Spain holiday horror as Irish tourists battered by gang in late-night ambush

Two Irish tourists were left with facial fractures and other injuries after being attacked by a teenage gang of armed robbers in a Costa del Sol holiday resort.
They were assaulted as they walked back to their hotel in the picturesque town of Nerja around 30 miles east of Malaga after a boozy night out.
Police are understood to have identified the suspects as four local youngsters believed to include a minor. It was not immediately clear this morning if the Civil Guard has made any arrests. The mugging happened in the early hours of Friday morning.
Respected local paper Sur said the culprits threatened their victims with a knife before repeatedly punching and kicking them and fleeing with stolen cash and mobile phones.
It described the attack as so "violent" remains of blood were left spattered on a residential property by where the mugging took place.
Police were alerted by local residents who heard screams and shouting.
The Irish holidaymakers, who were said to have been unable to defend themselves properly from the blows they received because they were drunk, reportedly each suffered several facial fractures among other injuries.
They were taken to a nearby health centre and are thought to have been transferred afterwards to hospital. The Civil Guard in Malaga has not yet made any official comment about the incident.
Nerja is the easternmost town on the Costa del Sol and is known for its beautiful beaches and its caves stretching for almost five kilometres which are one of Spain's major tourist attractions.
In September last year a 29-year-old Irish holidaymaker ended up in a specialist hospital burns unit after a freak accident at a friend's wedding in the resort.
She was seriously injured after being engulfed in flames when her dress caught fire on decorative candles as she was in the bathroom. Fellow guests dialled 999 after finding her semi-conscious at a holiday rental apartment.
She was initially taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Malaga where she is understood to have undergone an emergency operation before being transferred to a burns unit at Seville's Virgen del Rocio University Hospital.

Fundraiser launched to repatriate remains of man killed in e-scooter crash

A man killed in a horror road collision involving a car and an e-scooter has been named locally as pals organise a fundraiser to repatriate his remains back to his home in Romania. Named locally as Dragusin Vasilica, 31, who is originally from Ialomița, was on the e-scooter when the fatal collision happened on the Old Navan Road in Blanchardstown, Dublin on Sunday, August 3. No other injuries were reported. Mr Vasilica was taken to Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown but was later pronounced dead. Heartbroken pals of Mr Dragusin have now launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe to help raise funds to repatriate his remains back to his grieving family in Romania. Mr Dragusin had been living in Ireland for around four years where he worked as a plumber. In the post on the GoFundMe titled: 'Ajutor pentru repatrierea lui Dragusin Vasilica' a pal wrote that Dragusin had hoped for a better future here in Ireland. 'Friends and family describe him as a quiet and hardworking man, with a big heart and simple dreams,' organiser of the fundraiser Ilie Bitoleanu wrote. Abducted in Haiti - Gena Heraty's family issue major update

The family of an Irish woman kidnapped from an orphanage in Haiti have asked for the public to keep Gena as well as 'everyone taken with her' as the 'prayer for her speedy return'. Gena Heraty, from Westport in Mayo, was one of nine people, including a three-year-old child, kidnapped by heavily armed individuals from the Sainte-Hélène orphanage in Haiti on Sunday. Gena is the director of the orphanage in the commune of Kenscoff, 10km southeast of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, which is run by the organization "Nos Petits frères et soeurs" and houses approximately 270 children, including about 50 with disabilities. On Tuesday, Tanaiste Simon Harris held talks with his Haitian counterpart about Gena, speaking to Haiti's foreign minister, Harvel Jean-Baptiste by phone and asked that everything be done to ensure the release of Ms Heraty and the other hostages. Now Gena's family have said they are 'truly so grateful' for all of the messages of support they have received over the past days as they shared that Gena is 'loved and respected by so many people'. Irish volunteer Gena Heraty has been kidnapped Gena's family said in a statement: 'We, the family of Gena Heraty, are still coming to terms with the awful news that Gena and seven others were kidnapped from the St. Helene property in the orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti, on August 3, 2025. 'We continue to work closely with Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs (NPH) in Haiti and Ireland, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and international partners who have all assured us that everything possible is being done to get Gena, and those taken with her, safely released as soon as possible. 'Gena is loved and respected by so many people, as is evident in the outpouring of concern, support and prayers from everyone near and far. We are truly so grateful for all the messages of support we have received over the past few days. 'Given the sensitivity and evolving nature of what has happened, and mindful of the ongoing efforts to get everyone released safely, we are not in a position to share any further details at present. We echo NPH International in asking for discretion and patience throughout this difficult time. 'We continue to ask that you keep Gena, everyone taken with her, and their families in your hearts as we pray for their safe and speedy return.'
