been completed, and confidential reports were submitted to the judge, said three people familiar with the matter, as per Reuters. The next hearing is scheduled for October 6. The case adds to a growing list of high-profile intellectual property battles in India's footwear sector. Earlier this month, Crocs secured the court's nod to proceed with a long-pending infringement case. Meanwhile, Prada came under criticism for promoting sandals similar to Indian ethnic footwear without initially crediting the country's cultural contribution. Earlier this year, the Birkenstock faced a legal setback in Germany when a court ruled that its sandals did not qualify as art and were therefore not protected by copyright.

Fossil Fuels Set to Fill Europe's Power Gap as Wind Plunges

(Bloomberg) -- Europe's fleet of coal and gas plants could come to the rescue as wind power generation is set to slump this summer, driving up both electricity prices and emissions. Output from coal plants in major markets including Germany, France and Spain is poised to jump 50% this month compared with June, according to a forecast by BloombergNEF. That's in response to a 40% plunge in wind power estimated by Energy Aspects Ltd. for July and August. The likely comeback for the region's legacy fossil-fuel plants shows just how important they are even after utilities have spent decades and a fortune to expand the renewable energy sector. When solar generation surges during spring and summer months, there isn't yet an effective way of storing all the electricity that the panels generate. The same holds true for wind. Read: Europe's Heat Wave Set to Ease But Relief May Be Short-Lived Over the past few weeks, temperatures have approached 40C (104F) in some places in Germany. During the evening of July 1, hourly electricity prices jumped to €557.34 per megawatt-hour on the EPEX Spot SE exchange in Paris, or almost 9 times higher than the lowest period for that day. 'The longer the wind lull continues amid the scorching heat, the longer fossil fuels will have to fill the evening demand gap in power markets,' said Florence Schmit, energy strategist at Rabobank. Wind generation surged to a record in June in both Germany and the UK, according to data from the European Energy Exchange. July's expected slump would be a throwback to last winter and spring when output was much lower than normal and plants burning fossil fuels plants had to boost output to help keep the lights on. Emissions from European Union power plants this month could jump by 14% compared with in June, according to a BloombergNEF forecast. German next-month power futures are trading at €80.94 per megawatt hour, about a third higher than in April when cooling demand had not yet ramped up in Europe. Mercedes + UAE Golden Visa now a cheaper combo than just car deal in India

At ₹1 crore, buying a Mercedes in India now costs more than getting the same car in Dubai-plus a UAE Golden Visa under its new nomination-based residency scheme New Delhi At the price of buying a Mercedes-Benz E-Class in India, Indians can now get the same car in Dubai and secure a UAE Golden Visa —thanks to a new nomination-based residency scheme that drastically lowers the eligibility bar. A viral social media post by entrepreneur Abhinav Kukreja brought this comparison into sharp focus. 'If you have ₹1 crore, now you can either: 1. Buy a Mercedes E-Class in India or 2. Get Dubai Golden Visa for Life + Buy Mercedes E-Class in Dubai,' he wrote on X, along with a news clip. If you have 1Cr, now you can either: 1. Buy Mercedes E Class in India Or 2. Get Dubai Golden Visa for Life + Buy Mercedes E Class in Dubai — Abhinav Kukreja (@kukreja_abhinav) July 6, 2025 Mercedes E-Class pricing: India vs Dubai In India, the on-road price of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class now breaches the ₹1 crore mark in certain cities. In Bengaluru, the E 220d variant is priced at ₹1,02,05,006. In Delhi, the E 200 starts at ₹78.50 lakh, while the E 450 costs ₹92.50 lakh (ex-showroom), according to estimates from CarDekho. In contrast, in Dubai, the E 200 starts at AED 326,900 (roughly ₹74 lakh), and the E 450 4MATIC is priced at AED 432,900 (around ₹97.5 lakh). UAE Golden Visa math Until recently, the UAE Golden Visa was a privilege reserved for property owners or major investors, typically requiring AED 2 million (₹4.66 crore) or more in real estate or business commitments. But under the new nomination-based pilot scheme, Indians can now qualify by paying a one-time fee of AED 100,000 (around ₹23.3 lakh), following a detailed vetting process, no property or business investment required. Under this system, eligible Indians can obtain a lifetime UAE Golden Visa for AED 100,000 with no property purchase required. Applicants are selected based on professional track record, contributions to the economy or society, and a detailed background check that includes criminal history, financial stability, and even social media presence. This initiative, aimed at attracting professionals, entrepreneurs, creators, and even e-sports players, allows approved applicants to live in the UAE indefinitely, along with family and domestic staff, with full work and business rights. What can ₹1 crore get you in Dubai? Golden Visa (lifetime): ₹23.3 lakh Mercedes E 200 (Dubai): ₹74 lakh (approx) Total: ₹97.3 lakh Trump's golden visa gamble The UAE's lowering of barriers is in sharp contrast to US President Donald Trump's own golden visa proposals. The Trump Card, officially launched on June 12, 2025, demands a hefty $5 million (roughly ₹41.8 crore) investment for foreign nationals seeking US residency. Lauded by Trump as a 'beautiful road to the greatest country", the digital card features Trump's image and promises green card privileges and an eventual path to citizenship. However, the legal framework around the programme remains unclear. It has no legislative backing from the US Congress, no formal USCIS structure, and has already drawn scrutiny from legal experts, with warnings that it could be blocked or challenged in court. Despite this, over 68,000 people have registered interest, and Indian investors were actively pitched the programme during a recent visit by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
