The
Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing

H-NEW
) was selected in one of the 12 categories for its work in
anti-narcotics enforcement
. The Hyderabad CP, who is the head of H-NEW, received the award.
"I spoke about issues related to narcotics faced by India, especially after Covid, the ways in which drugs are entering the country and the various gangs apprehended. H-New's awareness campaigns in educational institutions through anti-drug committees as well as rehabilitation measures were highlighted," Anand said.
The other 11 categories are: Excellence in Road Safety, Best Innovative Idea in Security and Law Enforcement, Best Artificial Intelligence Implementation in Policing, Excellence in Forensic Science, Good Samaritan, Excellence in Customer Service in Policing, People of Determination Excellence, Startups Innovation, Inspiring Female Officer, and Best Police Application Award.

Karnataka HC stays BJP's defamation case over ads against CM Siddaramaiah
The Karnataka High Court on Friday stayed a defamation case filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Bar and Bench reported. The case relates to newspaper advertisements published by Congress leaders, which allegedly defamed the previous BJP-led government in the state. Siddaramaiah is one of several Congress leaders accused in the case, which centres on claims made in political advertisements during the 2023 Assembly election campaign. The High Court had earlier awarded interim relief to Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and DK Shivakumar, as well as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Justice SR Krishna Kumar stayed the trial court's proceedings against Siddaramaiah and combined his petition to quash the case with those filed by the other accused. The court also issued a notice to the BJP, seeking its response to Siddaramaiah's plea, Bar and Bench reported. Case alleges derogatory remarks in Congress ads The defamation complaint was filed against the Indian National Congress (INC), KPCC, and several party leaders. The BJP has alleged that the Congress was responsible for publishing advertisements containing defamatory remarks about its governance during 2019–2023. According to the complaint, the ads accused the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government of widespread corruption, referring to it as a '40 per cent commission sarkar'. The term suggested that commissions were demanded in return for awarding public works contracts, procurement deals, and even for Covid-19 related supplies. The controversial advertisements further alleged that the BJP-led government looted around ₹1,500 crore through corrupt means. They also claimed a system of 'score cards' and 'rate cards' was in place — allegedly referring to bribes for government jobs and postings. Similar '40 per cent' allegation was also reportedly made by Rahul Gandhi during a public speech. The High Court is now examining all related petitions, and a final decision on whether to quash the case is awaited.

Liquor shops to shut in parts of city for Mahankali Jatara
Hyderabad: Liquor shops in parts of the city would remain closed for 48 hours on account of Sree Ujjaini Mahankali Jathara from July 13. A notification issued by the Hyderabad Police Commissioner C V Anand said the liquor shops in 11 police station areas in the city would be closed from 6 am on July 13 to 6 am on July 15 in view of Sree Ujjaini Mahankali Jathara. The 11 police stations are Gandhinagar, Chilkalguda, Lallaguda, Warasiguda, Begumpet, Gopalapuram, Tukaramgate, Marredpally, Mahankali, Ramgopalpet and Monda Market.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment till death for sexual assault of minor girl
A 23-year-old man from Annur in Coimbatore district was sentenced to life imprisonment till death on Thursday (July 10, 2025) for sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in 2020. The accused, M. Prakash alias Siva was working as a daily wager during the COVID-19 lockdown. On September 15, 2020, he lured the girl with chocolates while she was playing near the market, took her to a secluded spot, and sexually assaulted her. Based on a complaint lodged by the child's mother, the Puliyampatti police registered a case under Section 5(m) read with Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The accused was arrested and lodged in prison. After the trial, the Fast Track Mahila Court Judge C. Sornakumar sentenced Prakash to life imprisonment till death for sexual assault and imposed fine of ₹20,000. The judge recommended that the State Government provide a compensation of ₹3 lakh to the victim. Later, Prakash was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
