Who is Felipe Drugovich? Fernando Alonso replacement at F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Felipe Drugovich walked into the Hungarian Grand Prix paddock with girlfriend Carla Sirotti on Friday morning perhaps not knowing he would be called up by Aston Martin
After almost three years of waiting, this could be the weekend that Felipe Drugovich finally lives his childhood dream. He is in line to potentially make his competitive debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix in the place of the injured Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard made the journey to Budapest and completed his media day duties as normal on Thursday. But, on Friday morning, Aston Martin confirmed their veteran driver, who turned 44 earlier this week, would not take part in the first practice session of the weekend.

"In the days following the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has been managing a muscular injury in his back," a team statement read. "As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll."

It has not yet been decided whether Alonso will get back in the car at any point this weekend. As is often the case when a drivers' participation is in doubt, the team will wait for as long as possible before making any final decision.
But if Alonso's condition does not improve, then Drugovich is set to make his long-awaited bow in Formula 1 racing. It is the opportunity the Brazilian driver, 25, has been waiting for ever since winning the Formula 2 title back in 2022, only to fail to make the leap into the top category.
He signed with Aston Martin as the first member of their newly-formed driver academy in the days after his F2 success was confirmed. He immediately became a reserve driver for their F1 team and has made several practice and testing outings in that role, but has been stuck frustratingly on the sidelines in terms of racing.
Drugovich spent the entirety of 2023 on the sidelines but the following year chose to pair his reserve driver responsibilities with a switch to endurance racing. He finished 15th in his one and only season in the European Le Mans Series, having scored one podium at the Four Hours of Imola.

He also made his debut in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race that year, finishing 15th in the Hypercar class with Whelen Cadillac Racing. He again represented the team in the 2025 edition of the race, sharing a car with Brit Jack Aitken and Mercedes F1 reserve Frederik Vesti, but retired after 247 laps because of an engine issue.
Drugovich has also tested in IndyCar and the all-electric Formula E series as he keeps his single-seater racing options open. He raced in FE at the Berlin ePrix last month, called up by Mahindra Racing to fill in for the absent Nyck de Vries and finished his first race way down in 17th place after picking up a drive-through penalty. But things improved in the second event of the double-header as he climbed 12 places to finish seventh and score points.
He was born in Brazil and races under the flag of his homeland, but also holds Italian citizenship. He shares little about his personal life in public, but is regularly tagged in posts on Instagram by his girlfriend Carla Sirotti, who is in Hungary with him this weekend and could get to witness his F1 racing debut in person if Alonso fails to recover.

Max Verstappen calls Lewis Hamilton 'scared' after Hungarian GP incident

Max Verstappen says Lewis Hamilton was 'scared' after the Formula 1 rivals nearly collided during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lando Norris held off McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in the closing stages of a tense race to claim victory at the Hungaroring on Sunday. The Brit has closed the gap to his championship rival to just nine points as F1 heads on its summer break, returning at the end of August with the Dutch Grand Prix. Further back, it was a race to forget for Verstappen who took the chequered flag in ninth place, embarrassingly finishing behind Liam Lawson in Red Bull's junior team. To make matters worse for the four-time champion, he was the subject of a post-race investigation for potentially forcing Hamilton off the track on lap 30. The Red Bull attempted a bold overtake on the Ferrari down the inside of turn 4, narrowly avoiding contact, with Hamilton seemingly taking avoiding action by running wide at the corner, which in turn allowed Verstappen to get past. Hamilton would go on to finish 12th, while the incident was noted by the stewards who, somewhat unusually, decided to settle the matter after the race. Verstappen wasn't impressed to discover the stewards were investigating, telling Viaplay: 'I'm actually pretty disappointed I have to go to the stewards after the race. Just analyse it in the race. More Trending 'I just set my nose next to him [Hamilton], he gets scared and goes off track.' Hamilton for his part didn't seemed fussed about the matter on what was a terrible weekend for the seven-time champion, saying: 'I don't really remember to be honest. 'I saw last minute he was quite close to my right wheel, so I tried to avoid a collision.' More to follow… For more stories like this, check our sport page. Lando Norris kisses proud girlfriend Margarida Corceiro as F1 star celebrates tense Hungarian GP win over Piastri

The win caps a brilliant weekend for Norris, who a day earlier had arrived alongside Margarida for the first time since they rekindled their relationship. George Russell came in third after coming out on top of a fierce battle for third with Charles Leclerc, who had a meltdown at his Ferrari team for blowing pole-position. Leclerc got away well, holding his lead at the front, while a horrible start from Lando Norris saw him slip down two-places into fifth. READ MORE IN F1 MARGA MIA Norris goes public with on-off girlfriend Margarida Corceiro at Hungarian GP Mercedes' George Russell nipped up to third with Fernando Alonso close behind him in fourth. Meanwhile, it was not a good start for Lewis Hamilton as he was overtaken by Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap, leaving him in 14th and a lot of ground to make up. By lap three Norris got by Alonso's Aston Martin for fourth while Leclerc was building a lead ahead of Piastri out front. Norris was soon snapping at the heels of Russell in the battle for third, but just couldn't get past the Mercedes driver until he pitted on lap 20. Finally things got spicy when Max Verstappen went for an audacious move on his old rival Lewis Hamilton but the Ferrari driver ran wide. The pair nearly made contact but the Dutchman got ahead and snatched 11th place from the Brit. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK The stewards made note of the incident and Verstappen was under investigation. Lando Norris sprayed the gravel with two wheels before he was urged to 'keep the focus' by his race engineer Will Joseph. Piastri was over eight seconds ahead of his teammate by lap 45 with Norris closing in and setting a new fastest lap time to eat into the gap between them. The Aussie was dwindling and pitted before remerging and hunting down Leclerc until he left him for dust on lap 51. Norris was the only driver ahead of him now, rolling the dice with the one-stop strategy until the end. Leclerc was left livid at his team for letting first-place fall from their clutches and fumed on the radio: "This is so incredibly frustrating. We have lost all competitiveness, you just have to listen to me. "I would have found a different way of managing those issues. "Now it's just undriveable. It's a miracle if we finish on the podium." Piastri hunted Norris on his fresh tyres with just over three-seconds separating them with 10-laps to go. Russell was left seething as Leclerc twice moved over to the right as Russell tried to dive down the inside to overtake with the two nearly making contact. Russell was fuming on the radio demanding a penalty for the Monegasque driver and the stewards investigated. Leclerc was slapped with a five-second time penalty but didn't lose any places. Fans were licking their lips at the battle between Norris and Piastri at the front, as the two McLarens lapped 12th place Hamilton who finished where he started. After his win a jubilant Norris said: "I'm dead. I'm dead. It was tough. "We weren't really planning on the one-stop but after the first lap it was kind of our only option to get back into things. "The final stint with Oscar catching I was pushing flat out. "Rewarding even more because of that. The perfect result today. "I didn't think it would get us the win, I thought it would get us maybe into second. "I knew if I had clean air and could push I could maybe make things work and that's what we did. "It always is a bit of a gamble these kind of things. It also requires no mistakes, good laps, good strategy and that's what we had today. "We're so tightly fought it's hard to say if momentum is on anyone's side. "It's tough but fun racing against Oscar.
