Syrian pro-Assad fighter jailed for life in Germany for crimes against humanity

The Sun03-06-2025
BERLIN: A German court on Tuesday convicted a Syrian man of crimes against humanity and jailed him for life over offences committed during his time fighting for former President Bashar al-Assad.
The court in the city of Stuttgart found the former militiaman guilty of crimes including murder and torture after a trial which involved testimony from 30 witnesses.
Shortly after the outbreak of anti-Assad protests in early 2011, the man joined a pro-government Shia militia in the southern town of Bosra al-Sham.
He proceeded to take part in several crimes against the local Sunni population with the aim of 'terrorising' them and driving them from the town, the court found.
German authorities have pursued several suspects for crimes committed in Syria's civil war under the principle of universal jurisdiction, even after Assad's ouster last December.
In 2022, former Syrian colonel Anwar Raslan was found guilty of overseeing the murders of 27 people and the torture of 4,000 others at the notorious Al-Khatib jail in 2011 and 2012.
That was the first international trial over state-sponsored torture in Syrian prisons and was hailed as 'historic' by human rights activists.

Syria's SDF and government trade blame over Manbij attack

MANBIJ: Syria's defence ministry and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have traded blame over an attack in the northern city of Manbij, straining relations after a landmark integration agreement signed in March. The defence ministry accused the SDF of launching a rocket barrage on an army outpost in the city's countryside, injuring four troops and three civilians, according to state news agency SANA. It called the attack 'irresponsible and without justification.' In response, the U.S.-backed SDF stated it was retaliating against 'an unprovoked artillery assault targeting civilian-populated areas with more than ten shells' from factions linked to the Syrian government. The SDF did not report any casualties. The March agreement aimed to unify Syria after 14 years of war, integrating Kurdish-led forces and regional governing bodies with Damascus. However, key details, such as how the SDF would merge with Syria's armed forces, remain unresolved. The SDF insists on joining as a bloc, while Damascus prefers individual integration. A Turkish defence ministry source recently urged the SDF to demonstrate compliance with the deal, as Ankara views the group as tied to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party. 'While we reaffirm our commitment to respecting the current de-escalation arrangements, we call on the relevant authorities in the Syrian government to take responsibility and bring the undisciplined factions under their control,' the SDF said. - Reuters

German rail sabotage causes third fire in two days

BERLIN: Germany's state rail operator Deutsche Bahn has reported a third deliberate fire in two days, following two earlier incidents that disrupted train services across the country. The latest fire occurred in Hohenmoelsen, Saxony-Anhalt, where rail cables were intentionally set ablaze. Investigations confirm the fire was an act of sabotage, similar to two earlier attacks in western Germany. The affected line, primarily used for coal transport, required extensive repairs. Deutsche Bahn has already restored service between Düsseldorf and Duisburg, where the first two fires took place just one kilometre apart. The initial fire near Düsseldorf caused severe disruptions on one of Germany's busiest rail routes, forcing the cancellation of 'several hundred' trains and impacting tens of thousands of passengers. A far-left group, the 'Angry Birds Kommando,' claimed responsibility, citing opposition to environmental destruction. German rail infrastructure has frequently been targeted by radical groups, raising concerns over security and operational stability. - AFP

RCS programme introduces ward councillors to Sibu residents, says SMC chairman

Ting (back row, centre) and others pose for a group photo during the RCS programme. SIBU (Aug 3): The Residents Councillorship System (RCS) programme, which will be implemented in 14 wards, aims to introduce each Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) councillor assigned to the respective wards. SMC chairman Clarence Ting said each ward has two councillors responsible. 'For this ward (H), we have Councillor Rory Wong and Councillor Shirley Ling in charge,' he told reporters during the RCS Programme for Ward H that was held alongside the 'Waste to Wealth Programme and Anti-Rabies Vaccination Programme' at SMK Tung Hua yesterday. The programme was organised by SMC in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services Sibu, Jalan Merdeka/Meritam village security and development committee, Tung Seng Enterprise, STP Trading and Timuran Kembangan. Ting said after receiving funding, councillors in each ward will implement community-based projects in their respective areas. 'Now, I'm here because they invited me to come. Normally, I prefer not to attend because I want the local residents to get to know their ward councillors who are responsible for their area. 'So, if residents have any problems, they can go and speak to them, not me. We have 14 wards, and if I have to go to each one, I won't have time to do other things. 'That's why I encourage the councillors here to speak. Next time, if we have another event in this ward, Shirley will likely speak. We want the public to know who their ward councillors are — this is the real purpose of the RCS programme,' he explained. Meanwhile, Wong in his speech said the programme reflects the power of collaboration among the community, including the council, school, JKKK, government agencies, private sector partners, and residents. 'Together, we can create positive change. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort. Let's continue working together for a cleaner, safer, and stronger Sibu,' he said. lead Residents Councillorship System Sibu SMC
