Syrian pro-Assad fighter jailed for life in Germany for crimes against humanity
The court in the city of Stuttgart found the former militiaman guilty of crimes including murder and torture after a trial which involved testimony from 30 witnesses.
Shortly after the outbreak of anti-Assad protests in early 2011, the man joined a pro-government Shia militia in the southern town of Bosra al-Sham.
He proceeded to take part in several crimes against the local Sunni population with the aim of 'terrorising' them and driving them from the town, the court found.
German authorities have pursued several suspects for crimes committed in Syria's civil war under the principle of universal jurisdiction, even after Assad's ouster last December.
In 2022, former Syrian colonel Anwar Raslan was found guilty of overseeing the murders of 27 people and the torture of 4,000 others at the notorious Al-Khatib jail in 2011 and 2012.
That was the first international trial over state-sponsored torture in Syrian prisons and was hailed as 'historic' by human rights activists.

German rail sabotage causes third fire in two days
BERLIN: Germany's state rail operator Deutsche Bahn has reported a third deliberate fire in two days, following two earlier incidents that disrupted train services across the country. The latest fire occurred in Hohenmoelsen, Saxony-Anhalt, where rail cables were intentionally set ablaze. Investigations confirm the fire was an act of sabotage, similar to two earlier attacks in western Germany. The affected line, primarily used for coal transport, required extensive repairs. SIBU (Aug 3): The Residents Councillorship System (RCS) programme, which will be implemented in 14 wards, aims to introduce each Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) councillor assigned to the respective wards. SMC chairman Clarence Ting said each ward has two councillors responsible. 'For this ward (H), we have Councillor Rory Wong and Councillor Shirley Ling in charge,' he told reporters during the RCS Programme for Ward H that was held alongside the 'Waste to Wealth Programme and Anti-Rabies Vaccination Programme' at SMK Tung Hua yesterday. The programme was organised by SMC in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services Sibu, Jalan Merdeka/Meritam village security and development committee, Tung Seng Enterprise, STP Trading and Timuran Kembangan. Ting said after receiving funding, councillors in each ward will implement community-based projects in their respective areas. 'Now, I'm here because they invited me to come. Normally, I prefer not to attend because I want the local residents to get to know their ward councillors who are responsible for their area. 'So, if residents have any problems, they can go and speak to them, not me. We have 14 wards, and if I have to go to each one, I won't have time to do other things. 'That's why I encourage the councillors here to speak. Next time, if we have another event in this ward, Shirley will likely speak. We want the public to know who their ward councillors are — this is the real purpose of the RCS programme,' he explained.
