The Moon Is Slowly Drifting Away From The Earth, Could We Eventually Lose It?

The moon feels like a beautiful constant for many of us, there every night, but Earth's satellite is actually slowly moving away from us, albeit very slowly.
By NASA's calculations the moon is drifting away from our planet by about 1.5 inches every year. That's not just tortoise vs. hare slow, NASA says that's about the rate at which fingernails grow.
That slow movement means our days are slowly getting longer, one study found that the length of an average day has increased by about one millisecond every century since the late 1600s.
So how did NASA scientists even clock this slow motion drift? Well it all started with the Apollo missions more than 50 years ago. That's when astronauts left reflective panels on the moon's surface. Since then scientists have been shooting laser beams at the panels and recording the amount of time it takes for the light to come back to Earth. That's how they were able to measure with such accuracy how fast the moon is retreating.
The slowly widening gap is caused by the gravitational tug-of-war between the two bodies. The moon's gravitational pull causes our oceans to bulge toward it. As NASA explains it, 'Because Earth rotates on its axis faster than the Moon orbits it, the higher gravity from Earth's bulge tries to speed up the Moon's rotation. Meanwhile, the Moon is pulling on Earth and slowing the planet's rotation. The friction that ensues from this tug-of-war forces the Moon into a wider orbit.' That wider orbit is what creates the slowly growing distance between the moon and us each year.
So could we eventually lose the moon? The short answer is no.
NASA says that about 50 billion years from now, the moon would be so far away and its orbit so large that it would tidally lock to the moon. The two bodies would stop moving away from each other. That means only one half of our world (and whomever is left on it) would ever see the moon.
However, the sun would likely intervene long before that could happen. Scientists believe that in about 5 billion years, the sun will die, becoming a giant red star that obliterates both the moon and the Earth.
Here's hoping that our future civilizations will be watching that happen from another planet we've learned to inhabit.

SpaceX said in a statement that it was now targeting a window on Tuesday for the test after saying the scrub was due to an issue with the transporter erector cradle arm position indication at Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. "Today's test auto-aborted at T-57 seconds due to an error with the transporter erector's cradle arm position indication. The arm functioned properly and teams are reviewing data. Falcon 9 and Dragon remain healthy on the pad ahead of this week's NASA Crew-11 launch to the [ISS]," SpaceX said. After the planned burn was set to begin,it was seen returning to pre-static fire. The static fire operation is when clamps are holding the rocket in place to release ahead of engine ignition as it plans on launch day. Booster serial number B1094 is being used on Crew-11's Mission on the Falcon 9. The rocket will be flying for its third time, following the events of Axiom Mission 4. Crew-11 will dock with the International Space Station, but the length of the mission is unknown until about a month after docking.

When it comes to meteor showers, the Perseids pop. It's not just about the quantity of meteors (as many as 100 per hour) and their showy quality (fireballs!) but also their superb timing. The annual shower hits its peak on warm, laid-back August nights as the Earth crosses paths with the dust cloud left by comet Swift-Tuttle on its every-133-years swing past our planet. Watching the shower can be an awesome experience as meteors streak past in the summertime heavens, leaving light and color in their wake. John Denver, 27 and on a camping trip amid the Colorado pines, was so moved after seeing the Perseids rain fire in the sky that he wrote 'Rocky Mountain High.' That said, this year there's a caveat. The meteor shower is set to peak the night of Aug. 11 and 12, according to Ed Krupp, director of L.A.'s Griffith Observatory. NASA says the best viewing time is in the predawn hours. But the moon will get in the way. 'The waning gibbous moon will severely compromise this shower at the time of maximum activity,' notes the American Meteor Society. The moon will be about 92% full and in the sky much of the time as the shower hits its peak, Krupp said. 'Fainter meteors will be lost in the moon's glow,' he told The Times. 'At its best, the Perseid shower delivers between 50 to 100 meteors per hour, but this year far fewer will be seen.' Stargazers can cross their fingers for more fireballs, a phenomenon that the Perseid shower is known for, according to NASA. 'Fireballs are larger explosions of light and color that can persist longer than an average meteor streak,' NASA says. 'This is due to the fact that fireballs originate from larger particles of cometary material.' Krupp advises that those who are 'committed to the Perseids' despite the diminished chances of visibility this year 'should go somewhere far from any urban center and away from the scattered glare of artificial lighting.' Experts advise booking campsites in Joshua Tree, the Mojave Desert and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. There are multiple other good spots. Once there, aim for an expansive view because, although the Perseids seem to radiate from the northern constellation Perseus, they can appear anywhere, Bill Cooke, a NASA meteor scientist, told The Times in 2024. 'So get on a cot or on a sleeping bag,' he said, 'and lie flat on your back and look straight up.' Good news for 2026: The forecast for the Perseid meteor shower is excellent. The moon will be dark, and as NPR reports, an unusually large number of meteors are expected to flash through the night sky.
