TV tonight: what could possibly go wrong in the live EastEnders episode?

The Guardian20-02-2025

7.30pm, BBC One The BBC has gone all in for EastEnders' 40th anniversary: Ross Kemp's back on the square as Grant Mitchell, and iPlayer is overflowing with classic 'doof doof' episodes and spin-offs. The jewel in the crown, though, is this live episode, with an interactive twist as the public will be allowed to decide the outcome of one storyline: will Denise end up with Mr Reliable, Jack, or take a chance on Ravi? But more importantly, will anything go disastrously wrong? Hannah J Davies
8pm, Channel 4
A handsome chow chow, a cockapoo who likes to be heard and a family of three who want to stick together – these are the pooches looking to match with a new owner this week. Will 11-year-old Luke be taking one (or some) home? Hollie Richardson
9pm, BBC One It's potatoes v tomatoes in this round of the business reality show, as the teams create dishes to entice the general public at lunchtime. True to Apprentice form, there are kitchen mishaps, risky promises and odd pricings aplenty, all of which lead to one candidate's last supper in the boardroom. Nicole Vassell
9pm, Channel 4 This hospital documentary manages to balance the trauma of emergency medicine with hopeful studies of the human condition. A 55-year-old woman is blue-lighted to Queen's medical centre in Nottingham, where staff soon realise their latest patient is, in fact, one of their most senior nursing colleagues, Sister Lou. HJD
9pm, Channel 5 Walter Raleigh is (not entirely accurately) credited with bringing potatoes and tobacco to Europe – and the Elizabethan explorer's legacy is the next to be scrutinised in James May's series. He starts by asking how Raleigh talked his way to the top of London high society using the art of persuasion. HR
10.30pm, Channel 5 A double-bill finale for the divisive Irish drama inspired by the 'Vanishing Triangle' – the high-profile disappearances of eight women during the 80s and 90s. A lead to the killer takes Lisa and Brennan to an abandoned slaughterhouse. Will they find the answers they're searching for? HR
Vesper (Kristina Buožytė and Bruno Samper, 2022), 9pm, Film4
Kristina Buožytė and Bruno Samper's coming-of-age sci-fi movie combines imaginative design with a fable-like feel. It's a dystopian story set in a new dark age with a genetically mutated ecosystem and citadels that control the few viable crops. Teenager Vesper (Raffiella Chapman) just about survives in a rural shack with her bedbound father, while keeping out of the way of the local bigwig, her uncle Jonas (an implacably brutal Eddie Marsan). But she has scientific skills that offer hope for the future, especially after an encounter with a mysterious citadel dweller (Rosy McEwen). Simon Wardell
The Ladykillers (Alexander Mackendrick, 1955), 9pm, Sky Arts The final classic from the golden age of Ealing Studios, Alexander Mackendrick's piquant comedy pits a gang of robbers against a sweet old widow who lives near London's King's Cross station. Alec Guinness is the most famous name, playing their leader, Prof Marcus, but dramatically it's a group effort, with Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellers part of his motley crew. Katie Johnson is the formidable Mrs Wilberforce, who rents out rooms to Marcus's 'string quintet' while they plan their next operation, and proves to be their unwitting nemesis. SW

Rod Stewart, Bobby Vylan and Kneecap - Readers discuss politics at Glastonbury

Do you agree with our readers? Have your say on these MetroTalk topics and more in the comments. Rod Stewart says we should 'give [Nigel] Farage a chance', saying the Reform leader is 'coming across well' (Metro, Mon). By all means listen to Sir Rod's music but don't listen to the 80-year-old rocker for advice on politics, how to vote or even what's good for younger UK artists. Rebranding his Brexit Party as Reform UK isn't enough to obscure what a disaster Farage has already been for Britain, including its music industry. Brexit has been awful for musicians wanting to tour Europe, hence the campaign to get the damage undone, which is at Peter Brown, Cleckheaton Rapper Bobby Vylan led chants of 'death, death to the IDF' (the Israel Defence Forces) during his Glastonbury performance. Irish hip-hop band Kneecap were allowed to play despite member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh being charged with displaying a Hezbollah flag at a previous gig. If Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Tory councillor, can be jailed for saying on the day of the Southport riots that hotels housing asylum seekers should be set on fire, then Vylan and Kneecap should be immediately brought before a judge for hate speak and inciting violence. Facial recognition technology should be used to identify the worst offenders in the Glastonbury crowd who joined in the death chants and make an example of them. Barry Stanton, Folkestone It's a shame Glastonbury appears to be descending in to a political commentary event rather than a musical one. There was a time when an artist would make a subtle comment in a lyric or song title and the fans would get their point and that would be it. Now it's in your face. I'd have thought most fans go to Glastonbury for a release from the often depressing news rather than be subjected to another political broadcast. Even Rod is at it. He should stick to talking about Maggie. Dec, Essex I am increasingly critical of Israel's military actions, which have had a huge civilian cost, and I think it is legitimate to call attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. But I have far more respect for aid agencies in Gaza than any musician. Free speech is not and never has been a green light to incite violence. I wonder what supporters of Kneecap or Bobby Vylan would make of a British nationalist trio promoting far-right groups? At Glastonbury, Kneecap 'joked' about starting a riot outside the upcoming court case. But this has real-world consequences for police officers who may be injured if trouble breaks out. None of this helps the struggling Palestinian people. These artists are not being 'persecuted' for their views – they are being held to account for crossing a line. Nathan Hazlett, Sunderland From now on, only Christmas carols are allowed at Glastonbury! Samuel, Tooting You might not like Palestine Action, the protest group proscribed as a terrorist group by home secretary Yvette Cooper. Indeed, you might hate them but you have to admit they aren't terrorists. They don't have weapons or bombs. They've never hurt, never mind killed, anyone. What they've done is smash up a few assembly lines and broken some planes. Criminals they may be but terrorists they are not. This isn't about protecting people, it's about clamping down on dissent because the government knows it has lost the argument over Israel and Gaza. What these authoritarian politicians don't understand is that as soon as a new government comes in, it will use these laws to silence the people currently in charge. As for everyone else, we'll have long since lost any say in anything important by then. Rob Slater, Norfolk In reply to S Coyne (MetroTalk, Wed), who says Reform UK has nothing to offer working people. More Trending Reform says it will raise the threshold from where you start paying income tax to £20,000. So it is very much helping working people. Regarding the plan to offer non-doms a £250,000 'Britannia Card' to exempt them from paying tax on foreign assets, millionaires pay a lot in other taxes but they are leaving in droves. It's a good idea to do anything to stop that exodus. Timothy Triggs, Oxford Bob Jones (MetroTalk, Fri) says he's willing to show Brad Pitt around London after the superstar said he 'missed out on having a gay experience'. Well, Bob, I'm new in town and I may not be Brad Pitt but I could be the perfect fit. Or should this be in Rush Hour Crush..? Bob Vylan star dubbed 'shock-jock' as MP says BBC made three obvious errors

Lisa Nandy said chanting at the Glastonbury Festival was 'appalling and unacceptable' and Lib Dem Max Wilkinson branded rapper Bobby Vylan a 'shock-jock attention-seeking musician' The BBC should have forseen problems ahead of Bob Vylan's Glastonbury set, a furious Cabinet member told MPs. Lisa Nandy said the corporation must explain why it did not immediately stop broadcasting when a chant of "death to the IDF" started. The Culture Secretary said she had demanded to know what due dilligence was carried out on the artist before it happened. Ms Nandy told the Commons that Jewish people at the festival had created their own "safe space" after being left fearful by imagery and slogans. She branded the scenes "appalling and unacceptable". She said she had met BBC director general Tim Davie, adding: "I expect answers to these questions without delay. I have made that view clear to the BBC leadership and I will of course update the House as soon as I can." The performance and broadcast - which have resulted in a police investigation - were condemned across the Commons. Lib Dem MP Max Wilkinson branded rapper Bobby Vylan - real name Pascal Robinson-Foster - a "shock-jock attention-seeking musician". He added: "A cursory look through the social media of Bob Vylan raises the question of how this was not forseen." Ms Nandy said the BBC's supporters were "more angry than anybody" about the weekend's events. She said: "I'm not sure that you need an inquiry to establish that it should have been foreseeable that there would be problems with broadcasts this weekend, that the decision to broadcast live without any delay should have been reviewed, and that a live feed should have been pulled immediately when the chants 'death, death to the IDF' began." The Labour frontbencher said she had told Mr Davie she is not satisfied with the answers she has been given so far. It comes as Avon and Somerset Police said a criminal investigation is underway following performances by Bob Vylan and Irish rap trio Kneecap. And the United States Government also announced that Bobby Vylan have been banned from the US. The duo were set to perform shows in Chicago, Brooklyn and Philadelphia in the autumn. The BBC has expressed its regret at not pulling the live stream of Bob Vylan's performance, saying the "antisemitic sentiments" expressed were "utterly unacceptable". Shadow Culture Secretary Stuart Andrew claimed the BBC "has repeatedly failed to call out antisemitic rhetoric" - and went on to criticise its decision to show a pre-recorded performance by Irish rap group Kneecap. The Tory MP said: "The BBC's decision to also broadcast material from Kneecap, a group whose members have openly called for members of Parliament to be killed, is as indefensible as it is shocking."
